A few things didn’t add up for me and I can’t help but wonder who was paid for information or the instrument itself.

I fell asleep so can’t help, sorry. Grin

Oh dear 😅 I really enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed it too. But I was very confused that the woman who had it said she realised it was Paul McCartney's guitar when she was cataloguing guitars, so she knew she had to give it back. Then it was also said that it was tracked down after some detective work and they went to get it back. Which was it?

coloursquare · 11/04/2026 23:00

Yes - really enjoyed it

begonefoulclutter · 11/04/2026 23:06

I've sat through many a long documentary about the Beatles (obsessed DH) and this was the first one I really enjoyed watching.

Still not quite sure how that woman ended up with it though.

worrisomeasset · 11/04/2026 23:14

I was disappointed to find that the bass wasn’t nicked by Hawkwind.

likelysuspect · 11/04/2026 23:17

I enjoyed it even though I couldnt really follow the story or the people or the twists and turns

Why for example were they talking about Mccartney not remembering or mentioning the bass was stolen, or did I misunderstand

I didnt understand how the woman found it

I didnt understand the relevance of the german bloke (was he german?)

I also didnt understand why his brother Mike has a sort of 'posh' accent.

SwedishEdith · 11/04/2026 23:18

Yes, enjoyed it. What didn't add up?

SwedishEdith · 11/04/2026 23:23

Which German bloke - Klaus Voorman? He played bass on various Beatles albums and designed the Revolver sleeve. There was also Nick who was English but worked for Hofner in Germany.

I would love to have had tracked something down like this. Love getting obsessed about things like this.

Well, when Macca began the quest for his lost bass, he somehow forgot to mention that he'd known it had been nicked all those decades ago, and had indeed chatted to a newspaper journalist about it at the time - who was included in the doc. That knowledge might have narrowed down the quest.

It ended up being with a woman in Sussex but tbf this wasn't made clear at all - she was part of the pub family who'd traded it off the guy who nicked it but didn't know it was Macca's, she was one of those who wasn't interviewed and as another poster says, it's unclear whether she twigged it was Macca's bass - her story - or whether she was forced into handing it over by the detective work tracing it to her, and she did seem to have an awful lot of other guitars in her possession given it was a random family heirloom.

The German guy was Klaus Voorman who met the Beatles pre-fame in Hamburg and with his friend Astrid hung out with them, she got them to comb their hair forwards for the Beatle look. So he knew a bit about the original bass - he also designed the Revolver album cover, played bass on Lennon's Plastic Ono Band project and also produced Trio's Da Da Da single in the early 80s.

Can't help you with his brother's 'posh' accent!

Handeyethingyowl · 11/04/2026 23:36

Mike McCartney’s accent sounds fairly typical (old school?) ‘well-spoken’ Liverpudlian (as opposed to scouse). My neighbour who was roughly the same age sounded similar. They lived in a relatively middle class area as teens I think.

I need to watch this programme!!

So the woman who found it, who was pictured talking standing next to a car and said she found Mccartneys house 'over the fields', was that the same woman who was in a sleevless dress sitting on a sofa with a husband (?) with nasal tubes?

And if they werent the same woman, who was the woman on the sofa?

Agree re Mike McCartney's accent. The scally Brookside accent wasn't really around in the 60s.

Thats really interesting because when I googled it after the programme, the google results all mentioned Mick Mccartney having a really strong, much stronger than Paul, Liverpool accent and I thought that was odd. I dont think I would have detected Liverpudlian if I didnt know.

Joolsin · 11/04/2026 23:46

I think the woman beside the taxi was the niece of the woman in the armchair - it jumped from "it must be in a loft in Hastings" to "here it is" without a link!!! We were confused too, but still enjoyed the programme - what a miracle that the guitar actually survived all those years.

The woman on the sofa was the sister of the two lads whose dad acquired the guitar. Graham had died and the other had left his wife and moved to Hastings with his new wife/partner. The woman on the sofa no longer spoke to him. The guitar hander overer was his partner? Presumably, there was definitely something shady about it still and some people don't want to be identified as they were linked to a known stolen guitar.

He looks and sounds frail now but definitely sounded still Scouse to me. I know I have a Liverpool accent but a lot of people not from Liverpool say they can't tell 😄. But I do know I have one. It's not always broad.

the80sweregreat · 12/04/2026 12:00

I was a bit lost with how it was eventually found and I was distracted by how they interviewed Paul McCartney from a distance on what looked like an uncomfortable chair.

Oh Im a great chair analyser on programmes. I thought the chair looked great and I thought thankfully someone has provided a decent chair that you can sit upright on with a decent height with arms

The interview with Bob Mortimer, which I remember watching at the time, had the most awful chairs, PM is way too tall for that type of height, you couldnt sit back in it without being very laid back and it looked uncomfortable to sit in leaning forward which is what you tend to do when engaged in conversation

I spend a lot of time thinking about important matters like this and have decided that should I ever become famous and need to be interviewed, I will make a fuss about what chair I have to sit in.

the80sweregreat · 12/04/2026 12:43

I get your point re chairs, but it looked a bit uncomfortable! However, I’m sure he was fine and I did enjoy this documentary a lot.

GellerYeller · 12/04/2026 12:56

I’m looking forward to watching this. I’ve done the Beatles tour-the McCartney house is in a relatively less modest area to George and Ringo. Just round the corner is the house John grew up in and that is more affluent. Stu Sutcliffe’s family home was in a very nice area near the cathedral.
Slightiy off topic, but I love guitars so please indulge me! Johnny Marr took a young Noel Gallagher guitar shopping in Doncaster. To a shop owned by Yungblud’s family. Apparently it was well regarded. In later years, the owners charged with handling large numbers of stolen guitars. It was mentioned in a Louis Theroux interview. Edit for spelling!

Gettingbysomehow · 12/04/2026 12:59

I watched 10 minutes. It was as boring as hell. Who cares about a missing guitar. Certainly not me.

stayathomegardener · 12/04/2026 15:04

Yes, the woman by the taxi who handed over the guitar appeared to be someone with a surprisingly large collection and knowledge of guitars for Cathy from Hastings new partner of Graham’s brother (Graham son of pub landlord Ron who played the guitar as a child and then ended up with it before dying in a car accident)
As someone who knows Sussex well Paul McCartney also wouldn’t be living ‘over the fields’ from Hastings.

Re Paul’s recollections he liked to say he thought it might be hanging over a fireplace in a Bavarian Castle implying he felt it was mislaid during the Beatles time when clearly he was told considerably later during the Wings era of its theft and even discussed it with journalists around that time.

I did feel for the key ambulance man that didn’t seem ready to confront his father’s behaviour.

I loved the pencil illustrations punctuating the story.

likelysuspect · 12/04/2026 15:55

So let me get this straight

Ambulance man's dad, stole the guitar

Guitar was given to pub landlord Ron who play it a few times and later died in a car accident?

Graham is Ron's son and Graham had a brother. Graham is dead but the brother lives on and Cathy is the partner of the brother? Who has a guitar collection?

Woman on the sofa is Graham and brother's sister. Man on sofa is woman on sofa's husband? And he didnt even like the Beatles.

Ron gave it to Graham. Graham was quite musical, I think.
