I only know because I happened to be asked to audit his back catalogue shortly after, had never really heard of his work before that - shame he never got great fame, his partner I think was hoping that interest would be heightened by the proms coverage.

SuperBunny · 12/09/2009 22:04

I have been commenting on the frocks

choosyfloosy · 12/09/2009 22:05

seem to have lost a post

The 2001 proms - just shows - all i remember is the Barber Adagio, it was so utterly amazing that the rest was blasted out of my head!

Didn't like the Gershwin one bit - too much technique, not much warmth.

Tippett's music is beautifully intricate, which makes it very interesting to analyse. Such a shame he's not better known but I think he made it onto the A-level syllabus though.

gruber · 12/09/2009 22:09

Some of the orchestra are (whisper it!) not wearing frocks at all... but naff black trousers and tops. What's their logic??

choosyfloosy · 12/09/2009 22:09

OH HANDEL

20 mins georg friedrich a day keeps the doctor away

Ahem...

frakkinpannikin · 12/09/2009 22:17

I was just looking at theat Radio3!

I can't choose a single piece that sends shivers down my spine! I can think of several but it's all for different reasons.

The one that would totally get me but isn't at all 'classical' is the theme tune from The Piano.

Back to the Proms...have to say I'm not a Handel fan. I think Fireworks is overdone

choosyfloosy · 12/09/2009 22:17

yes i've already emailed you [grade 2 viola emoticon]

frakkinpannikin I did Tippett's Child of Our Time for A Level, but that was 20 years ago now and they've probably changed the syllabus significantly since then.

It's been a good variety this evening. Loved the Haydn - I've had the CD on my wish list since it came out last year and still no one's bought it for me [sob]

choosyfloosy · 12/09/2009 22:19

interesting frakkinpannikin, i sent R3 a question about film soundtracks too. I hate all the ones they play on Classic FM but nonetheless i wonder where they fit in music as a whole.

and i sent a long list of spine shiverers, why not!

Oh golly I've just spotted someone I was at university with singing!

I'm sure I did Concerto for double strings for my A-level. But that may have been first year uni. [memory failing emoticon]

choosyfloosy · 12/09/2009 22:26

Wow, SC must be great at the opera house - every word as clear as a bell.
