More Cheap TV, New this week end; Sandi Toksvig in sunny South of France.
First we had Michael Portillo who got it right. Then we had a narration by Bill Nighy, he didn't go on the journeys, they filmed it and gave him a script to read.
Now we get Sandi's pension top up.
Are there no new ideas anywhere among the Tristrams in the 'meedja'?

What would you like progs about?

Sandi Toksvig recently ruined a perfectly decent archaeology program

Her mix of smug head girl briskness and dramatic close to the surface emotions made it absolutely unwatchable. I gave up when she wept whilst caressing a piece of flint or some such. Even the experts looked embarrassed for her and were clearly suppressing eye rolls.

My heart sinks when a damn good subject is ruined by some half hearted lovey who's just there for the brass. Alan Davies once presented a show about dogs and clearly couldn't give a fuck about dogs or the show.

Canal Boat Diaries is a lovely show by a lovely chap for anyone who fancies the antidote to Toksvig.

longtompot · 30/11/2025 14:26

@SeaAndStars the canal boat diaries is another good one.

Silverbirchleaf · 30/11/2025 14:26

I’m fed up of these programmes in general, so contrived.

Griff Rhys Jones in America
Susan Calman Scotland
xyz explores Italy etc

celeb goes to said destination and ends up on a pasta making class, seeing traditional dance, learns to lasso etc.

TootsMaHoots · 30/11/2025 14:27

She’s bloody awful. I wouldn’t watch her in anything because I can’t stand anything about her.

SquareBreathing · 30/11/2025 14:36

“I gave up when she wept whilst caressing a piece of flint” @SeaAndStars

😂😂

MrsAvocet · 30/11/2025 14:39

Oh, I'd completely forgotten Canal Boat diaries but I do like that. The presenter is just a normal bloke, not a celebrity for a start and he's very ordinary - downright incompetent at times in fact - which gives it a very different feel. Plus, by the very nature of canals you get to see a different side of the places he visits. A lot of towns that you wouldn't expect to have anything particularly interesting about them have featured and I've learned quite a bit.

SeaAndStars · 30/11/2025 14:45

Other things every single 'celebrity' has done on TV -
Sheared a sheep
Donned a white onesie and puffed smoke into a bee hive
Been out on a trawler and measured lobsters
Been out on a trawler and looked at dolphins/whales
Forest bathing
Watched an artisan gin maker and mixed their own botanicals
Wild swim and beach sauna hut wearing bobble hat

SeaAndStars · 30/11/2025 14:45

@MrsAvocet He does all the music for the programme too and it's lovely.

Myblueclematis · 30/11/2025 14:50

I think Nick Knowles has recently had a series of travel shows, I swerved all of them. The TV channels just seem to send any old z-lister out on these jaunts including the famous parent and offspring duos i.e. Bradley Walsh and Barns, Alison Hammond and her son, forget his name but think it was babes.

I feel sure I would watch a travel show with Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer with or without Ted, travelling around the UK or the world.

Allseeingallknowing · 30/11/2025 14:58

I don’t like to see these wealthy celebrities going on jollies with their families for our entertainment!

CurlewKate · 30/11/2025 15:09

Mumsknot · 29/11/2025 13:52

I can’t watch anything celebrity. Celebrity race of the world, celebrity bake off. I just couldn’t care less about them. Give me real people any day!

Oh, I prefer the Celebrity versions of anything competitive. I can properly enjoy it when things go wrong without feeling bad for them.

Whatever goes wrong they still get a huge payment ! If it’s a touring holiday it’s a freebie they’re getting paid to go on, which they don’t need or deserve.

Absolutely love Paul and Bob in Gone Fishing and Ted is wonderful too. A travel programme with them would be great.

Silverbirchleaf · 30/11/2025 16:44

The only ones that seem to work were Gordon, Gino and Fred, and also the lovely Michael Palin. Also Jane Macdonalds cruise series were okay.

I know! That’s why I can watch the competitive ones without fretting about an “ordinary” person coming out with nothing. Not usually a fan of the travel ones.

TyroleanKnockabout · 30/11/2025 18:06

I know Giles is a bit of a knob but I did like (well, fancy) him on the hotels program. It’s not the same now.

itsthetea · 30/11/2025 18:15

Well I quite enjoyed it so perhaps it’s just that not all programs are made for you

I thought he was quite attractive until I saw him eat. He shovels food in like a starving dog and talks with his mouth full. Immediate ick.

Gone Fishing is one of the absolute joys of life 😊

CalzoneOnLegs · 30/11/2025 19:03

@SeaAndStars his lack of table manners are the least of his shortcomings

I'll not disagree with that.

And he lost every last marble when he used sexualised language about his three year old daughter. Ugh.

His gollywog collection is a bit offputting too…

SeaAndStars · 30/11/2025 20:56

Christ I didn't know all that about him. What a wrong 'un.

SheilaFentiman · 30/11/2025 21:14

Let’s not forget his bollocking of a copy editor who dared to amend his puerile reference to nosh/blow job. Absolute “do you know who I am” oozing from every pore.
