The Last House on Netflix

Has anyone watched this? It looked really good in the trailer. I watched it last night and am now feeling a bit "meh" about it.

It didn't go where I thought it was going to go, it sort of dragged on and went nowhere.

Have you read the books? It was a lot more faithful to those than the 1970s/1980s show. I loved it. When it came to crossing the creek, bring snowed in at Christmas, mystery fever and the final episode incident, I knew exactly what was going to happen as they were in the Little House book. They are filming a 2nd season which I think/hope will be based around the next book.

The books were sanitised for a young audience but they’re based on real life events. Nothing much did happen day to day I guess!

Hi , I think you have misread the title Grin. The Last House is a film released very recently on Netflix about a family trapped in their house.

I think you are talking about LHOTPrairie, which by the way I did absolutely love the new series. I loved all the books, had the boxset, still do somewhere. My DD wouldn't read the books or watch the tv show.

Whoops apologies!

Iloveagoodnap · 12/08/2026 13:52

I watched it. It started off good. I liked the premise of surviving in your house, and messaging your neighbours. But it got weird. And the ending was a bit convenient and unbelievable.

efeslight · 12/08/2026 14:07

Watched this yesterday with my teenage daughter. Was quite good, liked the first half more, then got a bit silly. Looking for more 'apocalyptic' films that are not too scary if anyone has suggestions. Really liked Signs, and Arrival.

Champagneandharibos · 12/08/2026 14:08

DD suggested we watch it. It was ok, a bit far fetched. My ongoing and primary thought was that it was super impressive they didn’t all murder each other. The 4 of us can manage all being cooped in the house together for probably 4 hours max. IRL that’s how it would have ended for us generating a 5 minute film…..they got on remarkably well 😂😂

usererror99 · 12/08/2026 14:15

I was looking forward to it but felt underwhelmed by the end …. There is far fetched when it comes to post apocalypse / sci fi films and then there was The Last House. All very odd

macaroon8 · 12/08/2026 22:25

Is it like the hammer house of horror one from the 70s/80s? Which was terrifying.

Children of men?

Screamingabdabz · 12/08/2026 22:28

I got half way through and ditched it. I just read the ending on Wikipedia. The married couple were far too unbelievable and twee for me to cope with watching the whole thing.

Kepler22B · 12/08/2026 22:35

I can normally suspend disbelief for crappy films and go with the flow of the story but this was just pushing credulity too far. There is no way that tiny, tiny footprint of soil would be enough to sustain them, even with the prey they were catching.

Then the ending - meh covers it. It went no where and didn’t even make sense. It started strong but just could keep the concept going as it didn’t really work.

I couldn’t finish it. Liked the concept but found it hard to connect to. Then the scene with the dog was hideous and freaked my 14 year old out so much that he had to sleep in my bed that night. He was unphased by things like Squid Games, but what they did with the dog really buried into his head, even hours later and watching a lot of comedy shows inbetween. I had been underwhelmed with it and the acting until that point too.

Omg I think I remember that one, did it turn out to be a dolls house ? I was scared of that one as a kid.

ilovemybluesharpie · 13/08/2026 14:21

Yes, I felt like it had so much potential, but then went weird.

I made the mistake of reading the Reddit comments whilst watching it and that ruined it for me , pointing out the glaring plotholes meant I couldn't take it seriously after that.

Epoisses · 13/08/2026 15:28

It passed a couple of hours. So many questions though.

allthemind · 14/08/2026 13:16

It started well I thought but then the ending seemed rushed. Why did it stop raining when their house fell in with the 4 creatures? What or who was locking them in? What was the friendly water? Where were all the other creatures? why did they call off the entire earth takeover because one of them was spared by a human? Silly.

NameChangeScot · 14/08/2026 13:25

Absolutely ridiculous, there's no way they would survive that whole time trapped in the house. It would not be possible.

It did get me and dp talking about how we wouldn't last long, we've got rid of all dvds, CDs etc because they take up space and we can stream everything, and I've paired back my books. We've a bit of food but with two teen boys they'd eat through it almost immediately! If it happened the day before the weekly shop we'd have almost nothing. Our garage is separate from our house so no access to tools etc. We're very minalmist and get rid of anything we don't use frequently.

MyThreeWords · 14/08/2026 13:37

Like other posters, I quite liked the initial set-up, and it was interesting to see the ways in which the family thrived during its lockdown. It was something a bit different and fresh.

But the actual reason for the lockdown, and the entire final third of the film was a mess - incoherent, cliched, daft and annoying. I actually took the small trouble to give it a Netflix thumbs down.

I was annoyed the dad wasn't challenged a bit more explicitly about his fantasy of being the one who kept the family going. There is some initial acknowledgement that it was mum and her veg patch that really helped, and that he was a bit of a nuisance. But then it seemed to slip towards accepting his view that his unappetising quasi-roadkill and RIDICULOUSLY IMPLAUSIBLE inventions made him everyone's manly saviour, sort of an alpha-male version of Wallace off of Wallace and Grommit.

Lentilcakes · 14/08/2026 13:43

Agree with others. Started well and then descended in to madness. Awful dog scene and hated the animals being fished out of the chimney!
We’d all last about a week cooped up w v little food!
