Heartbreaking drama set in 1970s Northern Ireland.

When young Catholic teacher Cushla falls for a married Protestant man, their secret passion ignites a dangerous love that defies the Troubles divide.

Based on the book Trespasses by Louise Kennedy

Seems to have quite good reviews.

So there really is nothing in between. Ah well, good to know thank you!

I posted earlier about this.

It was just sort of frivilous.

But for me negating.

Me too. Sweet Jesus 🥵

He is absolutely gorgeous. He could be the next James Bond. I thought he was older than 40. Oh dear, I am old enough to be his Mother. Never mind.

@TitsInAbsentia The book does give a few more details about Cushla's later life - she marries and has a family, hence her saying "I haven't been Miss Lavery for a long time". She is still in touch with Gerry who is in a long-term relationship with another man, although I think he may have moved to the UK.

Davy has a rough start to life and is in and out of trouble as a young man, although by the time he and Cushla meet again he is doing better. He had a daughter who he didn't see for a while but has started to reconnect with her.

A few years after Michael's murder Tommy participates in the 1980/81 IRA hunger strikes and dies in prison - one of the pictures in the art exhibition was of him.

Can't remember what happened to Eamon and Gina.

@SydneyCarton thank you for this! I did wonder if the painting that Davy was stood in front of was something personal to him but not sure if that was meant to be Tommy.

And thanks from me too!

They could have been shown having a cup of tea or something stronger, sketching out some of this.

Sad

@IwantToRetire I agree, it would have rounded things off a bit better and helped to show that her life wasn't completely defined by Michael's death. The way the TV series ended you got the impression she'd been pining away for him for the last 50 years, when realistically the affair was unlikely to have lasted even if he hadn't died. He wouldn't leave his wife (unless she died first) and I doubt he would have wanted more children. In a couple of years at most I think Cushla would have ended it.

Yes, good points, being realistic about the relationship.

But that is of course the added sadness in a sudden death. The wondering what might have been.

I really enjoyed the series and although I now know the story, is the book still worth a read, as in is it well written?

The Book was shortlisted for the women’s prize for fiction in 2023 and won various debut fiction prizes. The tv show reflects it faithfully.

Lola Pettigrew is just so naturally pretty isn't she

I just started watching it, a bit reluctantly as a troubles drama sounds too angst ridden for the mood I am in. Despite working with people from NI I struggled to understand the mumbled pub dialect and didn’t understand why the soldiers just did what Michael said. With an alcoholic mother as well I decided a mumbly misery fest wasn’t what I needed on a Friday night.
