A first-look trailer has been revealed for Murder Before Evensong (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/murder-before-evensong-matthew-lewis-first-look-newsupdate/), the new six-part murder mystery series based on the novel of the same name by Reverend Richard Coles.

He was in IACGMOOH - I liked him

Matthew Lewis's character Canon Daniel Clement.

Daniel is the Rector of English village Champton, who finds himself entangled in a murder case when a dead body turns up in the church.

Other cast members for the series are also seen in the trailer, including Amanda Redman as Daniel's mother Audrey, Amit Shah as DS Neil Vanloo, Adam James as Bernard De Floures and Tamzin Outhwaite as Stella Harper.

Other stars featuring in the show's cast include Meghan Treadway, Alexander Delamain, Marion Bailey, Amanda Hadingue, Francis Magee and Nina Toussaint-White.

As the police move in and the bodies start piling up, Daniel is the only one who can try and keep his fractured community together... and catch a killer."

Beyond Murder Before Evensong, Coles has written four more books in the Canon Clement series (https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/Reverend-Richard-Coles/author/B0DR7F4RHW?tag=radtim0b-21&ascsubtag=radiotimes-2323684) – 2023's A Death in the Parish, 2024's Murder at the Monastery and Murder Under the Mistletoe, and 2025's A Death on Location.

Lewis is, of course, best known for playing Neville Longbottom in the Harry Potter film series,

Murder Before Evensong
Canon Daniel Clement is Rector of Champton, where he lives alongside his widowed mother – opinionated, fearless, ever-so-slightly annoying Audrey – and his two dachshunds, Cosmo and Hilda.

When Daniel announces a plan to install a lavatory in the church, the parish is suddenly (and unexpectedly) divided: as lines are drawn, long-buried secrets come dangerously close to destroying the apparent calm of the village.

I'll watch it in the hope it's better than the book.

I usually love RR on telly but some of the sentences were so long they took up most of a page. I'm not stupid but had to look up the meanings of a few words throughout.

Does it bother you if you have to look up words? I quite like it – not if there are too many, but finding a few in a book makes me think it's expanded my vocabulary. I'm interested in whether other people find it annoying and off-putting or part of the fun of reading.

RaraRachael · 08/10/2025 23:22

Yes it does bother me if I have to break away from reading to look up the meaning of a word.

I haven't started watching yet but can't say I'm filled with hope after what some PPs have said.

I enjoyed it @RaraRachael

but most things please me

I disagree about the difficulty of getting the era right. I watched It's a Sin a few years ago. Every episode took me right back to thev1980s with the hairstyles, clothes, telephones, wallpaper. I remember thinking over and over. Yes, I remember that. In a country setting, it would be harder but not impossible.

But most of Its A Sin was set in London and based around young people dressing up to the limit in the fashions of the time. That Locale and young trendy characters are much easier to place in a time period.

In Evensong the fashions and hairstyles are also spot on - for rural England with middle age/older characters in a slightly conservative community.

All the decor, radio channels, kitchen etc is pretty much on point for such a community featuring mostly older characters in the 80s. Even the brands stocked in the boutique were exactly what I’d expect in a country town shop at that time.

Mildorado · 09/10/2025 07:49

I would agree, @C8H10N4O2 . If we look at our own clothes and decor, not all of it was purchased in 2025, and not all our styling from Vogue and Homes and Gardens!

my bar must be low, because I enjoyed it. I can’t remember much of the book.

I dud like it despite the differences from the book. I learned to differentiate between original writing and TV adaptations after one of the Dalgliesh adaptations was so different from the book and also from another version which was much more faithful to the original which had been repeated on TV only a week before the newer version. After that I decided to see all the Dalgliesh as 'Using Characters invented by PDJames'

ThreePears · 09/10/2025 17:22

I've read the book but can't remember diddly squat.😂

RaraRachael · 09/10/2025 18:29

@ThreePears I read the book but didn't really enjoy it . I listened to it on audio book and it was slightly better. I did the same with the other two. Goodness knows how they'd make the third one for TV.
It must be galling for struggling authors when books get published just because the author is famous not on the quality of the writing.
This is particularly rife in children's books sadly.

MaryGreenhill · 09/10/2025 20:20

We all loved it in our house .

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/10/2025 21:20

Tho was he that Famous before he went on celeb

I actually quite enjoyed it - much more than the book anyway.
Didn't think the Amanda Redman character was right. I'd have preferred someone like Tessa Peake Jones' Grantchester housekeeper.

C8H10N4O2 · 10/10/2025 12:41

I also thought it was OK, IMDB ratings after last week had it at 7 which is generally a decent rating.

I’m happy to give it its run and review at the end of the season.

Cue David Walliams...

I’ve spoken to other writers at events who were a bit frustrated at big names getting book deals when much better but less well known names struggle. It was the successful writers commenting on this mostly.

It must be galling to be grafting away at your cozy crime/golden era mystery type crime to find all the airtime for your genre being dominated by a TV personality making a foray into your domain with a very formulaic offering.

CarefulN0w · 10/10/2025 13:10

I must admit I also didn’t get on with the book (I returned it to Audible unfinished), but so far, the TV show has been pleasant enough.

As a struggling author, I take comfort in your words - I know exactly what you mean!

Yes, me too. I'm enjoying it, but I haven't read the book, so that might make a difference.

Yes, although I'm hoping that the Vicar will develop more as a character.

RaraRachael · 14/10/2025 16:39

Depends how much they've changed from the book - hopefully not too much.
