Lark Rise Question

Does anyone know who played the atheist would-be-doctor brother last night? I recognised him but can't place him and now it's really annoying me!
Oh, and I think the 'flirtatious' relationship between Dorcas and Mr JD is really not working. It just doesn't ring true, either that, or he's just a terrible actor, which is quit possible.

The actor's name is Oliver Dimsdale. Don't know what else he's been in. Looked familiar to me too but I didn't recognise the name when I looked at the cast list in the Radio Times.

Tigerschick · 19/01/2009 16:03

Oliver Dimsdale

Didn't watch it - it clashed with European Rugby Special - but if that's who it was then maybe you'll recognise something from his biog.

Zebs, I'm not particularly enjoying this new series tbh.

twoluvlykids · 19/01/2009 16:07

it's tripe, and not at all true to the book

I do like Twister, though

Mercy · 19/01/2009 16:10

I did wonder about that - would you recommend the book?

BalloonSlayer · 19/01/2009 17:58

The book is basically a nostalgic look back at the old days. I think there were three books, the first is Lark Rise, then there was Over to Candleford, I forget the other. Now they tend to be published in one volume.

Virtually none of the TV series is in the books. I dug my copy out to look at last series . . . The Squire was an old man, Dorcas Lane is also rather old (although I suppose in those days 40 was old) - she certainly is not a love interest.

There was an episode last series about a drunken husband. It was sort of in the book - one paragraph.

It's an enjoyable rose-tinted read though.

Like the others have said, this new series seems awful.

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 19/01/2009 18:37

I agree, it's just sort of not much of anything. One article described it as being so laid back it made Cranford look like The Wire.

I really enjoyed the last series but have been throughly unimpressed by this one so far. Don't know whether I've just had enough or if it's generally more sh*t than the previous series?

RustyBear · 19/01/2009 18:44

The final book in the trilogy was called Candleford Green. I didn't want to watch the Tv series because I love the book so much & I thought it wouldn't be the same - seems I was right.

goingonfortynoelectricshocks · 19/01/2009 18:44

We thought he looked like the guy from 'The Man from Uncle' with Doodah Glennisters voice.

TheGreatScootini · 19/01/2009 18:45

I quite like it but then anything on on a Sunday that requires me not to think is fine by me.(I used to have quite a fondness for songs of praise for this very reason.Jesus Christ.I am only 29-I hate myself sometimes)
But can anyone tell me what happened to the game keeper person that Laura was seeing last series?Did he turn out to be a a bit of a tit?Did he die?Where did he go?

goingonfortynoelectricshocks · 19/01/2009 18:48

She fell out with him when she discovered he was a toff / right wing. Her dad hated him too for the same reason (God he's a bore!).

I love it becasue it is sooooooo Sunday Eve!

goingonfortynoelectricshocks · 19/01/2009 18:52

Did anyone else wonder how George was going to build a road in a week before he went to Brazil? They never made it past the bridge? and even then it was sooooo shoddy a weak pissed woman could pull it up .

TheGreatScootini · 19/01/2009 19:01

The road building was a tad absurd. How were three men ever going to build what I assume to be a fairly long road when at least one of said men (boring moral Dad) has an allegedly full time position as a master stone mason?

I quite envied her that Sherry though.I am in detox

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 19/01/2009 19:48

Her plastered on the sherry was the best bit. I was pi**ing myself laughing. And I'm glad I wasn't paying for their road building work. My 3 year old could've done a better job, and he'd only need paying in Jaffa cakes.

And thanks for the name of the guy. None the wiser, so I stuck it into IMDB, he was in that shite lawyers thing on ITV. And that's about all I can remember about it. It was about lawyers. It was shite. Oh, and it had the mad bloke from Eastenders in it.

The books are a beautiful evocation of country life at the close of the 19th century. Nothing much actually happened but they are so gentle and amusing and idyllic.

The tv series is nothing like the books but is gentle chicken soup TV for a Sunday evening and is my one vice

ZebsRoomofHerOwn · 19/01/2009 19:59

Well it's certainly better viewing than Vets in Africa on ITV. I've got the book, I just haven't read it yet. Sounds like I should.
