Reading tge subject i had thought about programmes that did thing because the ratings had dropped, rather than programmes that were created based on the desperate thing from the start. On those i agree with those mentioned- especially Naked Attraction!!

with the desperate to bring back yo ratings, i think i might have stopped watching (or maybe never started) most programmes before they got to tge desperate stage! But I used to absolutely love a programme called My Kitchen Rules. It started to slowly decline as it focused more on the contestants personalities, seemily keeping in the unplesant ones regardlessof the food they produced.. Got to a season where they brought back the past contestants to compete again. Not past winners - just the most controversial ones. It was awful.

That's how I read it, hence my jumping the shark explanation on page one - and you'd be correct that shows created specifically for their shock value are already desperate to begin with. Still interesting though, not that id ever watch them though.

Keith chegwin hosting a gameshow naked.

I came here to mention that, it was the opening night of channel 5 and the show was a bit of a crystal maze rip off, if I remember rightly

Does anyone remember Clive James showing the Japanses endurance tests on TV? I can't remember the name of the programme, but it was seriously weird.

I LOVED THIS

indurance

  • It involved contestants enduring cold, pain, humiliation or discomfort

I remember at lot of these old shows - Clive James, Gillian’s poo (although now this is done quite often to check your microbiome à la Zoe app), the Word was def an after-pub programme.

i also thought of the Rula Lenska milk scenario quickly!

Now it’s getting a drag artist in every ‘celebrity’ game show/competition. I’m not opposed to drag (not excited by it nor repulsed but can see why some are), it is a ‘thing’ that I’m sure programme makers do to attract different types of viewers.

Coronation Street trying to recreate the (well-deserved) Richard Hillman hype with mediocre “shocking” unrealistic storylines that dragged on for too long.
