The Marvellous Miniature Workshop

Series One starts on Monday 1st December on BBC1 at 2pm, Sarah Cox is presenting.

There was a miniature museum in Oban when I was younger, it was a lovely place and fascintating to see the things that could be made by very talented people. Sadly it is no longer. I'm hoping this programme will give me the same feelz that the treasures in the museum did.

Is anyone else planning to watch it?

There was a Ch 4 series a few years ago presented by Sandi Toksvig where miniature makers competed to furnish rooms in a dolls house each week and one was eventually the winner, is it like that?

LochAyeTheNoo · 29/11/2025 16:12

I don't know @Buxusmortus , I just saw an advert for it last night and haven't looked any more into it. I didn't see the Sandi Toksvig one.

Ah, here we are, they're recreating a library in miniature.

I loved the Sandi Toksvig programme, I have a slightly embarrassed secret fondness for things in miniature. I could definitely become a sad middle aged woman with a dolls house obsession if I let myself or had any reason to make or own a dolls house! I'm quietly looking forward to this programme.

LochAyeTheNoo · 29/11/2025 16:59

No need for embarrassment, slight or not, @BishyBarnyBee - miniatures rock! Well, maybe not quite rock but they're a lovely, gentle thing to take an interest in🤗

I'm looking forward to it. For a few years I dressed miniature dolls for collectors (even have one as part of an art instillation at a bank in the USA) so I love seeing skilled miniature makers - there's too much mass produced stuff available now and most people aren't prepared to pay what it costs to produce something unique and hand crafted.

LochAyeTheNoo · 29/11/2025 17:32

Oh wow, @SleepingisanArt , respect!

I agree, all the mass produced stuff prevents people from understanding the value of properly made things.

I'm really looking forward to this. I fell down a minature hole on Instagram a while back and can't/don't want to get out.

Purplebunnie · 29/11/2025 19:00

Oooh I hadn't seen this, I will be watching. I follow a few people on Instagram and am totally in awe of the time and effort and imagination

BishyBarnyBee · 01/12/2025 19:42

Anyone seen it? It's very gentle in a Repair Shop sort of way and has a similar structure.

We got a moving story about a building which meant a lot to an older woman, a young model maker exploring how she might interpret the building and shots of some of the making. Then the older woman came back, there was a reveal and they are clearly hoping for tears at that point.

It was quite sweet and watchable and I will definitely watch more but it didn't blow me away. Anyone else?

Buxusmortus · 01/12/2025 20:21

I just finished watching it. I enjoyed it and thought the miniaturist did an incredible job. As @BishyBarnyBee says, it has a Repair Shop sort of feel. I don't like Sara Cox as a presenter so would have preferred someone else.

What I really would have liked would have been about another half an hour watching exactly how the miniatures were made in much greater detail eg how she printed the minuscule book and newspaper pages, how the tiny handles and glasses were made and so on. The making part was really quite small but that was what I really wanted to see.

LochAyeTheNoo · 02/12/2025 10:49

That was exactly what I thought @Buxusmortus , not nearly enough making and far too much 'face' time. We obviously need the stories for the reason behind the makes but I would much rather know more about how the makes are made than spend so long on the people trying to emote.

I thought when Hannah was cutting the wood veneer it looked like a static camera filming over her shoulder. When the camera operator was there we saw her smiling down at whatever she was working on. There's certainly room for improvement in that aspect alone.

I agree about the Repair Shop vibe @BishyBarnyBee.

Bit disappointed, I wanted to see people doing their own creations not to a brief. I need to see how a toothpaste top is turned into a lampshade or plant pot, that kind of thing.

There is no winner just a different project each episode. The skill is amazing.

Fernie6491 · 03/12/2025 08:44

I'm with you on the 'too much talking' and not enough showing more about how such tiny things were made. Obviously we needed the back story, but not quite so many shots of walking around looking at the building and sitting in the park!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/12/2025 09:49

Does anybody else read “Marvellous Minature” and think “Mouse Organ”?

LochAyeTheNoo · 03/12/2025 10:10

I don't get the Mouse Organ thing @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads . Urgh, I've just googled and there were pictures of poor wee mice showing their inner organs 😥. I'm assuming that's not what you were meaning, is it the Monty Python thing?

I thought yesterday's programme was a bit more enjoyable but stand by my not enough making criticism.

I didn't but I will now! 😄

It's a Bagpuss reference, @LochAyeTheNoo ... 🐭 I hope you can google that and cleanse your mind... (mouse guts are a regular occurrence for us cat owners, though!)

LochAyeTheNoo · 03/12/2025 10:27

Thank you @Gribouille . Aw, Bagpuss 😍

Just placemarking, as it's on during the day I had missed this so will catch up on iPlayer.

NeedWineNow · 03/12/2025 22:39

As a sucker for anything made miniature or oversized I was really looking forward to this.

I agree with others that I would prefer to see more of the actual making rather than the filler bits but still enjoyed seeing the final display and marvelling over the makers talent.

LochAyeTheNoo · 04/12/2025 09:23

I fast forwarded a lot of the story side of yesterday's episode. I must admit to feeling a bit 'oh' when they said the maker was using CAD and laser cut MDF but on seeing the final make I don't know how he would have done it without that, it certainly would have taken a lot longer than a month.

The episode did bring back some happy memories of walking the dogs in an area that used to be a coal mine, where nature was taking the land back.

LochAyeTheNoo · 05/12/2025 12:29

Yesterday's episode was SO computer heavy. More than a world away from copper pans made from a penny.

BreakfastOfWaffles · 16/12/2025 13:42

Just started watching this on iPlayer. Half an hour seems quite short. I like the story part but they need another 15 mins to show more of the actual making. Very calming though!

LochAyeTheNoo · 19/12/2025 11:54

India Rose Crawford makes little films of Frog and Toad, the miniatures in there are a sight to behold. Well worth a look 🐸❤
