Isnt Robbie an unlikeable pillock? He still is now

I agree. When I went to see them when they came back around 2006!? All my friends were like wow what’s happened to Jason and Howard 🤣 we were all mark and Robbie lovers previously!

But that’s always been the case. Mark only ever appealed to kids because he looked so young

midwalker · 01/02/2026 10:26

The doc really solidified that Robbie is a massive knob. I was reminded of it recently when he was on Scott Mills, but I’d forgotten that he’s always been that way. Gary certainly also had massive ego and a sense of self importance in the early days, and I liked how the doc didn’t gloss that over. However Gary, unlike Robbie, grew and reflected and was able to take some responsibility. I’ve always thought it was a testament to Gary’s wife that she married and supported him through his “low ebb” years. It can’t have been easy.

Love Jason Orange. I think it’s refreshing for someone who has had that that level of fame and adoration to walk away for a completely “normal” life. He’s clearly an introvert who just didn’t suit fame.

i wonder if Robbie has ever had his ADHD formally diagnosed?

I wondered this too!

pouletvous · 01/02/2026 10:30

I think ill re-watch the Star Stories / Kevin Bishop programme

one of the funniest ever comedies

pouletvous · 01/02/2026 10:34

have always despised the sound of Mark Owen’s speaking and singing voice

He lives in the same village as my friend, according to her he isn’t a fan of being approached/ recognised.

ohsotired2022 · 01/02/2026 11:28

Binged this yesterday.
wasn’t expecting too much but really loved it.
I wasn’t that into Take That, I did think Mark Owens was the nicest back in the 90’s.
Then I really loved Robbie’s Solo Stuff.

The documentary was so interesting showing how big Gary felt he was and what a low to be dropped.
i was shocked at Lucas & Walliams taking the piss. So cruel.

I have a 16 year old son and can’t imagine him being thrown into the limelight like Mark & Robbie were as the younger members of the band.

I loved all the behind the scenes footage.
i wonder if they had all been supported in the right way if it could have been different. But also feel Gary learned a lot by the way things happened.

I thought Robbie came across as very strange in his Netflix documentary. I feel like I have heard he has been diagnosed with ADHD but maybe I’m imagining that ?

TheChosenTwo · 01/02/2026 11:38

I haven’t watched this, I was a big fan when I was about 9-12ish until they split up.
Might watch later although these things always bring out the cynical side in me!

Its weird how Jason and Howard were mostly ignored at the height of TTs fame but they were clearly the best looking! I wonder if thats because our idea of what is attractive changes over time? Mark would not be considered so attractive by today's standards I dont think. He does seem to be one of the nicest people ever.

TBF the first time I really took notice of Take That (I was in my 20s when they became big so was far too superior to be interested in teen idols) it was because my friend and I both said “phwoar who’s that” when they were on TOTP. Referring to Jason. We must have been way ahead of our time?Grin

What they achieved is remarkable. 5 northern working class boys. Outstanding.

This is a very good point.

Checkthemeaning · 01/02/2026 14:56

I do like the fact Gary & Robbie hashed everything out and forgave each other. It seems like they all healed which can only be a positive.

Hazlenuts2016 · 01/02/2026 17:47

Agreed that Jason comes out of it really well. And can't believe I don't remember him being fit!

PearPlop · 01/02/2026 19:09

Watched this and was disappointed that it was voice over rather than face to face interviews, but overall found it enjoyable. Yes, Robbie is a self absorbed person but that goes for a lot of

PrimalScreaming · 01/02/2026 19:16

I was in 2 minds whether to post on here and I've only seen one episode so far, but back in 1994 I was a TV 'Runner' working on TOTP. I was in my mid-twenties & I looked after TT in the studio when they were No.1 with Back For Good.
They were all really lovely boys. Robbie, even then, kind of set himself apart a bit from the others as I remember. But my main recollection is that they were HUGE compared to all the other bands I looked after.

