Dispatches: The Truth About Food Prices

So it is all down to speculators, like every other financial squeeze we are experiencing. They make lots of money, we pay the price.

Anyone else think that dozy mare isn't suffering much if she can't be bothered checking out the price of things as she does her shopping? And that comment about how her £700 per annum saving would pay for her shoes for a year - idiot.

TeaDr1nker · 23/06/2008 20:43

Love2bake · 23/06/2008 20:43

That waste is shocking

expatinscotland · 23/06/2008 20:45

TwoIfBySea · 23/06/2008 20:45

They are throwing so much out because they obviously have enough not to need to budget or plan their meals.

Does anyone else not through stuff out just because it has gone past it's sell by date - i am sure it is there because some boffin in brussels says it should, whatever happened to relying on your sense of taste/smell!!!!!

Nagapie · 23/06/2008 20:45

I was a bit like this - just bought things because that was the brand we had before/ seen advertised without considering the price .... not any more!!

expatinscotland · 23/06/2008 20:46

i never throw out by sell by date.

i go by using my sense of smell and eyes - i trust my brain more than some sticker.

Love2bake · 23/06/2008 20:49

The presenter is annoying me slighty.

ButterflyMcQueen · 23/06/2008 20:50

yes those folk were dreadful
obscene in fact
what was wrong with those potatos and veg

no exxcuse for it

TwoIfBySea · 23/06/2008 20:51

I took part in that YouGov survey, first time I've seen one I've done on tv.

Loaf 65p?

small one!

blithedance · 23/06/2008 20:55

I am not learning anything new here. It comes down to good old fashioned common sense and economy doesn't it? I thought it would be focusing on people who were really feeling the pinch, not the £120 a week brigade.

TwoIfBySea · 23/06/2008 21:06

65p, own brand it would be!

59p for Lidl wholemeal.

I was shocked at their food waste.
Today I found myself stripping a chicken carcass and freezing the meat. I am embarrassed to admit I would normally throw it away. No more though. We throw very little food waste out here. I try my best to plan my shopping and meals to avoid throwing food out needlessly.

expatinscotland · 23/06/2008 21:11

Started watching it, but I'm turning the channel.

Seriously, I really can't bring myself to give a rat's arse about some dumb ass bird who doesn't even look at the price and the 'job in the City' bs.

I mean, why can't these shows EVER show John Q. Public - not either someone who really doesn't have much of a care in the world or someone on benefits?

Twinklemegan · 23/06/2008 23:03

That programme made me really angry. Why exactly were they laughing off people throwing out perfectly good potatoes, broccoli, eggs and God knows what else? Those people should have been made to explain their actions and made to feel blardy guilty and stupid. People like that make me MAD.

And I totally agree with others here. How can a family of three eat anywhere near £200 worth of food in one week FGS?! What was the point of taking them to a budget supermarket to buy low quality, low welfare food as an alternative? How about getting them to plan what they need and budget, like the rest of us? Exactly what relevance do idiots like that have to the rest of us? GRRRRR.

expatinscotland · 23/06/2008 23:04

The moment that gal sniffed, 'I guess I'll have to economise then' I lost interest.

TeaDr1nker · 23/06/2008 23:12

Spooky, i strip down the carcass, mix with mayo and sweetcorn for a sandwich filler...

nkf · 23/06/2008 23:14

Okay. Who would cut the mouldy bit of cheese and eat the est of it. Or scrape the mould off the top of jam/marmalade and eat the rest of it. Who eats crusts? The thick end bit of the loaf not round the edges of sandwiches?

TwoIfBySea · 23/06/2008 23:14

expat, it doesn't matter. You know that numpty will just keep on buying what she wants to be seen buying. Can you imagine the neighbours finding out she had been to Lidl? Oh the horror. You can practically hear the posh equivalent of net curtains flapping.

OP posts:
Flum · 23/06/2008 23:19

NKF. I do all those things. but don't really check prices in supermarket. I shop in expensive supermarket but buy pretty basic foods, not prepared stuff. I reckon I do spend £120 a week though including meat, booze and nappies easily. shameful I spose. am also guilty of throwing out half eaten salad all the time.... not very organised.

Carmenere · 23/06/2008 23:20

Mouldy cheese doesn't bother me in the slightest.
I have been known to scrape the mould off jam and I often eat the heels of bread. But then I also feed a family of 5 on 130 pounds a week (including wine). I will have to try harder to plan though as everything is getting more expensive.

TeaDr1nker · 23/06/2008 23:23

I eat crusts - infact it is the best , covered in butter and marmite

Carmen, i think you do bloody well feeding a family of 5 on 130£
