Just wondering how they are going to make us feel guilty now given that a large proportion of the nation are living on this now

yawwwn surprise , surprise the cheaper food doesn't taste as good

Surely if people are shopping for budget food it's through necessity not choice ??

THe other family have same budget but have to go to local shops etc though... Suprised she got all that meat for £15 though!

Nagapie · 22/01/2009 20:31

Perhaps I am missing something, but which family would go out and make their entire shop consist of cheap ranges ??

Somehow - perhaps the family are cutting costs by buying less meat and buying cheapo brands to cut corners??

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 22/01/2009 20:32

Lots of families have an entire shop of cheap value ranges, myself included

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 22/01/2009 20:32

Actually, scrub that face - why should I be ??

Nagapie · 22/01/2009 20:33

Apologies !

Sidge · 22/01/2009 20:42

Now I have seen what goes into cheapo meat products I will certainly think twice before buying them. I'd rather cut down in other areas than meat I think.

EldonAve · 22/01/2009 20:44

I love the kids from the family buying the value ranges - they say everything tastes lovely, bless

Dropdeadfred · 22/01/2009 20:46

less protein and B12 in cheaper ranges

IAmTheNewQueenOfMN · 22/01/2009 20:46

I have to buy all the hceap ranges too
surprised anyone waould say that nagapie

Dropdeadfred · 22/01/2009 20:50

is it imposible to buy food from scratch cheaply? like the other family?

Lilyloo · 22/01/2009 20:51

Buying cheap value productss isn't really a choice is it ??

Eldon i love them kids too how nice must it be to cook for them ?

Biggest way to economise on meat is to eat far less. A "medium" chicken (not a value one!) will do our family 3 main meals - 2 adults 4 children, you just get used to eating less meat rather than eating loads of yummy roast chicken IYSWIM.

Lilyloo · 22/01/2009 20:55

I also do more daily shops esp Monday morning to get nice meat on reduction.

Have to say am glad he ended it laying the responsibility at the supermarket door.

I feel quite ill at the thought of 40% meat sausages - emoticon

Sidge · 22/01/2009 21:02

I agree CarGirl, I would rather eat less meat of better quality but unfortunately DH is a carnivore with a huge appetite. He's away at the moment and me and my 3DDs can share a chicken breast between us! Whereas he'd be happy having a whole chicken to himself

CarGirl · 22/01/2009 21:13

I am too, I love meat so does DH and dd2 but I dish it up sparingly and they've got used to it. I also have been led to belived that eating too much meat is not really that good for us.

More veg anyone???????

Sidge · 22/01/2009 21:22

Reminds me of the episode of Friends where Joey gets the meat sweats!

That's my DH...

Dropdeadfred · 23/01/2009 10:50

alot of that cheap food looked disgusting when you saw how it was made!
i'd rather have a jacket potato with beans than a cheap pie/sausage/pastie...yuk!

anyway wasn't £135 for 2 adults and 2 children per week quite alot..£95 was stil alot

likessleep · 23/01/2009 12:23

i totally agree.
i put lentils / beans in things, say a shepherds pie, so a pack of mince does us 2 shepherds pies (1 in freezer), rather than 1.
i also agree that we eat too much meat.
yesterday, i bought a £2 pack of minced pork and made 10 sausages out of them. they are so meaty and easy to make. i reckon they'll do us 4 meals.
i also didn't agree with programme that it is up to the supermarkets to take the hit on their profit. they are a business and we choose to shop there. if people didn't buy there, they would go out of business. they aren't a charity and not government run or anything.
he was rubbish at asking questions, he was so leading, it really p&&!!'d me off. rant over, sorry!

Notalone · 23/01/2009 12:25

I actually thought the programme was unfairly balanced. Yes, the Value ranges have less protein etc but the "Extra Special Best etc" ranges have more fat so are not necessarily better for you. I am sure there was a programme on a while ago that measured fat levels and the better ranges were ridiculously high in fat and calories.

Dropdeadfred · 23/01/2009 12:29

Was any else astounded about the cut from £135 to £95 per week?

I'm sure there are families on her that survive on a hell of a lot less than that!!

snuffyp · 23/01/2009 12:39

I agree with Notalone even the special ranges were still quite crap and not always abig difference between them with meat content etc.I think if people can they should try not buy all the value range(i know easier said than done)and just try think of cheap meals.Like Likessleep does i bulk up meals with spag bol i add mushrooms, grated carrot, sweetcorn etc with sausage casserole i put in veg and lentils,i bulk up lasagne too with veg tho not huge amounts as i want to taste the meat!plus its a great way to get more veg and sneak it past my dd.I think the programme in away is gonna make people feel bad they cannot buy more expensive food the fault lies with the supermarkets being greedy with there profit. Is it just me they say supermarkets are slashing prices but last year you really noticed meat etc shot up but i cannot see that its come down and you end up wih a tiny chicken!!

pollycazalet · 23/01/2009 12:39

I thought the budget was really high considering they were supposedly being budget food - and wasn't clear to me if that was £90 for food only or all hosuehold stuff?

I was shocked about the budget tomatoes being less nutritious than the more expensive brands (i don't eat meat and expected budget meat products to be pretty grim - no surprises there)

TheOtherMaryPoppinsDiets · 23/01/2009 18:34

The £90 was for food only. I spend less than half of that a week
