Things you notice aren't right on TV shows

I'm just starting to watch the TV drama The Lady. After the police are in the flat it switched to a scene with Charles and Diana's wedding accompanied by I Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode - that hadn't been released.

Both were 1981.
The wedding was July and song released in the September.
The producers probably just used songs from the years and we're not pedantic down to the exact month.

My irritation on long term TV shows where there is no continuity with dates. E.g friends, birthdays changing or history of characters changing.

Sometimes it’s the language they use.
Words that have more recently come into use but back-along just wouldn’t be known in everyday parlance.

I can’t think of an example but for instance was “dude”used in times gone by - pre-war for example?

Anytime a teacher’s significant other turns up at their classroom door on TV. They wouldn’t get past the gate without a grilling from reception!

eyespartyparty · 11/03/2026 21:44

Coffee cups being waved around with obviously nothing in! So annoying! Just put water in or something!!!!

AddictedToTea · 11/03/2026 21:49

Oooh, I have another one! I’ve just started watching the Good Doctor (yes, 7 years behind everyone else!) and the resident surgeons keep nipping out of the hospital! Last episode had two take a soon-to-be blind child out to see a baseball game and drive a car and another one had a surgeon track down a dying woman’s ex-husband on a building site! I know it isn’t the NHS but I’m sure that isn’t normal practice in US hospitals either!

begonefoulclutter · 11/03/2026 21:51

Modern saddlery on the horses being ridden in period dramas.

BillyBites · 11/03/2026 21:53

Suitcases are never heavy.
And when someone randomly decides to leave their partner during a row, they never have to go in the loft to get one, they have one to hand already, they throw a couple of bits in and they’re good to go.

I’m watching it too - and agree!

The huge breakfasts that the mum's always make and the kids are always in a rush then just grab an apple and leave for school. That will not suffice them until they get to eat their lunch out of that brown paper bag you handed to them!!

Modern saddlery on the horses being ridden in period dramas.

And horses pulling carriages over long distances at a gallop.

Oh, and pre-motor carriage roads that just have two wheel tracks with grass in the middle, when horses’ hooves would also have worn down the centre of the track.

Briewedge · 11/03/2026 22:02

Suitcases/luggage being lifted like it's a feather ie nothing in it. You can always tell if the luggage is empty. A Suitcase is hard to pick up when full !

I always notice background actors. They walk at odd speeds in several directions throughout the central characters' one conversation. One recently entered the same door three times.

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/03/2026 22:04

In the most recent series of Call The Midwife there has been some yellow floral fabric hanging up just inside the door of Violet Buckles shop which is a M&S curtain and duvet design from the mid 70s. I know because I had those curtains hanging up in my childhood bedroom.

Briewedge · 11/03/2026 22:05

I can also tell when a scene has been put together in several takes. Hair is subtly different, drives me mad they get these things inconsistent

WhatAMarvelousTune · 11/03/2026 22:06

It annoys me when the number of rooms in a hose changes. I think this is probably more of a thing on soaps, and I’ve only seen Neighbours, but it would just be the case that the house would have however many bedrooms the plot needed.
Someone needs to move in? Great, there’s a spare room.
Someone needs to move in but for plot reasons can’t? Unfortunately, no spare bedroom.

Netaporter · 11/03/2026 22:06

Just finished watching ‘Gone’ on ITVX. Mildly Annoyed by the premise that the school rugby season was due to finish at the same time A levels were being sat. No they wouldn’t be, Rugby finishes before Easter…it’d be cricket by the time A levels were being sat.

As ex-motor trade I always look at the cars allegedly around during a period piece (such as the Lady) and think ‘well that model wasn’t available then ‘ etc. mind you, the scrappage scheme meant a ton of old cars got removed from the vehicle parc, so finding an accurate 1984 Fiesta or whatever is a bit tricky.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 11/03/2026 22:07

The breakfast one gets me too. Mum ( and it’s always mum) makes a full on cooked breakfast and all anyone does is grab a slice of toast and say they are late and have to go.
All houses have bi folding doors which lead to immaculate gardens. Yet the couple living there both have to work in quite ordinary jobs. The houses all have beautiful expensive kitchens. Again, how do they afford it?

AsparagusSeason · 11/03/2026 22:08

I annoy myself because I notice continuity errors all the time. My husband never does. Stupid things like a bag on the opposite shoulder, or changes in hair or position. It’s very distracting.

StudyinBlue · 11/03/2026 22:10

If a character has to drive somewhere, even in the busiest of cities, they always find a parking space right outside or within a few metres of the address they’re going to. No driving round for hours, finding a space in a street a mile away and having to pay for an hour on an app.

Runningmanwaswrong · 11/03/2026 22:11

Ooh good. I have several rants about locations.
Silent Witness - I know it's crap but I still watch it. The new series had an episode where a man was being chased through Birmingham. The editing made no sense. Started running through Digbeth (not far from Selfridges), then the Great Western Arcade, back over Selfridges car park bridge, then he paused for breath outside St Phillips (next to the Great Western Arcade), finally slowed down outside Selfridges again. I'm not surprised he was knackered. Also, most of the events appear to take place within the same few streets in Digbeth where all the graffiti art is. Very edgy!
This City is Ours - same arguments about locations but in Liverpool.

Sweetpea333 · 11/03/2026 22:12

Huge houses but when a couple have a fight he sleeps on the sofa!

CrochetBug · 11/03/2026 22:12

When you see someone knitting, but when they produce the finished item. It's crocheted. Or vice versa.

BitterTits · 11/03/2026 22:13

I'm watching Gone. Mr Polly has just said in assembly that it's a difficult end of term, with exams, university interviews and rugby. The uni interviews imply winter but the weather is clearly spring/summer. Annoying.

Theskylight · 11/03/2026 22:13

Mine is when they treat diabetics having a hypo with insulin…it’s so wrong, dangerous to let people assume it and so easy to just google. A hypo is caused by too much insulin, more insulin will kill someone!
