Speeding advert. Too much?

Im really having trouble with the latest speeding advert. The dead child is so upsetting. I know thats the whole point, but my DS saw the advert the other day and it really freaked him out. The dead child was wearing the same colour sweatshirt as his school. He thinks someone from his school died. I KNOW that the whole point of the advert is to get a reaction like this, but I think it should be after the watershed. Anyone else?

I have seen it twice and both times it was after the watershed. However, i do think that its not just drivers who need to be aware of dangers on the road. I think children need to be told that they may get run over!!

MrsMcCluskey · 21/02/2009 21:11

It is upsetting, but i think it gets the message across.
My Ds's saw it on Sky1 at about tea time.
They didnt really get it, but I explained it to them and if it makes them think twice before crossing then I dont have a problem with it.

wheresclaire · 21/02/2009 21:12

I did use the "thats what happens if you run out into the road" line. Theres a cartoon one on CITV about a boy who ran out in the road. Much more suitable for kids!

It HONESTLY scared the shit out of me. I had tears in my eyes.

Its fecking horrid.

When hes under the desk ...

But then its supposed to be isn't it?

misdee · 21/02/2009 21:15

i dont like it but its meant to be hard hitting and makes you think. i havent ever seen it before 8pm (my kids are in bed them).

BitOfFun · 21/02/2009 21:16

Honestly, you can't scratch yer arse these days it seems without seeing maiming, medical emergencies or dire warnings of how your kids are doomed to obesity-ridden cancer...I am bloody sick of it! I put the telly on for a break, for feck's sake. So no, YANBU!!

Disenchanted3 · 21/02/2009 21:17

I was scared when the adverts came on the next time in case it was on again but I am a complete wuss!

BitOfFun · 21/02/2009 21:18

Not that you asked if you were being unreasonable, but force of habit and all that

CuriousSquid · 21/02/2009 21:18

i remember one from Tarrant on TV years ago from Australia i think. About drink driving and the car flipped up OVER a hedge and the girl was playing in the garden ........etc

frasersmummy · 21/02/2009 21:37

I found last years worse.. its 30 for a reason

you know the one where the child comes back to life after being knocked down

if you have ever lost a child you will get what I mean when I say showing a child coming back to life was very upsettting.

I think this years is better

MmeLindt · 21/02/2009 21:41

I saw this ad the other night and it took me a minute to realise that the child was supposed to be dead.

I found it upsetting and would be livid if my DC were to see it.

Does anyone know if these kind of ads actually work? The people I see speeding are not the type to sit and think about an ad like that.

nnibnabs · 21/02/2009 23:50

Something weird just happened - as I clicked on thread to read this advert came on.
Anyway, in answer to MmeLindts post - yes they do work.
I got flashed on a mobile camera last year doing 36 in a 30 zone (it was on a dual carriageway merging into a residential area, but no excuse) Instead of points I got offered a place on a speed awareness course and had to pay £75. The majority of people on the course were 30 - 45, with a few older people, but only a couple of 'boy racers'. We were shown the 30 for a reason video, and the one from a few years ago with the boy in the middle of the busy road and were told they were based on real accidents that had happened. It was a massive slap in the face to me, all I could think of was my DS at home waiting for me, and to this day I won't go over the limit. The advert is harsh, but its reinforced the reality of speeding in my mind.

unknownrebelbang · 22/02/2009 00:01

I wasn't aware that there was a particular "type" of speeder.

Yes, I can see that a course like that would work very well. I don't know if the ad on it's own has the same impact.

I know there is no "type" of speeder. I am just thinking of the neighbour we had in Germany and my Mum's neighbour in Scotland. Both mid-twenties with souped up cars that they raced into the cul de sac where children were always out playing. We spoke to our neighbour in Germany on many occasions, sometimes in calm rational voices, sometimes our DHs got really irate and gave them a good bollocking. It never made any difference. Even after he almost ran a toddler over, he did not change his habits.

I don't think that even the most brutal of adverts would make him stop and think.

southeastastra · 22/02/2009 14:50

omg i remember seeing that one squid, still stays with me for what it's worth, the ads do make me slow down

Tillyboo · 28/02/2009 08:23

I think it's brilliant. Hard hitting, honest and true. I agree there isn't one particular type of person who speeds. We are all capable and probably all have exceeded a limit at some point.

What I found the most disturbing and sticks in my mind the most - even when I am driving - is the little boys eyes. Have you noticed that one is darker. The shoeless feet and position he died in.

It gives me the shivers whenever I see it but I DO think it will have the desired effect - not to everyone I'm sure as you'll always get the idiots who take no notice of anything.

Because the man in the film is an ordinary family man going about ordinary life it tells us that's it's not just the boy racers, the men with the fast cars or the novice drivers that are the culprits.
It could be you, me, your grandad or Auntie Gladys ....

What is incredibly spooky is that the little boy looks just like my nephew and the little girl who came back to life in the previous advert looked just like my neice.
