of course it's less bad than mugging an old lady. Out of interest how much do you think someone could syphon off your bank account before you really started to notice? I'm soooo bad at even opening bank statements let alone reading them I reckon it would take me a while. and me and dh have joint accounts so I could just attribute it to him. Someone could probably get a few hundred out of me, if they did it slowly

Blu · 08/06/2005 23:37

I think that mugging an old lady is worse because it involves physical intimidation of someone who is vulnerable - none of which applies to the GS man. he won't have sat awake at night shivering in terror following the crime.
But Jyoti didn't have the mitigating factors that SOME muggers might be able to claim, and she pre-meditated theft as a stream of consciousness - AND she cold-boodedly tried to blackmail him once she was discovered, which is v ' immoral'.

ScummyMummy · 08/06/2005 23:38

No- I agree with you, bk. Didn't see the programme but robbing from the rich without hurting or frightening them seems better to me than robbing and terrifying poor old women. Not that I would particularly condone the former, you understand...

soapbox · 08/06/2005 23:38

BK - that is a hard one!

That question goes right to the core of your moral and ethical being.

To me on a technical basis theft is theft. However, I get involved in a lot of corporate fraud cases at work and TBH sometimes those perpetrating the frauds seem more like the victims that the companies do! But don't ever quote me on that in RL

I think what she did was definately wrong- and she knew that it was. The bahaviour was classic though - she got away with small amounts then gradually increased it and increased it. Reminds me of the boundaries thing with children. If you let them away with something once then the next time they try to push their luck even further!

I was surprised though that GS pursued it, they are quite a secretive organisation and I would have thought that they would have wanted to keep things quiet.

But maybe thats coloured by my experience where the vast majority of frauds never see the light of day!

but banshee, that's what makes it a sensational crime - the amount of money. but what i am trying - obviously unsuccessfully - to say is that it is not the amount of money involved which determines the seriousness of the crime but the impact to the victim. impact to gs and their employees, small - impact to old lady, potentially fatal.

ScummyMummy · 08/06/2005 23:40

night bluster

Blu · 08/06/2005 23:42

Oh - it's Indian - I quite like it, particularly when pronounced more like 'djotti'

Blu · 08/06/2005 23:43

night, scumster

ScummyMummy · 08/06/2005 23:43

Just realised that says "bluster" as in stutter angrily or wind blowing in fierce bursts when I meant to add an affectionate "ster" to blu's name. Apologies.

Blu · 08/06/2005 23:44

It made me laugh

ScummyMummy · 08/06/2005 23:44
