I had heard about this and sort of didn't listen as I thought it was Netflix.

But it isn't. Its the BBC!

"A clash that defined a country, and a continent, for a thousand years. The epic story of 1066 and the brutal battle for a kingdom. Starring James Norton and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau."

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0024pyz

Supposedly based on verified historical facts.

I am imagining a mash up of Game of Throne and Vikings.

(Haven't seen another thread but am nominating this as a binge watch thread, rather than tv pace. If available on iPlayer.)

BBC One - King & Conqueror

A clash that defined the future of a country – and a continent – for a thousand years.

Notonthestairs · 21/08/2025 19:03

Looking forward to watching this. When does it start?
presumably nobody can complain about spoilers!

Notonthestairs · 21/08/2025 19:03

Sorry - you’ve included the date in the title!!.

Lovewine1975 · 21/08/2025 21:24

Looking forward to this!

Henpencil · 22/08/2025 19:44

I’m looking forward to it!

mumofoneAloneandwell · 22/08/2025 19:55

I'll have a look 👀👀

IwantToRetire · 24/08/2025 20:15

I see even before it has being shown the historians aren't happy!

Not sure the DM is a good source, but it's headline was the funniest of the many articles now doing the rounds!

(Dont read if you dont want spoilers)

Did William the Conqueror really have an Asterix moustache?

As BBC One's gore-splattered medieval drama King And Conqueror begins tonight, viewers will see the future King Harold II rip off an enemy warrior's nose with his teeth.

it is available already!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 24/08/2025 20:41

i dont want to hear criticism of James Norton though Sad

MsInterpret · 24/08/2025 21:20

Been looking forward to this but surprised how hammy the acting feels atm... also lots of exposition already - to be expected I suppose.

Persevering!

SydneyCarton · 24/08/2025 21:31

Clemence Poesy looks refreshingly unglamorous as Matilda, and I randomly think the horses look very authentic, little shaggy ponies rather than glossy steeds, but it’s not quite gelling for me yet.

MsInterpret · 24/08/2025 21:34

Yes, the muckiness is refreshing!

MsInterpret · 24/08/2025 21:36

Enjoying the atmospheric woodland and the tension on the roads. Yas, James/Harald has saved them albeit in the most horrific way ever!!!

mumofoneAloneandwell · 24/08/2025 21:39

Watching but behind

Ashamedly saying I know little about the history here so I can enjoy it without seeing it as inaccurate

Also James Norton is hot in every role that he plays, good god

AlohaRose · 24/08/2025 21:39

Is anyone else struggling to keep up with the large number of characters? I feel like this needed to come with a little map, family tree and photos next to it!

Very very hammy and a terrible script!

Gettingfitorbust · 24/08/2025 21:40

I’m finding it difficult to follow at the moment

SwedishEdith · 24/08/2025 21:42

It's making me appreciate how clever Hillary Mantel was at historical dialogue. This feels like it's explaining the history in every interaction. Will still watch though - strong cast.

AthenaWhite · 24/08/2025 21:43

I really wanted to like this but it is really, really hammy. DH is persevering but I just want to rewatch The Last Kingdom instead. Waaaaaay better though different time period.

Yes googling cast list as watching.

Juliet Stevenson good of course.

MsInterpret · 24/08/2025 21:47

"Well, I am afraid I am no longer built for this hour - good night."

That phrase is going into rotation. 🤣

Apparently filmed in Iceland, which explains the ponies! They have manes like Tina Turner and have a funny pace called a tolt.

SydneyCarton · 24/08/2025 21:55

Gosh, Matilda’s a bit feisty 😬. Edward is bonkers and his mother obviously doesn’t think he’s up to the job.

janehopper · 24/08/2025 21:57

Really want to watch this but not sure I can watch him come to a sticky end with an arrow through an eye!
