new 4 part drama. On tue and Wed x 2 weeks

Sometimes all we want to watch is a swoon-worthy romance, and a nostalgic new BBC series sounds exactly like the kind of telly we need right now – especially if you loved One Day, Normal People and hit 2000 movie High Fidelity.

Based on the novel of the same name, Mix Tape will take viewers from 1980s Sheffield to the present day, with our leading couple connected by the power of music.

Already winning awards (Mix Tapewon the SXSW 2025 TV Spotlight Audience Award,) the four-part series has now been acquired by the BBC, ready to stream later this summer.

Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, said: "Accompanied by an absolutely cracking '80s soundtrack, Mix Tape is an enjoyable blend of nostalgia, romance and heartbreak – it really is the perfect summer treat!"

Mix Tape: Plot
The story, adapted from Jane Sanderson's novel, follows Daniel and Alison from their '80s teenage romance to the modern-day reality of their adult relationships while living on opposite sides of the world.

The synopsis reads: "In Sheffield, 1989, teenagers Daniel and Alison meet at a house party and bond over their shared love for music.

The relationship they forge that night follows them forever, and leave them wondering what could have been.

"Twenty years later, Daniel is in Sheffield, and Alison in Sydney. Despite the distance, Daniel reaches out to Alison in the hope that they might be able to rekindle that spark that once illuminated their young lives.

"The pair reconnect through a song from their shared past and explore their burning curiosity to understand if this is the love, and the life, they were meant to have."

Mix Tape: Cast
Teresa Palmer (The Clearing, The Fall Guy) and Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe, Cloud Atlas) will lead the cast as Alison and Daniel in the present day. Florence Hunt (Bridgerton, Cursed) and Rory Walton-Smith will play the young couple in the '80s.

Mix Tape: Trailer
Filmed on location in Dublin and Sydney, Mix Tape has already aired in Australia,

I gave up too, also it's MIXED tape surely?

Ah thank god I was absolutely thinking to myself it's mixed tape!!

martha4clark · 07/08/2025 16:43

It’s definitely mix tape. Did you never make one or receive one back in the 80s / 90s? I’ve still got a handful from old boyfriends and actually wish I could still play them.

purpleme12 · 07/08/2025 16:49

Yes I did make them
But I've always called it a mixed tape!

Flamingnorahs · 07/08/2025 16:51

Yeah, I called them mixed tapes too.

diddl · 07/08/2025 18:30

Call it what you will-I didn't like the adults in it!

It also seemed too contrived?

purpleme12 · 07/08/2025 18:31

I really liked it

I wish I had just read the book now as it sounds much better than this series. I liked the parts set in the 80s as the actors were good and so was the music. I really couldn't get into adult Dan or adult Alison. He was kind of the age he should have been but she wasn't and it really irritated me. I also didn't find adult Dan attractive in any way - looks or personality. If he had started messaging songs after 20 years I'd have blocked him straight away!

Hoped I would enjoy this but it’s all a bit blah and dull. Enjoying the music and the 80s bits. Thinking I might enjoy the book more? I’m a 90s kid so remember mix tapes just about! Also live in Sheffield so like the fact that a lot of it’s set there. On episode 3 so far

I'm in Dore! I actually found a mix tape from the 90s when I had a bit of a sort out earlier in the week.

They really were weren't they?

Pombear123 · 14/08/2025 15:18

I enjoyed the book and the concept. Watched episodes 1 and 2 so far and I agree with most, the flashback scenes are the best.

The most annoying bit is the way they have made Dan’s and Alison’s current spouses so clearly unlikeable. I mean, if you’re married to a music journalist and he pitches you a book idea about interviewing a long lost musician, surely you would muster up a bit more enthusiasm than “well who’s going to read that?” It’s literally his whole career!

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 16/08/2025 19:55

I called all mine "Various" and I still have them 😊.

Thunderpunt · 18/08/2025 13:04

I enjoyed it, as much for the music and the memories of making my own mix tapes (think mine said Various too 🤣) Could completely overlook the difference between the young and old actors, and I actually quite like the older Alison (agree the younger one was utterly brilliant) as she maintained that closed off persona into adulthood. Binged while on an
unexpected hospital stay - and burned through a ton of data (thanks NHS WIFI for not working!) So was perfect fodder for long boring days in bed!

I’ve just binge watched this. I loved it .
it made a change from murder and police and detective dramas.
It was such an easy watch , and It had me crying a few times too - especially the end .

So I’m only about 6 months behind ! But who is Sheila?

purpleme12 · 19/12/2025 23:13

She used to be Alison's neighbour in Sheffield
