Anyone watching? It’s so well made and there are previous seasons also with different cases.

I really enjoyed it. Was disappointed with the verdict though.

Why?

Do you not think he did it?

Yes I’ve also watched, the accused was a horrible cocky bastard. I reckon even his advocate knew he was as guilty as sin.

Buzzer3555 · 14/08/2026 15:08

I thought he was a horrible man but there was definitely reasonable doubt.

DrFoxtrot · 14/08/2026 15:31

I agree and also thought there was reasonable doubt.

REP22 · 14/08/2026 15:37

Not watched it yet, but intend to tonight. The other cases featured in the Murder Trial series have been fascinating; really interesting and well-made programmes.

ExOptimist · 14/08/2026 15:40

I thought it was an excellent programme, very well made. I didn't realise there were others so I will watch them.
If I'd been on the jury I would have found him guilty.

bakingdisasterqueen · 14/08/2026 15:41

They're not actors, right? These are the real people?

Yes,the trial was filmed as it went along. Not everyone is shown, various witnesses and others have their faces blurred or voices digitally altered.

The actual people involved, yes.

The man didn't do himself any favours with his facial expressions in the court. Something as small as that could influence a jury.

managingexpectations · 14/08/2026 15:53

It’s a brilliant series and gives an accurate account of the court process and what it’s like being involved with this kind of investigation.
the other episodes in the series are so interesting to watch.
I felt so much second hand embarrassment for the first DC giving evidence! Unbelievable!
i hadn’t heard of this case despite living fairly locally it was a good result all round IMO

Yes, it's been legal to film criminal trials in Scotland since about 1992, I think (as long as they're not broadcast live).

@ExOptimist there are some really interesting cases; the one about poor Margaret Fleming (murdered by her carers) particularly striking for the bizarreness of the defendants, and another one where they tried a man for murders that had been committed in 1976 (and the bodies never found). All of them are worth watching.

Not sure how anyone could say that from watching less than 2 hours of footage of the 3 week trial, but obviously at least some on the jury agreed.

Gengha · 14/08/2026 17:21

There are also some on Channel 4, The Push about the husband who pushed his pregnant wife to her death from the top of Arthur’s Seat

Agreed that we only see an edited fraction- the programme is excellent but also edited to make it seem fifty/fifty to ensure it’s compelling.

i was shocked at the defendant’s behaviour with police and in court.

Yes. He was a horrible man. He’d made threats to other people that he’d shoot them. Thought the prosecution barrister was brilliant. Shame he only got 17 years.

Did he? Good

Gengha · 14/08/2026 22:19

Thank goodness there was still a conviction after the police fuck up at the outset

lordbaddingham · 15/08/2026 15:25

His wife was clearly lying for him, I can't imagine he was very much fun to live with having seen what he said about the police officer.

Edited

I was quite surprised she gave evidence, as I understand spouses can’t be forced to give evidence in Scotland so she must chosen to

i was also the same at “wooly top” what a prick

Triskellion75 · 16/08/2026 10:37

He really didn't do himself any favours did he? His wife was even worse.