When they were in the studio there had to be extra security. Security would arm link right the way across the studio to keep the TOTP audience from storming the stage! Some girls would pretend to feint so that they could be carried backstage in the hope of meeting them! It was bedlam!

One of my jobs was to take water up to the bands in between takes. You'd take a big bottle of Evian and some polystyrene cups. You always had to make sure you removed all the cups and took them away from them so they wouldn't be in shot! I collected the cups from the boys and stacked them up as I went off stage and put them on a big speaker out of shot without thinking as I would normally do. Within seconds loads of girls ran at them, grabbing them and wanting a cup that one of them had had a drink from!! It was madness!

They were great days though! Great memories!

HundredMilesAnHour · 01/02/2026 19:38

Having watched some of Gary as a judge of Xfactor I think he is really handsome and likeable. Love his Yorkshire accent and dry sense of humour. Definitely my favourite.

@blondebombsite13 Gary’s from Cheshire. His accent is definitely not Yorkshire!

I grew up near Manchester and I’m the same age group as Take That and I definitely remember Jason and Howard being very popular indeed! No idea why people are saying they weren’t. Admittedly no-one knew they could sing back then but there was a huge amount of lust over their looks and dancing skills. I remember when Jason’s brother appeared as a contestant on Blind Date and I think even Cilla was desperate to meet Jason through him. 😂

blondebombsite13 · 01/02/2026 19:39

@HundredMilesAnHoursorry, I’m not good with accents! Either way, I like his.

what an experience! I’m jealous! You could probably write a book with your experiences but imagine you had to sign a confidentiality agreement?

I feel quite vindicated, seeing Gary and Robbie now. Gary is the far better looking one. No one agreed with me when I said it in the nineties but they’re with me now! 🤣

pouletvous · 01/02/2026 20:01

I wonder what happened to Jason?

he lives a totally private life now! Remarkable to be that famous and the disappear into obscurity

i suppose he’s made a fortune off the later TT stuff

Fizbosshoes · 01/02/2026 20:01

GellerYeller · 01/02/2026 09:15

I’d like to add that I remember when Nigel launched them in their leather and pants, it looked a bit dated, almost Chippendales style. And it turned out that the gay audience wasn’t as much the key to their success as the teenage girl market.
Its unbelievable these days that 16 year olds were performing in their pants isn’t it. Or without them, in that first video with the jelly.

i have a 16 year old DS.
As i was watching episode 1, he came in and happened to see the bare bum/jelly scenes and looked quite horrified. And then I thought whether as his mum, id want him to do stuff like that, in the name of making a music video !

What they achieved is remarkable. 5 northern working class boys. Outstanding.

A theme in one of the boyband programmes was that in a lot of cases (east 17, TT, boyzone) the boys were working class and to a degree, maybe deliberately so, in that fame was their way out, and potentially the managers and agents exploited that. Im pretty sure one of East 17 has gone back to being a scaffolder, or something similar, not as a conscious choice in the way Jason Orange decided to leave fame behind, but more because they had effectively been chewed up and spat out and made barely any money

Tigresswoods · 01/02/2026 22:23

The bit I couldn’t believe was Matt Lucas & David Williams coming on stage dressed as Gary & Howard to present Robbie with his award.

So cruel & unnecessary. I don’t think we’d see that sort of behaviour today.

Upwiththisiwillnotput · 01/02/2026 22:39

I watched this yesterday, I am a fan, seen them three times and going again in June 😀 they always put on a fantastic show.
I’ve read Gary’s autobiography, he freely admits to being a bit of an arrogant twat but he also went through a lot, eating disorders etc but he does seem to have sorted himself out.
my heart belongs to Mark though ❤️

wonderstuff · 01/02/2026 22:59

@Fizbosshoes your dad sounds so lovely!

I have only watched the first two episodes, I think it’s shocking that Lucas and Walliams were so cruel and yet at the time were seen as cutting edge, and maintained such a high profile for so long. I think Lucas genuinely changed his style and distanced himself from it all, but Walliams was still creepy and getting laughs from making people uncomfortable until very recently.
