I did not see that coming!

I am really missing my nana today and she died from secondary cancer having previously survived breast cancer for 5 years.

It really is.

One of my friends had it in her 20's.

I watched this with mixed feelings as I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May - so far it seems to be handled well Sally -although I loathe her character, was very good -there has been a lot of concern on the breast cancer care forums about portraying a realistic view of bc - ie that it's not done and dusted within '3 months' as Molly said about Pam's friend..unfortunately it doesn't work like that..sometimes active treatment can be over within months but most bc patients remain under the cloud and often on hormone blocking drugs for 5 years. Sorry to preach, but it feels important to make things clear.

wintera · 26/12/2009 14:41

My Mother in law had breast cancer last year and it certainly wasn't 'done and dusted' in 3 months! I suppose it depends on the treatment and whether it has spread to the lymph nodes etc. . My MIL had to have the breast lump removed, and the lymph nodes under her arm removed too, then chemo first, then radiation, and she had quite bad side effects with both treatments.

MaryAnnSingleton - I hope everything is going well for you and your treatment hasn't been too bad!

GypsyMoth · 26/12/2009 14:46

i found a lump when i was 21....it was done and dusted within 3 months,BUT the worry it will return etc stays there forever...

wintera · 26/12/2009 15:49

That's the thing isn't it? Everyone is different and has different treatment so it depends on what the writers decide to do with the storyline. I just hope it is handled well, and from what I saw, it will be.

FabHasHadALovelyXmas · 26/12/2009 16:53

I am sure the 3 months bit was to make the point that Molly wasn't taking this seriously as she wanted to be with Kevin.

VirginPeachyMotherOfSpod · 26/12/2009 17:42

I know the cancer charity I once worked for (admin, am no saint) often acts as advisor on this sort of programme, so the writers certainly have acess to the facts, althougyh of course whether they choose to use them.....

Both people I have known who have died from BC were similar ages to Sally, one a colleague and the other my frien's mother (who also had other complicating factors that limited her treatment options). If done well, it will be I hope useful, as fear is stillcited as a reasonm not to see a GP when early advice is so important.

MaryAnnSingleton · 26/12/2009 17:44

thank you wintera - my active treatment is finished, it was tolerable and I was lucky to have mine caught before it had spread - I think you just get on with it - people who have chemo can have treatment for months and months, followed by usually radiotherapy, unless they have chemo before surgery to reduce the tumour size - the thing is that there is no definitive 'all clear' for anyone.

kittya · 26/12/2009 21:47

Ive never seen cancer on a soap before. It will be interesting to see how it is handled, although corrie writers are pretty superior I think.

luckylou · 27/12/2009 10:19

I knew it was coming because I'd seen threads on breast cancer forums, but I found myself in tears when Sally said 'I've got breast cancer'. I was diagnosed with breast cancer six years ago, at Christmas.

I know Coronation Street consulted Breast Cancer Care on this storyline; I'm glad they did and hope they take note of what they were told as the story progresses.

A number of soaps have had cancer storylines, most often breast cancer stories. Eastenders and Holby City share the prize, I think, for least accurate representation.

Peggy in Eastenders had breast cancer; it was before my diagnosis so like most people who have no experience of it I knew very little about beast cancer. But I remember being moved by the scene where she wept as she faced a mirror and moved her blouse aside to look at her mastectomy site.

But after that the only issue was her insecuruty about her sexual attractiveness following mastectomy. She had no further treatment, and there has never been a storyline with her worrying about recurrence or metastasis; as someone has said, there's no 'all clear' with breast cancer, and it can return at any time, even years after diagnosis and treatment.

Most ridiculously of all, there was no reconstruction story - and breast reconstruction is major surgery, much more so than mastectomy and with a longer recovery time - but Peggy was soon flashing her famous cleavage - check, two breasts, present and correct - behind the bar at the Vic.

I hope Corrie has taken better advice. Sally is young for breast cancer (early 40s), and breast cancer in younger women tends to be more aggressive.

kittya · 27/12/2009 19:51

Im sure Corrie will handle it well and I think Sally is the ideal person to deal with it.

pissovski · 28/12/2009 00:16

Remember Brookside tackling a cancer storyline very sensitively - hope Corrie does the same

littlepollyflinders · 29/12/2009 11:41

I think the ever fabulous Corrie scriptwriters are handling it very well.
The poignancy of juxtaposing (sorry don't mean to sound like a thesis...) Sally's breast cancer with Rosie's glamour modeling and wanting breast enhancement is, IMHO, a stroke of genius.

kittya · 29/12/2009 23:28

They are very clever. Almost changing the subject, I heard that Molly is going to be pregnant. I hope not, she was really starting to get on my nerves. I thought Bill was excellent last night.

satc2bringiton · 01/01/2010 12:24

Great NYE episode.

Really felt for Sally when she was singing.

Still wondering what they are going to do about Blanche

kittya · 01/01/2010 22:52

I think they will bring in that lad, I cant remember his name, who works with Ashley. They will give him a big story as he is really funny. So, is Becky defo pregnant?

FoJo · 02/01/2010 07:03

I think poor blanche will die quietly on holiday. I also reckon Beccky is pregnant
