Do you leave the TV on for background noise?

Do you only put the tv on if you're going to sit and watch it or do you leave it on for background noise while you work or do housework etc?

It’s definitely only done in homes where there’s little conversation and low engagement with each other. We had one friend who did this - he was pretty bright but no conversation. The picture draws your attention and stifles conversation even if it is silent. When there are guests it signals you prefer the tv to talking to them. It’s rude. I advocate watching what you want and then turning it off! Saves electricity and who needs background pictures or sound? Completely unnecessary.

Exactly. I think it's incredibly rude to leave the TV on when there are guests. We stick it on for a couple of hours most evenings but haven't had it on during the day for decades

Velvera · 11/08/2026 13:07

OP didn't mention anything about having the TV on when you have guests?

Nourishinghandcream · 11/08/2026 13:07

Not the TV...no.

Radio fine but why run a TV when it isn't being watched?

Velvera · 11/08/2026 13:09

I've currently got the athletics on in the background. It's all my low intelligence can cope with.

Pleasedontdothat · 11/08/2026 13:11

Never - I only ever have the TV on if I’m watching something. I don’t channel surf or binge watch either. We have one TV in the house and it probably only gets turned on 2-3 times a week. If the house is feeling too quiet I’ll put the radio on. I used to work in TV so it’s not an anti-TV stance…

No, it's a really awful, low intelligence habit. Radio in the background is fine but tv should be on only when you wish to watch something.

That’s a very judgmental thing to say.

Epoisses · 11/08/2026 13:19

Never

MelonSorbet · 11/08/2026 13:21

No, that would drive me absolutely mad!

YouSawBrigadoon · 11/08/2026 13:23

No, never. We never put the tv on unless we going to watch something. Most evenings it’s off.

SirChenjins · 11/08/2026 13:23

No - but DH does and it drives me up the wall. I'm forever going into empty rooms and turning TVs off and then he'll claim he was listening to that - from another room on another floor. Don't think so, Mr Chen.

Roundaboot · 11/08/2026 13:24

No, I used to before having DS (nearly 19 years ago) but stopped doing it when he was a baby and noticed that his attention would get drawn to it. From then on, it was only turned on when we wanted to watch something and it's a habit I've stuck to ever since. I prefer a quiet house tbh, especially when I'm working. As I've got older I find it harder to concentrate on work even with music on

longtompot · 11/08/2026 16:24

I do, but just to stop my mind wandering quite so much as it likes to do when it's quiet. I also listen to the radio, not at the same time, but sometimes I just get fed up of music and need people talking

Exactly the same here! Except it was 18 years ago my DS1 was born 🙂

I enjoy the silence and calmness.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 11/08/2026 21:40

@Velvera Why have it on if you don’t care about the performances and the quality of the athletics? We watch sport but it’s the main event, not a background buzz.

OhFFS26 · 11/08/2026 22:25

It's certainly something people of low intelligence indulge in a lot more than people who are brighter, because noise levels just do not bother stupid people nearly as much.

But sometimes bright people do it too. Years ago, before the internet, I had a boyfriend who did this - he was an electronic engineer, nothing wrong with his IQ, he was just addicted to it, he said his mum used to plonk him in front of the telly with his sister as his dad had left them and she was desperate for a bit of time and peace.

It's just awful being in homes where this is the norm, and I was always turning it off unless we were watching something, and he'd get genuinely antsy and feel discomfort without the burbling background noise and flickering lights.

SabreIsMyFave · 11/08/2026 22:26

No. We either put a playlist on Alexa - or ask her to play a particular radio station, or we put a CD on.

clearlyy · 11/08/2026 22:27

Yes, every day, every night at all times. I must have background noise at all times or the silence is too loud. I’m AuDHD tho and I need something on in the background or my head feels like it’s going to blow up. Usually it’s just podcasts so people talking, not music all the time. I need the talking to even fall asleep.

I find this really mean. I don’t have low intelligence at all I just hate silence, it makes me feel lonely. I’m sorry if that makes me fucking thick I guess.

ExtremeDecluttering · 11/08/2026 22:36

Some awful judginess on this thread. A lot of people I know who do have TV or radio on all the time are ND and they absolutely need it to focus or relax. It does have the opposite effect on me, but that doesn't make me in any way better than those who prefer it.

There is so much talk radio about. As well as podcasts. I’d really recommend them over the tv.

Silverbirchleaf · 11/08/2026 22:39

Tend to leave the radio on fir background noise rather than the television, apart from during Wimbledon as I found the tennis sounds and commentary quite soothing

I am aware but what I have heard chat radio wise hasn't really interested me and I've not got into podcasts, but maybe I should. I quite often go the other way and get fed up with the telly and put a radio channel on it, usually 6music, but I do like dipping in and out of tv programmes when they are on in the background, especially if I am on here or crocheting.

I also don't have them on loud, like some posts have mentioned, and I don't think I am of low intelligence

RaininSummer · 11/08/2026 22:45

Never. I do have the radio or my music on about ninety percent of any day time at home though which is mainly Sunday or annual leave days.

why, there isn't anything inherently superior about podcasts/radio over TV.

FrenchandSaunders · 11/08/2026 12:23

No, my mum always said this was 'common' and it's stuck with me 😁

Exactly the same here. I only put the tv on in the evening. Having it on before 6pm just feels odd to me.
