it made me cry - the end with the family

Lal23 - in all honesty, I never really thought of the Hilltown as being a bad area, if someone had asked me to list the poorer areas of the city, I guess everyone immediately thinks of Whitfield, although it has been regenerated over the years and there are a lot of private residential developments that way now.

FelineFine · 11/05/2009 13:54

Oh I am glad I did not see it.

I have read anough to annoy me.

The thing about the Polish family is that yes, they are 'Local' and yes, he is working in Dundee. But for how long? Enjoy the 13K and then go home?

hifi · 11/05/2009 16:56

i thought the polish family were totally clueless. why would you relocate to a deprived area without doing your research? they then go and knock out 3 kids.

silkcushion · 11/05/2009 22:59

well I watched it and cried

BitOfFun · 11/05/2009 23:24

Just how "set up" is this? It always puzzles me how they just walk into voluntary work without the usual police checks etc...do you think there is a lot more planning behind the scenes than they let on?

Kewcumber · 12/05/2009 09:43

it made me cry (as always) but I did think her decision on who got what were bizarre.

I don;t really care that the family she gave to were Polish but £13,000 seemed totally out of proportion to what the charities got. And assuming they spend even half of it on renting somewhere larger (it looked more like a 3 bed flat to me that they ended up with which seemed more sensible to me) - what happens when they've spent the money? Back to poverty in a one-bed flat? Very odd

I thought £7,500 a peculiarly small amount for each charity and really not life changing at all. The play group woman couldn't even point at one specific thing they would be able to do differently.

Odd.

Kewcumber · 12/05/2009 09:45

the recovering addict touched me too - why isn;t someone tackling his landlord to sort out the flat - surely it didn't belong to him?!

HolyGuacamole · 12/05/2009 21:46

I'd think it'd be too dangerous to give a recovering drug addict a sum of money, especially if the drug has been Heroin (he kind of had that look). "Recovering" probably means methadone dependant and TBH it is just another drug to be addicted to and many methadone users will supplement with either Heroin or street bought prescription pills. But yes she maybe could have organised for his electricity and gas to be switched back on and a bit of furniture.

I thought she was a bit tight, did she not say her companies were making in excess of £52 million a year? It didn't bother me that she gave money to the Polish couple though, at least the man wanted to work and provide for his family.....unlike some drug addicts who drain society, do not work or do not want to work.

The way they do it is that Channel 4 'approaches' a charity or whatever and says 'we're doing a series of documentaries on homelessness as seen through the eyes of a volunteer, a paid worker and a homeless person (or whatver theme it is that week), could we use your project to highlight the volunteers issues please? We'll send in someone to show the volunteers viewpoint' That way there is less suspicion I would imagine..

posieparker · 16/05/2009 18:13

She was very tight, just did it for publicity. I have watched all of them and some have been truly moved and generous...the millionaires that is.

coolma · 16/05/2009 18:41

and yes she was pretty awful - the money she gave was uterly pathetic considering her lifestyle and I have serious problems with her ignoring the young lad and giving the money to the family ...
