This is being shown on UK Gold. It’s very interesting to watch as an adult now but I have to ask why Ann is with Martin. I mean he’s great to watch but as a person he’s just awful. I mean, if I were her, I would have had a wild fling with Paul but never expect anything serious from him.

I cannot for the life of me work out how old they are meant to be either?

I remember watching it, thinking ‘oh… he’s nothing like Tom Good’ and then realising that a lot of it was quite sad. Tragicomedy rather than ‘sitcom’ really.

the one where they go to a holiday cottage and Martin gets stuck in the loft

I remember! Howard comes to help and gets stuck too 😁 and Martin really doesn't want Paul to be asked to come and get them out 😆

Thanks for the heads up. We saw a few of these back in the 1980s. The only thing I can reliably remember about it now is the matching jumpers.

Re absence of children: it wouldn't just be down to infertility. The Pill and other forms of contraception had been widely available for a long time and some people made an active choice not to have children. The really jarring thing from a modern perspective is that a wife who didn't have children to look after had not found even a 'little' part-time job to keep her busy and to earn a bit of pin money.

Just remembered one detail I loved at the time - there was a scene where Ann was chopping vegetables very, very slowly, and when someone, probably Paul, asked why, she said she needed something to do to fill up her time. I laughed, but that's actually a very sad line.

At some point, Ann says she needs something to do or she'll go mad, and Martin suggests the Open University - so she then starts a degree with them

I rewatched a few years ago and think they are meant to be early to mid forties!

Then Paul pops his head through the loft hatch with a massive grin.

I remember this from the 70s/80s. Maybe I’ll have a rewatch!

We often refer to Howard and Hilda if we wear something similar or pick the same food whilst eating out (we’re veggie so limited choices!) My dad loved this show so it brings back fond memories

This has always been one of my favourite sitcoms. It is a gentle, subtle and mature take on middle class, middle aged suburban life. The cast is perfect and Richard Briers' portrayal of a man with what we used to call Asperger's Syndrome before it was ever diagnosed is a masterpiece.

I still use the phrase Harold & Hilda - if me and my DH are looking unintentionally matchy matchy. I say I will change or ask him to because we look like H & H.

when Paul moved in Martin says, snooping out of the window, that a bit of an element has moved it. I still say that too, if dodgy neighbours move in, oh no, an element has moved in. I fancied Paul. I was a teenager when it aired and my tastes were refined then! Now he looks smarmy.

Incidently in The Good Life in real life Richard B was 41-44 during the series and Felicity K was 28 -31. They didn’t look too dissimilar in agrs.

i also love the theme tune.

And me and DH often refer to “Kiddiminstering” 😜
