Sexist comment on Homes Under the Hammer about son and daughter roles

Villanousvillans · 30/04/2026 13:32

On an episode today of Homes under the hammer, a couple with two children have bought a plot to build a house. The man is a builder. Dion Dublin asked the boy if he gets stuck in with dad to knock walls down. He then turned to the girl and asked her if she would help mum with interior design and fluffy cushions.

This blatant everyday sexism in 2026 is disturbing.

I saw this and thought the same!
’i want to help mummy with the designing’

GoodkneeBadKnee · 30/04/2026 13:34

I'm not disturbed by this.

IdaGlossop · 30/04/2026 13:38

Appalled. In the 1980s, my 20-something brother gave me a hammer drill as a present. We shouldn't be having to have conversations about gender roles 40 years later.

Good for you. 🙄

I remember being a child and a relative asked me 'Would you like to be a nurse when you grow up?' and I thought 'If I were a boy, I'd have been asked if I wanted to be a doctor'.

The relative would be about 120yrs old now.

HughManity · 30/04/2026 13:47

@Villanousvillans , complain. If it was on the BBC, put as much detail in the complaint as you can - date& time, who said it and to whom etc.

Edited

In the 1970s, a careers advisor at school asked me if I wanted to be a nurse or a secretary. I wanted to be neither.

HughManity · 30/04/2026 14:10

I've complained about a few things over the years but not without reason.
There is no point in whingeing about it - if enough people complain we'll get results.

coulditbeme2323 · 30/04/2026 14:11

How many women builders do you see?

ArtShow · 30/04/2026 14:16

You've got to see it to be it

They exist and there would probably be more of them if people weren't planting ideas in children's heads that there was such a thing as girls/boys jobs.

But there is though isn't there?

I mean we can pretend there isn't, but how many little girls want to be brick layers?

Booooooooom · 30/04/2026 14:38

I would love to be a brick layer. I think it’s quite a creative role. We had a really hard time finding a good one to do an outside wall and he did an amazing pattern

Villanousvillans · 30/04/2026 14:41

I have my painting and decorating done by a woman. She’s absolutely excellent. She’s the only female trades person I know of.

It's because it's never shown to be an option.
Little girls play with mega-bloks and lego.

I don't know when I learnt that there were such jobs as bricklaying. scaffolding etc.

Growing up, the occupations I knew of were schoolmaster (m), schoolteacher (f) doctor, dentist, nurse, solicitor, accountant, vicar, mechanic, builder, electrician, plumber, engineer, architect, factory worker (m if engineering, f if clothing), shop assistant, cook (f), chef (m), dinner lady, school caretaker, newsagent, author etc

All were clearly defined as male or female. A nurse was female, a doctor was male, otherwise they were a male nurse or a lady doctor.

Newnamethisway · 30/04/2026 16:28

Agree and equally the boy might do interior design.

HughManity · 30/04/2026 17:45

Homes Under the Hammer is on BBC. I had no idea.
It is worth complaining even though you'll probably get fobbed off.

There's plenty of women DIYers on YouTube, doing the heavy lifting

HughManity · 30/04/2026 18:41

Yes but it's not the same as your DF/DU/DB/friend's DF etc being one.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 30/04/2026 20:20

I mean, I wouldn't complain to ofcom 😩 but I agree, shocking that was aired

HughManity · 30/04/2026 20:31

I meant complain to the Beeb.
