Only seen episode one today as I studied the book for my O level English literature exams.
I can’t remember much of it, but I did feel sorry for Piggy.
One thing that annoyed me was Piggy telling Ralph his real name. We never get to know his real name in the book. Not sure why they have changed this. It is irrational, but it seemed unnecessary. I even had to check online that this was correct.

I’ve just binged this with my teen dd, bloody hell it’s harrowing 😳

Its years since I read the book but from memory it felt very true to the book, especially the slow descent into madness.

I thought the young actors were outstanding as well as the cinematography.

The overall feeling by the end was despair, the human race is doomed.

That is a bit annoying re Piggy having a name in this series but not in the book, not sure why they added that in, maybe to make Ralph more likeable.

HippoandtheScabbyBrats · 08/02/2026 21:32

I'm watching in real time. Read the book years ago.

dancingcs · 08/02/2026 21:35

I wasn’t sure if I should start this or not! Is it good?

HippoandtheScabbyBrats · 08/02/2026 21:39

It is, yes. 🙂

blanketsnuggler · 08/02/2026 21:58

I know one of the young actors in it! Well, his sister and mum really, but it's amazing to see him in it!

ageingdisgracefully · 08/02/2026 22:06

It's quite like the book, as I remember it (apart from Piggy having a name - not sure I get why he's been given one). The littluns are indeed very little.

ZookeeperSE · 08/02/2026 22:13

Watching and literally just got to this point. There is a reason he is never named! Hope they haven’t messed too much with the story because I’m liking the acting and the cinematography so far.

viques · 08/02/2026 22:13

Like many others I read the book at school as a set text and I think it was one of the first books where I became aware of how powerful written language can be, watching it today I was remembering scenes from the book although it is well over 50 years since I last read it.

This adaptation is very promising, I thought the casting was excellent, I loved the sense of the island as a place where life has evolved in peaceful harmony but the presence of the boys has immediately been disruptive and destructive. As an analogy of human behaviour generally it couldn’t be made much plainer. And knowing how the story evolves I am pretty sure the implication of how savage humans are under our veneer of civilisation will also be evident!

Tempted to binge but think I will enjoy having a few weeks of quality Sunday evening telly to relish instead.

the80sweregreat · 08/02/2026 22:16

It is a very powerful book. I can remember the start and the end the most. I need to read it again really

It is about how even in paradise boys/men can create hell.

I thought it was an excellent adaptation but it’s heavy going and heartbreaking.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 09/02/2026 07:06

I can’t bring myself to watch it as I hated the book at GCSEs. But what’s Piggy’ real name?

He says it’s Nicholas

Me neither, I read it a few years ago as I thought I should as it is one everyone goes on about. Loathed it and cannot understand the hype.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 09/02/2026 17:05

It’s a classic book much like animal farm and explores human nature. I can understand the hype, my 20yo dd hadn’t read the book but watched the series with me Ystd and said she’s still thinking about loads today.

It’s a very male focused book and really shows the damage done to boys who are not loved and do not have positive male role models. As well as the general mindless destructive nature of boys/humans.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 09/02/2026 18:28

I haven't watched it (yet) but it is my favourite book , I can pick it up , open the page and read it .
There are many harrowing paragraphs in the book , I think the fact it is on after the watershed means they will embrace these , otherwise it would just be a jolly adventure and it is anything but .

Many years ago I was talking to my DC about bullying ( Piggy was the victim ) and at one point even the Littluns laughed at him. We watched the film (1963) which was quite 'tame'

I;m planning to catch up and hang about here for Spoilers Grin

MsSmartShoes · 09/02/2026 19:46

My heart aches for the little ones. I expect it is much like boarding school - cruel and lonely.

rockstarshoes · 09/02/2026 23:21

I’ve watched it all! It’s brutal! So good though!

blanketsnuggler · 10/02/2026 15:11

@MsSmartShoes I should entirely hope no type of school is at all like that!
I thought it was very well done and a genuinely new take on the book. Not just a remake of the original film.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 10/02/2026 15:24

Sending babies (4-5yo) to boarding school is cruel and abusive 🤷‍♀️ they should be at home with their parents.

Does the book explain why the children were on the plane in the first place? Were they all army kids being flown back to England?

Not quite but it’s Cold War ish era and they’re being basically evacuated, implication is a world war possibly nuclear threat.

The book is vague on the area that the island is and the exact time and what war they were escaping from.

Ralph says his Daddy is in the Navy and when he gets leave he'll come and rescue them. So he was used to being waiting for his father and he had utmost faith in his fathers ability to do this .

Hedjwitch · 10/02/2026 18:25

Loved this book at school and can quote chunks from it 50 years on!
My favourite character was Simon. I hope this series does him justice.
" passions beat around Simon on the mountain top with awful wings"
The lad playing Piggy is superb.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2026 18:33

I always liked Simon too. He was such a tragic character.

OP posts:
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/02/2026 18:56

The saddest bit in the 1963 film was the music playing while Simon was in the water .
The books description was tragic and poignant , the build up , the dance frenzy , Simon , then the boys trying to justify what they did when they know they did wrong .

Hedjwitch · 11/02/2026 17:27

Just watched Ep 3 - Simon!
Gut wrenching stuff
