What can you tell me about Merlin? How do they get round the obvious mistakes?

eg Merlin being a contemporary af Arthur despite being instrumental in Arthur birth ?

& he doesn't appear to be welsh - & I thought that was definite

& when is it on

WideWebWitch · 21/09/2008 08:52

Ok, looked it up, he's 22

WideWebWitch · 21/09/2008 08:52

I AM old enough to be his mother.

LittleBella · 21/09/2008 08:53

LOL

oh dear

I bet Arfur's the 24 year old. He just doesn't look as twelvish as Merlin.

What's happened to Robin Hood btw? Have they dumped it since they got rid of Marian or will it ever be resuscitated?

seeker · 21/09/2008 08:54

Does the expression "willing suspension of disbelief" mean nothing to you people?

I think it's fab - although I do think that the factt hat I would myself rather drawn to the Richard WIlson character a bit worrying!

Strictly Come Dancing and Merlin and home made pizza. A perfect Saturday evening chez seeker.

DrHorrible · 21/09/2008 08:58

There is willing to suspend and there is "Call me Gwen". You cannot call Guinevere "Gwen".

Yup, merlin is the 22yr old. But how does he look 12??? There are only 5 years between me and him

WideWebWitch · 21/09/2008 08:59

Yes I rather liked Guy of Gisburne myself

JackieNo · 21/09/2008 09:02

OH yes, definitely. Guy of Gisburne is in a different league to (from?) this lot (though apparently gay).

seeker · 21/09/2008 09:19

Bet Guinivere called herself "Gwen"!

DrHorrible · 21/09/2008 09:24

Tis like when people assume that DH is called "Andy". He has never been an Andy. He doesn't look the slightest bit like one. He introduces himself to people as Andrew and yet they still shorten it

LittleBella · 21/09/2008 09:59

pmsl. At least I don't fancy Gaius. Things are looking up.

SorenLorensen · 21/09/2008 14:51

There was something about Merlin, I agree Though he has an incongrously thick neck which put me off somewhat.

It was clearly checked for historical accuracy by the same people who did Robin Hood.

Anthony Head has porked up a bit since Buffy. And what was all that "there will be no magic in my kingdom" nonsense - he was clearly using some kind of PA system when addressing the crowds at the beginning - his voice was all loud and echoey

SorenLorensen · 21/09/2008 14:53

Oh and when Gwen was all 'old hag-ified' at the end and squashed under the chandelier - and she looked up at them all, with her last dying breath - her face was old, and her hands were old, but she had a jolly youthful looking cleavage - not a wrinkle in sight.

WideWebWitch · 21/09/2008 17:11

Oh well that makes me feel a bit less of a pervert saddo Soren

Since the entire Arthurian legend is a medieval confection based on a few scraps of sixth-century tradition I don't think we need to let historical accuracy bother us too much.
I thought it was quite entertaining, and a darn sight more plausible than Robin Hood.

motherinferior · 21/09/2008 18:49

I too suffered disproportionate Tomato Distress. Also the glass windows. And the multi-ethnic court.

KatyMac · 21/09/2008 18:50

So - now I have watched it

They have used the names - both human and place - but tbh that is all

It is a completely new story

OP posts:
florenceuk · 21/09/2008 19:28

yes there's no link with the traditional story at all. DS loved it though - knights!Swords!Magic!Dragons! success guaranteed.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 21/09/2008 19:53

Out of interest, how would people envisage a 'correct' version of the Arthurian legend? Sixth-century Wales or Malory-style medieval?

KatyMac · 21/09/2008 19:55

Post roman south west/south wales

OP posts:
LadyGlencoraPalliser · 21/09/2008 19:57

Have you read Rosemary Sutcliff's Arthurian books, Katy? I like the way she imagines it.

KatyMac · 21/09/2008 19:59

Probably

Which one was that?

I remember
Malory
Disney
Mary Stewart? Maybe?
Anne McCaffery

I have read hundreds tbh & they get vague

OP posts:
Katisha · 21/09/2008 20:03

Oh I just loved the Mary Stewart ones years ago. Nothing else compares!

KatyMac · 21/09/2008 20:04

Bernard Cornwall
Mark Twain

I cannot remember them all

OP posts:
DumbledoresGirl · 21/09/2008 20:06

Bernard Cornwell is my top favourite. Merlin is so sarky and crotchety in his books! Fantastic!

Mary Stewart used to be my favourite when I was younger though.
