Anyone else binged this today?

Really enjoyed it, all of the acting is brilliant.

I need to read the book now.

I have just watched the first two episodes and it’s excellent, the acting the setting the atmosphere all brilliant best series for some time

I read the book years ago and though I enjoyed it I found it a struggle to get through. I love John Steinbeck’s books my favourite being The Grapes of Wrath would love Netflix to make a series as good as this

I’m about two thirds of the way in and, to be honest, I’m finding it a bit of a chore. It wakes up in parts, with glimpses of promise and drama, only for all hope to be dashed as it reverts again to sullen men lamenting their lot.

It’s pretty to look at and well acted but it is slow and painfully literal.

Excellent series, read the book many years ago, so had forgotten bits ofbthe story.
Totally binged watched it.

'The tv series did not "miss" the point. They concluded that had it been written today the representation of Cathy would be that her early "trauma influenced her behaviour.'

I always thought Cathy was one of those people born with part of them missing. Not evil but per se, because I don't think she could behave any other way. Just born with the bit missing that encompasses empathy and sympathy.

She didn't have any early trauma though. That was the whole point.

Absolutely. She was born missing some fundamental part of being human.

I have seen this twice now. Once on my own and a second time with DH. I never do that
, enjoyed it both times. Its worth a watch. Depressing though.

Amazing series. Is it available on audiobook ?

JMSA · 22/10/2026 23:14

So in the book, was there no past/childhood trauma at all?

Baldrapunzel · 22/10/2026 23:18

Spoiler alert............The only trauma was caused by Cathy. I haven't read the book in a good few years but as I remember as a child she manipulated her peers, a teacher and her father before basically murdering her parents.

No, she was just born that way. Sam Hamilton says something like “it’s as though someone left a living breathing doll here” as she doesn’t express any emotions.
