Anything romantic.

FlatErica · 28/04/2026 18:03

Romances. Family-centric films.

BellaPommefritio · 28/04/2026 18:08

Anything too gentle and badly produced- New Tricks, Death in Paradise, Good Ship Murder etc. These sort of programmes seem to be what Lovejoy and The Royal were some years ago. I need complex gritty dramas which have realistic characters and dialogue so I care what happens! To be fair, I've never watched this sort of thing but the expectation that this is what I perhaps should be watching at my age now annoys me!

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 28/04/2026 18:15

Anything about serial killers.

Triskellion75 · 28/04/2026 18:19

Anything with child abuse/murder.

EnglishBreakfastTea1 · 28/04/2026 18:23

SA of anyone, child murders, cults, and women in poor relationships, because of my life experience.

i love romances though. I don’t like explicit sex scenes though.

I like a good police procedural.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 28/04/2026 18:25

Anything too serious.

I don't mind a bit of grimness in my TV, but I need it offset with a bit of humour, love, lightness.

Funnily enough, an advert for Outlander came up while I read this thread, and it's a perfect example. There are some absolutely horrific scenes in that show, but the rest of it makes up for it. The darkness serves to contrast the lightness, rather than overwhelm it.

When that lightness is missing, that's what completely turns me off a show.

user6791 · 28/04/2026 18:26

Anything made post-2015

They're all bad remakes and/or just not fun

Manchestermummax3 · 28/04/2026 18:32

Anything like Naked Attraction,
Virgin Island & dating shows.

Pretty much all reality tv (except the traitors)

Talent shows

Most quiz shows.

I have also stopped watching soaps, my last to go was Eastenders it was just absolute rubbish and why was it so loud

Ive also stopped watching BGT and I'm a celebrity.

Lomonald · 28/04/2026 18:37

An advert just came on for Virgin island and I almost died with embarrassment 😳

Charlottian · 28/04/2026 18:41

Horror films. Loved them when I was young, hate them now.

elQuintoConyo · 28/04/2026 18:43

Anything with rape. I avoided Game of Thrones after reading about it. It makes me sick.

Yeah, I wont watch it either, far to gratuitous for me.

Notmyreality · 28/04/2026 18:48

Children’s programmes

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/04/2026 18:49

Loads of grunting/thrusting unrealistic sex. I just feel so badly for the poor actors. I'm trying to enjoy The Affair at the moment, and whilst obviously it's about an affair that started off with sex and the sexual chemistry is a lot of what binds the two main characters together, they amount they (and nearly all the peripheral adult characters) had to moan and writhe through, with an awful lot of naked flesh on show. It just feels gruesome and exploitative. I find American shows and films a lot more prone to this than UK ones.

Sid9nie · 28/04/2026 18:51

Child death as a back story or plot point.

JeremiaBoogle · 28/04/2026 19:04

Anything that’s overly macho and male-heavy, where every scene seems to be men trying to outdo each other in being the most rugged and deep-voiced 🤣 And even worse when the women are just there in support roles, or are ridiculously more attractive than their supposed partner for no believable reason.

I struggle with action films too (probably for all of the above 😃).

And I’m not really into comedies that are just “here’s a joke… and here’s another joke…” either. I don’t even fully know why, because taken individually I’d probably laugh at some of the jokes! I just don’t seem to find that style funny as a whole film. I somehow managed to watch The Naked Gun without so much as a smile, which probably says a lot 😅.

Children’s programmes

I quite like rewatching old stuff from my childhood on YouTube. No interest in Bluey or whatever the flavour de jour is, but I can take any amount of Bagpuss!

My dad is 80 and watches retro Noddy for a bit of a giggle - he's got all his marbles too!

BobbySheenSomethingNewToDoNsoul · 28/04/2026 19:08

Anything with that orange pointless git
Joe Swash.

ainsleysanob · 28/04/2026 19:11

Rom-Coms, Horrors and anything ‘true story’ that involves child abuse.

I’m very boring and tend to only watch war films, disaster films and Game of Thrones/Ted Lasso on repeat! Although I did watch Project Hail Mary on Sunday and loved it!

RedRiverShore6 · 28/04/2026 19:12

Anything described as 'gritty'

SuperGinger · 28/04/2026 19:14

Anything with child death or abuse.

Badbadbunny · 28/04/2026 19:15

Anything with artificial/canned laughter.

Anything with over-emphasised irrelevant back stories distracting from the main plot/story.

Anything padded out with too much long lingering scenes like showing a single teardrop falling - just cut the crap and get on with it.

Anything padded out showing drone shots of the lead actor driving their car across moorland, coastal roads, between farmers' fields etc - again, cut the crap and just get on with the story.

Anything with "bingo card" tick boxes of cast, i.e. the gay, the lesbian, the ethnic, the disabled, for no relevant reason and not part of the story line - again just "padding" mentioning that, say, Jack is gay, or Jill is married to a woman, when it's not relevant to the story in any way. (Completely different for the likes of that woman with Autism helping the York police detectives as she's actually using her "disability" skills for good, so a vital part of the story - sorry can't remember her name).

devildeepbluesea · 28/04/2026 19:15

Those really annoying films and shows where half the shots are so dark you can’t see what the hell’s going on. Drives me rounds the twist. Apparently it’s to create “atmosphere”. All it does is make me turn it off.

Anything reality. I’ve never watched reality and I never will. It’s cheap, tedious and repetitive.

Remakes of perfectly good shows from the 80s and 90s. Bergerac was a perfectly good show, we didn’t need it reimagining.
