I've stopped crying now, and I have a question. I missed the start, but it seems that Rachel's sister was in the home with her. Is she still in touch with her sister? She didn't appear at the reunion.

i saw the beginning, missed the middle, so not much use.
blubbed a bit.

I don't know. I hadn't thought of that. It was very good wasn't it.

newgirl · 14/05/2009 22:25

i just started a thread on this cos i didnt see yours! sorry about that!

i thought the program was fantastic - balanced, interesting, and moving

i saw it all way through and rachel's sister jenny was not mentioned other than at the start - they were both raised by foster parents/adopted in scotland - i dont know why she wasnt mentioned in the show

MrsMuddle · 14/05/2009 22:34

That's OK, newgirl. I was just about to ask my question on your thread, so I'm glad you found mine!

It was very moving, and I thought it was very interesting that a lot of them thought of their time in the home as a positive experience, when the thinking these days seems to be that children's homes = bad.

Tina and her husband were fantasic. It's made me want to retrain and do some kind of work with older children.

i thought it was lovely to see one of the men's face really light up when he was talking to the 'dad' from the home - there was such warmth and humour there

it makes me want to adopt though - watch this space

BitOfFun · 15/05/2009 01:24

Wasn't it heartbreaking about Brian, who was a bully, but knew he was put into care at 10 days and still didn't get adopted? He must have been one troubled kid- it made me cry

newgirl · 15/05/2009 13:05

yes he was a very interesting man - he was horrified to think he had been tough to other kids. He was obviously very proud of his own sons.

candyfluff · 15/05/2009 13:48

made me cry to
nice to hear postive stories of being in care
makes you feel so gald for the privilaged life we have

TheCrackFox · 15/05/2009 13:55

I sobbed through most of this programme.

Tina and Dennis were lovely, the world needs more people like this.

BitofFun 5t really upset me about Brian. I just assume that a baby would be guaranteed an adopted family. He turned out to be a great dad.

Although I don't think she should have told Brian that the others remembered him as a bully.. I mean what did that serve the poor bloke? And no wonder he didn't turn up reunion. Great programme.

M1SSUNDERSTOOD · 15/05/2009 21:50

The bit that was very telling was how few of the children had turned out "normal" emotionally with brian and the brother of rachel (stefan) saying they found it hard to maintain relationships. Rachel alluded to the fact she couldn't understand how her parents could leave their children and brian claimed he wasn't interested in finding out about his past. The process of uncovering what really happened to rachel and jennifer was obv painful and was coveredin a social work magazine (I work in social work) and had been undertaken by a social work "detective". It was through her that rachel was able to make the programme as a lot of files are inaccessible by general public.
