The Miracle Club with Maggie Smith - BBC iPlayer

This was in fact the last film Maggie Smith made and is now available on BBC iPlayer.

If you like the later series of Call the Midwife ie after the edgy original based on the books and All Creatures Great and Small you might like this.

Nearly all female cast with Kathy Bates, Laura Linney, Brenda Fricker and many others.

I found it a bit smaltzy but a relief from hectic crime dramas, and supposedly high tech thrillers!

BBC Two - The Miracle Club

1967. Three Dublin wives and a prodigal daughter hope to heal their lives in Lourdes.

Ooh thanks for the recommendation. I do get tired of all the frenetic crime dramas/thrillers on these days.

I watched it and enjoyed it a lot.

I watched it and enjoyed it a lot.

I did enjoy it, but I dont know if its a new thing, or I've only just realised it, but I find the endless back ground music distracting.

So on one level never really got absorbed in it.

But certainly dont regret watching it!

I enjoyed it but as a regular to Lourdes, they got loads of things wrong! You don’t sit in the baths, they are too bloody cold for a start!

I’ve never been to Lourdes, but my daughter’s friend went a few years ago, as a helper. She accidentally set fire to the person in front, during a candlelight procession, and made it worse by slapping at them and shouting, “Oh shit, oh shit!” She was relived it was the last night and she’s not been back since. She is actually a lovely young lady but I giggle every time I think of it. 🤣

🤣🤣 I’ve done that a few times. We used to be strictly told to drop them if they catch fire. The shades are paper. Naked flames and thousands of people in close proximity, it’s the miracle of Lourdes that no one has been injured.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/05/2026 20:58

Just re read that. I thought you said set fire to the candle shade. Not a person. I’ve not done that. 🤣

Having seen this thread I've just watched it. Yes, a change from all the crime films. I enjoyed it. Especially Maggie Smith. Thank you for the recommendation.

I've tried to find video clips of the young boy singing in the competition.

Seemed to have an amazing voice. But there aren't any.

Sad

I think I googled it as I wanted to know the song. He really has got a lovely voice.

This expires tomorrow night at 8.45pm, so I'm planning on watching it tonight. Sometimes a gentle film is what's needed and I'm hoping it's a bit like Finding Your Feet in feel.

By accident (I can never remember what I have watched) I found on BBC iPlayer "Their Finest".

If you want a feel good (some sad parts) with a bit of a feminist twist you might enjoy this.

I am sure some will say a bit too sentimental for a war film, but had lots of big names in it.

Their Finest

1940, London. With the country's morale at stake, Catrin, an untried screenwriter from Ebbw Vale, and a makeshift cast and crew work under fire to make a film to lift the nation's spirits.

Previous post has reminded me of another film about WWII, but its on Apple.

Quite moving and apart from a couple of scenes that are really upsetting something that (not very young) children might enjoy. And "educational" about how tough life can be.

About a boy who accidentally gets separated from his mother.

Oh I love Their Finest! One of my favourite films. The book it’s based on is good too (by Lissa Evans).
