Bafta Best Documentary and deserved it. I'm guessing it will win the Oscar too.

Footage taken over 2022-2024 inside a Russian school as Putin brainwashes the next generation. Filmed by a teacher who is now in exile probably waiting for the novichok in his underpants.

On iPlayer.

We watched it two nights ago and my head is still full of it. Those poor children and their hamstriung teachers (except for one who is reveling in it all and the first name on his lips when asked who he would like to meet from the past is Beria, whose selection and rape of teenage girls is notorious). Enjoy would not be the right word but I think you'll be fascinated and appalled in equal measure.

This was fascinating and appalling! I am pleased that Pavel managed to escape and film all that footage

He is such a sweet guy, isn't he? I hope his Mum is being treated OK and I hope he gets to see her again one day.

I just watched it and agree, fascinating and horrific in equal measure. That history teacher was a complete piece of work - when he ‘won’ best teacher I was 😬
I hope Pavel is ok. Apparently he’s in Europe ‘somewhere’ - what a brave man.

I hope he's safe. I noticed at the Oscars they kept him stood back surrounded by the others in the team

It's a brilliant, astonishing film and he's a brilliant, astonishing man. I wonder where his bravery came from. Not his mother. So sad when she refused to let him visit on her birthday.

Imdunfer · 30/03/2026 13:18

The thing that strikes me hardest about the film is that Pavel absolutely loves Russia, and Putin is destroying it and would have a great patriot killed if he could.

Astonishingly brave film maker. What an insight into life under Putin.
A film everyone should watch when they get the chance.
I hope he makes more films, too!

Thanks for this recommendation - amazing documentary. So thought provoking. I hope that Paval is ok - he loves Russia so much.

I'm also fascinated by the town - so toxic.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 31/03/2026 22:28

Brilliant. The award was so well deserved. I hope wherever he is that Pavel can continue making films - he's very talented.
