Nursery University

Watching this now on More4, OK I am half asleep but I don't understand any of it ... is it not just about very early years childcare, don't they have nanny sharing and childminders and so on in New York?

Also ex rate USD:GBP never comes across that well in this kind of transatlantic show, apparently one of these nurseries costs USD 15,000 p.a. = £9k which is less than quite a lot of UK nursery fees TBH, it wouldn't signify top dollar here anyway.

So basically I'm like, what's the point or the fuss that the programme is based on?

Should I just go to bed now?

I think it's abotu pre-school education, ie how impossible it is to get your 2.5 yo into playgroup or nursery school.

And how much it costs - when in the UK it's free after 3yo anyway.

I thought it was $15k a term actaully!

pastures new 15k per semester - isn't that termly?

They seem to have nannies also, but want to do pre-school to prepare for school? Doesn't seem to be a childcare option?
The thinking is (I think) good pre-school = good school= good university.

Gonna be much worse when the kids are going to school isn't it!

Nightmare for them. I just called up my nursery, sent a cheque, job done.

Wow. what a palaver that was. I think the "admissions consultants" certainly helped whip up the hysteria, leading to everyone applying for every pre school. Madness. Imagine paying $4000 to someone to help you APPLY for a preschool!

I've thought of a great new career - open a private pre-school in New York.

Or yes, be an adviser - I mean really, who pays to be told to turn up on time for an appointment???

i wondered why someone didn't open another school or maybe just expand the existing one a little. dp said it then wouldn't be so exclusive. suppose that's true.

I thought it was a fab programme, but, it felt extremely contrived particularly regarding the boy (Kieron?) from the less well-off family. You just knew the mum would get through by phone to the most sought-after nursery in NYC, you knew he would get offered a place and then knew he would get financial assistance...

.. makes great TV though.

I'm glad the twins got in the ideal school for the boy too... the blonde mum was a bit desperate - how the one they picked didn't hate them on the first day, I don't know - it was made clear they felt it was second best!

Ah OK thanks for explanations. I watched about 3/4 of it then did give up and go to bed! I think we should all go to New York and open another nursery, being British-run would quickly make it the most desirable, dontcha think?
