I don't know why I'm so suprised about care homes being so crap, both my grandma's were in them for years. But someone needs to take a serious look at the industry, apparently they are 30 years behind the nhs and schools for standards and monitoring .

I can't see this having a happy ending.

I'm watching.
I've provided NHS service to dementia care homes.
He's absolutely right that they can be good.
I've seen good and bad ones.
It doesn't help that most of the staff/managers are stupid.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 15/12/2009 21:46

I forgot that this was on - will have to watch it on demand tomorrow now.

Nevergoogle · 15/12/2009 21:47

this is the second part Iwish.

Meglet · 15/12/2009 21:48

I have to say they don't seem very qualified.

Have you namechanged? Were people being traumatised after googling you ?

this stimulated me to look up the care homes my granny had been in

the lies in the insepction reports have made me and and these are supposed to be great homes

Nevergoogle · 15/12/2009 21:50

Yes, have namechanged for a while. It's still me.

MarjoryMoores · 15/12/2009 21:52

I love Gerry Robinson - he has such a gentle approach with teh residents. Its the management that is so shocking.

Nevergoogle · 15/12/2009 22:02

I think Gerry Robinson's father had dementia. He seems to have a good understanding.

bibbitybobbitysantahat · 15/12/2009 22:04

I'm a big fan of Gerry Robinson too - have loved all his other series. Don't think I can bear to watch this programme though .

those reports are full of lies - I worked in a home rated excellent in all areas but they were full of bull shit (the reports) - just watched that programme and became very angry.

I worked in a "good" home - and there were things that made me angry - and that's why I don't think I could ever work in care homes again. When you're a "junior" care assistant your power to change/do anything is nil.

NotanOtter · 15/12/2009 22:35

always looking for answers

i am glad you agree - i felt quite wild when i read some of the things the reports said
things i KNEW to be blatant lies

why would the independent inspectors do this?

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 15/12/2009 22:38

because unless there's been a report about a home, or they've previously done very badly homes have a good idea when an inspection will be done - so can "look" good (bit like Ofsted really).

Unless they see it with their own eyes/hear it with their own ears from enough staff they simply report what they see.

NotanOtter · 15/12/2009 22:49

depressing

Awassailinglookingforanswers · 15/12/2009 22:55

according to their last "excellent" report (that I can find online - it was done while I was working there so a couple of years now) residents choose when they get up.

Yet we night staff were expected to have a minimum number of people up and dressed before the morning staff came on. Our work was very much judged on the "numbers" that were up not how well we cared for them.

I hated it - I would have to rush through getting them up, doing all the washing for them, when there were some that were still capable of doing at least some of their personal washing themselves (with me next to them still - but at least them holding the flannel/sponge). There was never any time to let them do some things indepentantly......well there would have been I guess if we had more staff. I didn't want to lose my job so I did what was expected - made up the numbers

DutchOma · 16/12/2009 20:56

I thought it was such a strange ending:- Everything seemed to improve in that home, then there was a discovery of sexual abuse (between whom? residents? residents and staff?) and the home was closed almost as soon as the previous manager and her boss came back from holiday.
Dementia is such a horrible disease.

Nevergoogle · 16/12/2009 21:08

I missed the end. Is that what happened?

NotanOtter · 16/12/2009 21:38

the home was closed down and all the poor residents shipped here and there....

DutchOma · 16/12/2009 21:44

It was truly awful. And so totally unexpected. I just couldn't understand it.

NotanOtter · 16/12/2009 21:47

those poor people
