My Brilliant Career

Couldn’t find a thread on this. Anyone just underwhelmed? Had high hopes after the Guardian review but it’s just silly and pretty basic so far. I’ll watch another episode but I’m disappointed. Love Anna Chancellor in anything though.

I loved the Judy Davis/Sam Neill version so have held off so far but will give it a go tonight.

I enjoyed it (but mildly irritated by the music). But I haven’t read the book and looking into it I got the impression a lot has been added (gay characters, Aboriginal heroines). Quite fun in its own right and a star performance from lead actress.

Funny to see Roddy Ho looking sexy!

I will read the book now.

Yea @Cooroowho knew Roddy was so fit! No typecasting for that lad.

I wanted them to get on with the career stuff per the title. I’ve not read the book, so I’ve no idea what should be in it.

I was drawn in when she was trying to write and then too many who will marry who episodes (which I clearly also watched) had me snoozing.

I am half way through and finding the compulsory DEI subplots unnecessary even though some of the acting is great. I read the book years ago and watched the original film. In some way it’s a sad story because “ My brilliant career” was pretty much all of the writer’s career as nothing she did afterwards measured up to it. I hope she had a good book deal at the time.

Me,I switched off after 15 mins.

FeliciaFancybottom · 19/08/2026 14:57

I hated it. I switched off after she started doing that ridiculous dance. It just felt like it had all been done before.

I am up to episode 4 but it’s just very different to the book. The acting is good although it is set in a bizarre 1900 where when an aboriginal girl has a relationship with a white man it’s the aboriginal family who are disapproving and friendships between white and aboriginal people are regarded as normal. The only time racism is shown it’s against the half Chinese posh man and even then it’s only the “ oiks” in the betting tent who are racist. Posh people are very liberal about race. What is the obsession with showing women enjoying open air urination and being fingered to orgasm as well? I was surprised the new version was written and directed by women as it seemed more designed for male titillation in places. The writing plays a very minor part in the story and just seems flowery “ dear diary “ stuff mainly. I will watch it until the end but I loved the first film which was more gritty and believable than this one.

I watched the first episode last night and didn't enjoy it. The lead actress was extremely irritating - she played Sybylla as some sort of manic pixie Edwardian girl, the kind who'd be all over Tiktok these days banging on about how quirky and not like the other girls she is.

It felt like we were being told she was this amazing, ahead of her times feminist character without actually being shown it. Does a ridiculous dance - so feminist! Takes a piss outside - so feminist! Even more disappointing to learn that the entire production team are women too.
