Possible tw. Babies

Do I need to swerve this? I normally love a drama, relationships, marriage/family etc

But I am worried this might just destroy me, long TTC journey with a 🌈 at the end but still might hit too close to home....

It looks good but I'm newly divorced in the mix, so might be just too much of a rollercoaster.

Anyone else gonna watch/avoid?

@Coclare yes Dave was a strange character wasn’t he. He desperately wanted to connect with his son didn’t he and that and the pancakes were pretty much the only time he did. Agreed it was a complete case of arrested development. Alison was a complex one too.

@cloudtreecarpet yes me too. Over 2 nights. I felt like I lived with them in their flat by the end of it!

I thought they made Lisa in particular look too granny like in the final scenes. Hilarious attempts at aging them by putting them in cardigans and grey hair. I’m their age now and I don’t think that was an entirely accurate depiction!

I loved the whole thing. Maybe the slow moving / observational aspect of it is not for everyone but it all just felt so real because of that didn’t it?

The same director did a similar style show called ‘marriage’ with Nicole Walker and Sean Bean which I also loved if you have not seen.

Yes, I loved Marriage too.
I think you either love that kind of real-life paced observational stuff or hate it.

The aging thing was funny. When it first cut to the male character I thought "What has he got in his hair?" - like he has been painting or something 😂.
But I loved that we saw that glimpse into the future, that was well done I thought.

I think the glimpse into the future was interesting. There were no other children so we don’t know if that was a choice to stop after one or if they endured further losses - both heavy paths emotionally and we don’t know if/how any of this was resolved. Also Stephen still unable to speak his pain with his son - when son was packing his case etc but his love language was acts of care, jumping up to get him extra bacon etc.

I’m watching now … highly unlikely a woman like Amanda would put up with Dave.

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 06/04/2026 12:35

Well I have just finished this marvelous piece of TV. What an emotional rollercoaster that final episode was.

I have to say I loved this series so much and feel like I have been on the whole journey with Lisa and Stephen.

Just loved the glimpse into the future, I thought it was fabulous.

All in all I have really enjoyed this and love the slow pace and awkward silences and cringeworthy scenes which made it feel so much more real.

I think it becomes apparent further into the series that she is emotionally disconnected from the world. On reflection the putting on her hoodie after sex with him is heartbreaking.

@Coclare i agree I’m stil watching it and understand it much more. It’s brilliant 😟

the80sweregreat · 06/04/2026 15:17

Maybe you should also put that there are spoilers on this thread op. I couldn’t find the original thread which is tv pace. It doesn’t bother me as I have seen it all now, but it may spoil it for people who don’t like to binge watch.
I found it a bit slow at times, but I did enjoy it overall. It was a typical drama from this writer with its ups and downs.

familyissues12345 · 06/04/2026 15:28

I loved it and we went through multiple losses, including missed miscarriages. DH tried to put me off watching, but I ignored him Grin, and pleased I did. I thought it was beautifully done

I found the main characters a bit uninteresting, enough so that I didn’t make it through the first episode.

I agree

I also absolutely hate the phrase “rainbow baby” no baby should be labelled as such!

I had a miscarriage between 1st and 2nd child and someone said that to me I was very quick to tell them!

Anyone can label their own baby as they see fit.

It’s not up to you to call it for them.

Feel free to reject that for yourself and but you have no place to tell the OP of this thread how she refers to her own experience.

I am amazed at how he writes, have watched all his shows apart from Marriage Story and they completely break me in two every time, the inability for the men to open up in this one is particularly heartbreaking, had me in tears at one point!

Agree. It’s incredibly unique. I think Mum was a masterpiece with so many magnificent actors.

Absolutely agree.

I think the scenes with Stephen and Dave and their 'small talk' and long silences, both struggling to say what they really want to say to one another were brilliant. You could hear a pin drop at times with the awkward silences and as a viewer you feel you are in the room with them.

Also the scenes with Stephen and his Dad. And how you could see he was so desperate to talk to his Dad and his Dad just kept deflecting and obviously didn't want him to. Was painful to watch and I really felt moved by it.

Great drama. But I love this kind of slow, gritty stuff.

the80sweregreat · 07/04/2026 09:08

It has some parallels with Mum , but I enjoyed that more than this ( although this is good and has its moments !)
The two main leads keep it real.

Perfidia · 07/04/2026 11:02

I was reluctant to start this because I didn’t feel I had the emotional energy right now - but I clicked to see a few minutes and binged the entire series yesterday evening.

It felt so familiar and so of a piece with the writer’s past work. The endless snacking - so very ‘Mum’! And the unspoken traumas - exactly ‘Marriage’. And I loved both of those.

It’s such an impressive body of work. Though I constantly feel I would want to see these shows on stage - where the heightened character portrayals and inarticulacy would work brilliantly. (I admit I suspect viewers who hated ‘Marriage’ just don’t like, or have the patience for, theatre.)

My God, Paapa Essiedu is a wonder. I could watch emotions emerge and travel across his face for, well, a lifetime. I actually prefer him in non-domestic roles, but I suppose they’re inevitable at his particular age.

Admired the specificity of the characters’ clothes - although I was ready to set fire to the burgundy bomber jacket of doom after a very short time. It was a master stroke by the wardrobe department!

Five stars from me.

Yes the burgundy bomber - rain or shine, winter or summer for years on end - drove me potty but as you say obviously very deliberate - the colour wasn’t an accident.

The slowness, snacking, untidiness etc also reminded me of The Royal Family - both series have a mundane setting but the deep emotions and love come through and show up even more so.
