Do You Have ADHD?

Did anyone watch this?
I am very interested in this and have read about ADHD before.
I'm watching it now and towards the start of the programme the leading expert in ADHD says 'are fine in class?' if they're fine in class then it's not ADHD it's something else'.

And now I'm confused because I have read and heard about children masking in school still and just because a teacher says they're fine in school, it doesn't necessarily mean they don't have it. I've also heard about it not being obvious in some cases so it wouldn't necessarily be picked up

Did anyone else watch this?

For some reason this thread has posted twice! I don't know how that happened!

To get an ADHD diagnosis the symptoms/traits/insert chosen descriptive have to be present in 2 settings, that is usually home and school, or at least you did when we tried to have DD assessed. She is home ed though and we couldn’t evidence her in another setting so we had to give up

I haven’t watched it so don’t know the context, but as the pp said he’s probably referring to symptoms having to be present in two settings. Which for children is usually home and school. It is a bit oversimplistic the way he’s put it though as you point out. The two settings could be home and social for example; many children do mask in school settings, and some teachers don’t know what they are looking for (even today sadly).

So an inattentive quiet ADHD girl could be missed if you are looking for a hyperactive boy.

I think it would incredibly unusual for ADHD not to affect schoolwork at all though. Even hyperactive type children would likely struggle to sit and complete homework for example. The issue is more whether people notice and put together the traits if less troublesome children and put it down to other things. Easier to miss the struggling children who aren’t exhibiting behavioural issues.

Yes my child (I suspect) may have ADHD
When they did do homework she very much struggled to be honest. It wasn't fun. Or in the end just rushed it. Thankfully they actually did away with the homework so we haven't had to do it for years so haven't had to contend with that.
She is not troublesome at school so no I don't think they would pick up in stuff to be honest.

She is quite an active child who always has to be 'doing something.'

It was interesting though how the person they chose in the programme to get tested didn't end up having it. Usually in these types of programmes they get people who come out with a diagnosis in the end

She is going into high school so we'll see what happens I guess...

Define ‘fine in class’?
I have ADHD and in class I was never disruptive because I was usually away with the fairies (day dreaming). As I got older- being called on by a teacher to answer a question where I’d be mute and not answer became unacceptable. By 8 the “ah she’s just shy” doesn’t work, I then started to doodle pictures or write stories- teacher thought I was assiduously taking notes while listening. Nope still in day dreaming land just drawing it or writing what I was up to in my head. When the school sussed that out, I then switched to hiding a book inside my textbook or on my lap and would read something fun instead of paying attention in class. I was classed as ‘fine’ in class as literally each tactic lasted me a good 4-5yrs before being caught 1x. Plus teachers were more upset by the kids that would throw things or give them back talk or ask to go to the loo and then not come back to class…

Thanks that's interesting and helpful to have another experience

He literally said what I quoted in my OP

Yeah, the “define fine” was more what I would say to him.
Lots of ways to not be fine in class imho.

I only watched the start of the programme because I found it a bit patronising, but maybe that is because I have a child diagnosed with ADHD and am also a teacher so I see traits all the time. My DD's ADHD was not picked up on in primary school, but come secondary she was really struggling and in constant detention, hence going for diagnosis. I think this is where the fine in school comes in - because at primary a lot of the executive function aspects of ADHD are either done for you or are heavily scaffolded, and you do not choose where you sit (can't just sit next to a friend and chat, which is what she did when she could). In terms of ease of getting a diagnosis, it was very straight forward, but there were already family members (aunt, cousins) with a diagnosis so perhaps that helped as it is hereditary.

Depends what “ok in school” means.

I think I may have ADHD, I’ve done a very detailed online test and scored very highly. I did ok at school but reports were full of comments about me not concentrating and daydreaming out the window. I’m still like this now, I can have a conversation with someone and I’m nodding and vaguely responding and not listening.

Did it at work last week and then the person said “can you get that done” and I said yes but I have no idea what we were talking about 🤷‍♀️🙈. So I obviously won’t get whatever it is I’m supposed to do done.

i can struggle with conversations when I’m talking as I’ll be mid sentence and another thought takes over and I just start talking about the other thing mid sentence.
