Does anyone else really hate Jason in the BBC sitcom Mum? Just rewatching tonight and can't believe that Cathy has raised such a horrible, spoilt brat!

He's twattish 😭 but who isnt at some point

It was funny when he tried to tell his mum not to date and she ignored him

charabang · 27/07/2025 00:07

Hate is a bit strong 😆 Jason was selfish but he was grieving. If you look at all the characters they had their flaws but they all had their reasons for their unlikeable traits. Pauline and Derek were my favourites. She was so awful to him and such a snob but she showed kindness to his daughter and I felt for her when she returned deflated after a meeting with her ex. The whole show was beautifully written.

vincettenoir · 27/07/2025 07:20

He is more oblivious than a twat in my view. He is badly behaved in the last episode. But my impression was he will come to terms with it.

I also love Pauline and Derek. Such a beautiful, funny show. I might re-watch it again.

Conflict makes a story. If Jason immediately understood and accepted his Mum’s choices it would have made a pretty dull plot. And Jason’s wrong headed criticism was a brilliant way to highlight Cathy’s changing priorities - she rejects her role as simply Jason’s mum and wants more for herself.

Who didn’t cheer when Cathy rebelled and skipped away with the champagne?

Notonthestairs · 27/07/2025 08:45

And yes Pauline and Derek were brilliant.

InjuryMyArse · 27/07/2025 08:52

Oh, I love that show. When I first watched it, I disliked almost all of them, but I think that's the point. You see through their flaws. Jason is hurting and can't cope with change, I think.

I loved the nan and grandad. When they're complaining of being too hot, sitting in the hottest room, and she won't take her cardigan off. You'd love that, wouldn't you, you pervert! 😂

Notonthestairs · 27/07/2025 08:56

Oh I had forgotten all about the grandparents- this seems like a good excuse to rewatch it!

JoanChitty · 27/07/2025 09:00

I always felt that Jason idolised his dad so much he tried to be like him towards his mum. I got the feeling that dad was a bit of a lad, life and soul of the party but probably not the greatest husband. Jason started to show more maturity when he asked Michael for help with the new flat.
I loved Pauline and Derek too and enjoyed the interaction with Reg when they were talking about the new baby. Also Pauline’s fur collar. Reg says something like foxes are cunning creatures to which Pauline replies “not so clever now!”
It was a perfect series.

Reallybadidea · 27/07/2025 09:10

The grandparents are my absolute favourite characters in it. To start with I thought they were just more horrible people, but they're actually this brilliant little team of two against the world, who absolutely adore one another.

"I'll get you up those stairs" was one of the best lines from the entire 3 series.

the80sweregreat · 27/07/2025 10:22

Jason was just horrible , but it was mostly because his dad died and he thought he could become the man of the house I suppose. He just wasn’t mature enough to take on that role and suspicious of his mums new man.
If you like this try ‘ him and her’ by the same writer.
Not as gentle, but some similar characters.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 27/07/2025 12:06

I totally loved it there are some excellent witty one liners.
someone said on here previously about having realised Maureen and Reg are mourning the loss of their (adult) child.
Many of the characters including Jason lack social awareness and are quite self absorbed and then you add in the bereavement, the strong characters etc. I absolutely loved the Kelly pregnancy story and Michael indulging her by pretending he didn’t know. such a kind, patient character. and him pretending the presents in the boot weren’t for Cathy - as a kindness to Jason

the80sweregreat · 27/07/2025 12:34

Simon Golaszewski ( the writer) is so good at the subtle . Such as when the dad is remembering his late son and how he goes quiet, you can almost feel his grief although nobody says anything.
It is a very well written comedy / drama , you do get the impression that the dad really did dominate their lives in a big way! He is almost another character, but we don’t see him ( if that makes any sense)
Pauline is a bit of a monster , but she can occasionally show her more sensitive side, it’s just hidden most of the time.
Such well drawn characters and well acted ( especially Kelly too, that was a difficult one to get right and she did)

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/07/2025 15:21

The whole point of the series is how everyone evolves after the death ,he gets there in the end.

mismomary · 27/07/2025 15:40

Oooooh I need a rewatch of this, thanks OP

ACatCalledPuss · 27/07/2025 21:20

Ok, maybe hate is a bit strong! But my heart breaks for Michael every time Jason is mean to him. Plus, I think he is generally really thoughtless towards Cathy. I would be disappointed if my son turned out like that!

'Oh, I love that show. When I first watched it, I disliked almost all of them, but I think that's the point. You see through their flaws'

It's a slow burn, but you get to learn what makes each character tick over time. It's really well written. The will they/won't they with Kathy and Michael is so tense and goes on for so long but it's very well controlled

Yes, the grandparents 😁 'Dips??? What's DIPS???!!!'

Must watch it all again

Middlemarch123 · 27/07/2025 21:45

Brilliant show, I loved it.
Micheal’s “You melt me like butter “ had me welling up.

mismomary · 27/07/2025 22:17

Just watched five this afternoon. Hooked all over again.

Almightyboosh · 27/07/2025 22:42

I love this show too, I went to see a play last week and the actress who played Pauline in Mum was in it, she completely stole the show in the play too, she's a great actress. Love Mum and have watched it so many times, always felt more frustrated with Jason's character!

the80sweregreat · 28/07/2025 05:35

The Pauline actress is fab. She plays that part wonderfully. She often pops up in things on tv, I always refer to her as Pauline!

Stripeysockspots · 28/07/2025 05:41

If you haven't watched it, Him and Her is also fantastic. Same writer..very close to home but it does remind me of how dh and I were at uni and I still do a fringe wash!

Lottapianos · 28/07/2025 06:53

'If you haven't watched it, Him and Her is also fantastic. Same writer'

It's the same kind of slow burn, with monstrous characters that you get to understand a bit better over time. Her sister is a serious piece of work. I did enjoy it on the whole

The pair of them are such mucky disgusting pigs though! And the upstairs neighbour makes me heave 🤢

the80sweregreat · 28/07/2025 09:06

Him and her ‘is much more abrasive, but the sister is a younger Pauline !
Agree that the upstairs neighbour is a tool.
