I had heard about this and sort of didn't listen as I thought it was Netflix.

But it isn't. Its the BBC!

"A clash that defined a country, and a continent, for a thousand years. The epic story of 1066 and the brutal battle for a kingdom. Starring James Norton and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0024pyz

Supposedly based on verified historical facts.

I am imagining a mash up of Game of Throne and Vikings.

(Haven't seen another thread but am nominating this as a binge watch thread, rather than tv pace. If available on iPlayer.)

BBC One - King & Conqueror

A clash that defined the future of a country – and a continent – for a thousand years.

But that's what I struggle with - tension. How can there be tension since we know the outcome?

They’re playing so fast and loose with historical fact, I’m not sure we do 😁.

As for bashing her head in with the crown, just stupid.

Yes, I wondered where they conjured that up from. Matricide is definitely against the Ten Commandments, thou shalt not kill and honour thy father and thy mother. I'm sure Edward was mightily pissed off with his mother at times, but that does mean he done her in himself, so violently.

Reminds me of Reign when the script writers decided that Francis was the one who killed his father the King at the tournament 😂 Errr...

Pieceofpurplesky · 26/08/2025 20:01

Have given up in episode 5. It's really boring. I usually stick with things. Really disappointing.

I understand what you're saying @Limehawkmoth and agree. I remember reading a few years ago (may have been in Norah Platt's Scottish Hazard about the Flemish immigration to Scotland) that Motte and Bailey castles developed because Normandy and Flanders are pretty flat so a raised fortification had an advantage.

After 1066 they just carried on building what they knew but took advantage of the more hilly terrain, conferring an even greater advantage.

For anyone interested McGibbon & Ross's "Domestic and Castellated Architecture of Scotland" although very old, is a great resource. I don't know if similar exists for England.

Beryl Platt.
Probably getting confused with Norah Lofts who wrote rather a good historical novel about Matilda. Sort of thing I do regularly!

They've totally compressed the time scale on this and I found it quite annoying.
And I do wish I had a pound for any historical drama that uses the phrase "We ride at dawn!" 😁

Rivalled · 26/08/2025 20:16

Dh has baulked at episode 6 onwards - I’ll soldier on though!

BG2015 · 26/08/2025 20:49

I was looking forward to this but IMDB gives it a score of 5.8 which usually means its rubbish.

Sleepness · 26/08/2025 20:53

I watched the first one, mostly from behind DP's shoulder! I know they were violent times, but do these dramas need to be quite so graphic?!

Yeah but Reign was obvious, but enjoyable, nonsense and not to be taken seriously. It was about as accurate as Braveheart (perhaps more accurate) but firmly tongue in cheek.

K&C seems to be touting itself as a serious Historical Drama. The events are well known, even in Scotland we know far more about the Norman Conquest than the English know about the Wars of Independence because it affected Scotland too.

To me it suffers from the same basic problem as Braveheart. The actual events should be dramatic enough without inventing stuff that never may or may not have happened. It's a lost opportunity and pisses me off.

@Howyoualldoworkme

Thanks, I couldn't be arsed taking 2 minutes to get up and look at the shelf. You're right it's Beryl Platt. I've read a fair bit of Norah Lofts but I don't think I've read that, I'll look it out.

I have to admit that, against my better judgement I'm a bit of a William and David I fangirl, again down to Georgette Heyer.

My mistake this time! It's by Hilda Lewis and is called Wife to the Bastard 😁

I read a rather good book when I was a child about Edgar Aetheling and his sisters, one of whom became St Margaret. I wonder if they'll crop up in this as they were rather important in the succession.

Hilda Lewis wrote a book that I loved as a child - The Ship That Flew. Boy buys a model ship in an old curiosity shop that takes him and his siblings on time travelling adventures. Very Nesbit-ish, but more modern.

Think I might have a copy somewhere, must dig it out.

I re-read that recently and still loved it.

Is anyone else struggling to keep up with the large number of characters? I feel like this needed to come with a little map, family tree and photos next to it!

Yes. I’m so confused I’ve been watching it with pictures of the cast next to me on my iPad.

I was looking forward to this but found it disappointing and quite confusing.

I agree.

Its been very disappointing.

they havent invented stuff i believe

SydneyCarton · 27/08/2025 08:10

The only thing I remember about Odo
is that he carried a mace in battle because as a member of the clergy (technically if not spiritually) he wasn’t supposed to shed blood, but apparently God was okay with him bashing people’s heads in.

That’s good, but it doesn’t make it any the less confusing. 🙈🤣

upinaballoon · 27/08/2025 10:39

I accept what posters have said about the horses being wrong and I have read the comment that in Iceland they had to use Icelandic ponies for the filming. Although they are 'wrong' I am enjoying watching those little ponies.

Tension? Well, there's always the possibility of something vile happening any minute, even if I do know that William will win in the end.
I don't know the actor who's being William so I'll look him up.

@MrsLargeEmbodied

Further down the episodes they completely make up Tostigs involvement
I can see that explaining what really happened with him would have probably taken another episode but I also feel how they decided to explain it is so obviously wrong.

If you don’t know him you haven’t watched Game of Thrones and if you like tension I can highly recommend it

Odo was given Kent for the part he played
Then lost most of it after he was found to be defrauding William

His other claim to fame is commissioning the Bayeux Tapestry

'My gold standard is The Last Kingdom, which cleverly marries historical event with swashbuckling fiction'

I haven't seen this but I do like historical dramas. Is it very gory? I like how this drama shows battle scenes without (so far, only ep 4..) no close ups of blood and guts. Even the hand scene was bearable. I'm a bit of a lightweight gore wise.

Regarding the sound I found it better on demand than watching on live telly.

same here, up to episode 3,

We enjoyed the series too.
I must admit being the fun people we are, our iPads were not far away, and we did a fair bit of ‘do you mind if a pause this for a minute, I need to know if that actually happened?’.
You can just imagine us on goggle box…
🤣

I bet you weren’t pedantic enough to print off the Monarchs from 1066 to present day though…holds head in shame.
Still it might be useful for the odd pub quiz in the future🤦🏼‍♀️
