Anyone watching this?

Really shocked when I heard that surgeon just say as part of the conversation that he'd woke up to a machete and been hogtied in a burglary! I know obviously the programme isn't about that so it's not like it was going to dwell on that but bloody hell

Then Joyce at the end 😢😢
Made me cry that
She seemed so lovely and it seemed like there was real hope for her. I don't know what the complications were cos they said she was cancer free but really sad, too young still

Is that this weeks one? Love this series but haven’t watched the new one yet.

purpleme12 · 15/05/2026 14:03

Yes

Yes, that doctor recalling that dreadful incident was chilling.

Poor Joyce! The trouble is, that was extremely invasive surgery. My DH had a minor procedure on his pancreas and subsequently had complications. A week later he died. So I know that type of surgery carries a lot of risks.

Whataflippincircus · 20/05/2026 22:46

Gosh that was a hard watch tonight.

Gosh that was a hard watch tonight.

Oh it was. The lovely lady Kate having such major horrible surgery and dying what a year later? Such a lovely family too. Heartbreaking.

LIZS · 21/05/2026 13:37

Indeed, so sad after she recovered from the surgery itself so well.

Just seemed shocking that they didn't know the extent of the spread until post op.
What with scans and biopsies etc you'd think the Drs should have known?

To go through a 12hr op, the pain, the massive impact on speech and eating and drinking. You wonder if she'd have gone through if all if they'd known only months to live.

So very sad.

LIZS · 21/05/2026 13:47

She’d had scans a couple pf weeks before the op and it had spread since. I think the risks and benefits are well explained but without treatment she would not even have had that year.

purpleme12 · 21/05/2026 13:55

I've not had chance to watch this week's yet

I know! I’ve been thinking about her and her lovely family today. That poor woman and her poor family.

It's strange how some patients stories stay with you. She seemed to be trying hard to put a brave face on and her tearfulness was so moving. Her husband, kids and lifestyle all seemed idyllic. Horribly sad.

purpleme12 · 27/05/2026 13:10

Interesting to hear that they can only use 20 per cent out of all the organs they're offered

purpleme12 · 27/05/2026 14:39

That was really really upsetting

I couldn't even watch that operation

And then she died 😢😢😢

Really really sad

Those cats at the end ❤️❤️

Whataflippincircus · 31/05/2026 22:20

Yes, high fiving cats. I didn’t know you could teach a cat to do that.

What amazing surgery that man had, truly amazing.

purpleme12 · 11/06/2026 23:43

Wow this one last week had to lose his voice

Yes, he was so brave about it.

Wow this one last week had to lose his voice

There wasn't any follow up I wonder how he did. I hope it wasn't like that previous lady who had extensive very life altering surgery and then died.

This gentleman not only had his larynx removed but his oesophagus too. Oesophageal cancer generally has a poor long term survival rate. I know we'd all do whatever we could to survive but you can't help wondering if the surgeons are being realistic about the odds in some cases on this programme.

purpleme12 · 12/06/2026 08:41

It did show him at the consultant's appointment a bit after. It said he'd managed to swallow and eat some food so it was a good update they said. He wrote on a piece of paper 'I'll be fine.' so it gave the impression it was healing positively..

I think it said at some time in future they'll try to restore some sound/voice for him if they can

I does Surprise me how many of them die fairly soon after apparently successful surgery. But it’s tricky to tell how much the program is over dramatising, what for the surgeons is actually pretty routine surgery.

purpleme12 · 12/06/2026 16:01

But most of the people they show on each series recover ok after

It's still a minority of the people they show who die fairly soon after

Shocked to see the young thoracic surgeon had died in this week’s programme.

purpleme12 · 12/06/2026 17:21

Can't remember him but that's really young to die ☹️

Love this programme although didn’t realise the new series was on.

The surgeon in series3 episode 3 where they did the double lung transplant at Papworth is Marius Burman, and he performed my heart transplant.
