I can't tell you what the current no. 1 is but I know every song on this programme and they can actually sing.
I think that I might have to squirt some Anais Anais on and dig out my Heather Shimmer lipstick.

You can have him if I can have the chap from Aha. Quite unfeasibly good looking he is.

Morten Harket! Unfeasibly good looking indeed, and still looking pretty good to me at 65. Sadly, I doubt if he'd be interested in a fat, grey 67 year old like me so I'll reluctantly leave him to you. Sigh...

notacooldad · 14/06/2025 23:10

We just said that in 40 years, will our children be able to sing all the lyrics of today’s songs?
I'd say yes to be fair.
I work with a groups of teen girls and they all have their favourite hits thatthey sing a long to. It's always been like this since I start work with teens in the 90's.

Morten has Parkinson’s??! Oh how sad. He is beautiful. I got his autograph when I was 12ish in a restaurant in London. He was so kind and smiley.

Yes, announced a week ago.

Lucky you on getting his autograph, I bet you were envied at the time around your school friends.

God I loved Wham!

Did you watch 'Wham at the BBC' recently? It can still be downloaded. George Michael in the Last Christmas video 😍

bestbefore · 14/06/2025 23:25

Watching it too! Brilliant, been googling how old the artists were; I think people look so different now. Some for them could be any age and Jennifer rush for example was 24 and Bonnie Tyler 34 (ish) and they look the same age!
Also know all the songs bur my ds who is 19 also loves loads of them!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/06/2025 23:29

In 1985 , I was 19 .

Paul Hardcastle "19" was No1 on my birthday .( N-n-n-n-n-nineteen-nineteen)
Bought a copy of Smash Hits to celebrate

The female singers don't have to resort to prancing around in their knickers to get noticed. Alison Moyet, Annie Lennox and Whitney Houston all have much better voices than the women who took part in this year's Eurovision.

Absolutely this.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 15/06/2025 13:38

Drooling over Bryan Ferry !

Elderflower14 · 16/06/2025 09:44

Now watching... 💕

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 16/06/2025 10:15

Oooh, I'll have to find this, I was 18 that year.

I also think today's teens will remember today's lyrics just like we did, my DD is 18 now and can sing along word perfect to masses of recent songs but also those going back many years, just like I knew the words to so many 60s and 70s songs.

Did you know Morten Harket (think that’s his name) has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease? Hope he is getting best treatment.

Sorry…it’s already been said.

This was fab! I’m getting excited now over seeing Duran Duran in Exeter in July now. I was looking forward to it anyway but am more “Eeek” now.

Also, Pet Shop Boys tickets are calling me too.

Gingercar · 16/06/2025 11:35

We saw Duran Duran recently. They were fantastic.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 16/06/2025 12:37

@DoingthefullGareth - I didn’t realise Pet Shop Boys were touring this summer, I’ve just bought tickets after seeing your post so thank you!!

VexedofVirginiaWater · 16/06/2025 12:44

I watched it too - stayed up late (for me). It was the year my first DC was born too.

Brilliant! Hope you enjoy.

V. sad about Morten Harket btw. Hope he gets the best treatment. We saw them in 2022 and they were amazing.

Mydadsbirthday · 16/06/2025 13:20

I watched this as well, absolutely loved it! I also was only about 6 but I love all the songs.

What struck me was how unstarry some of the female singers were - especially Phyllis Nelson, the Wham backing singers etc. and basic dance routines - I loved watching them!!

Spent a happy evening watching this and looking up some of the bands on Wikipedia to see how they started and what they're doing now.

Morten Harket - gorgeous man!

Go West - saw them at Rewind a couple of years ago and that chap's voice is amazing, so good live.

I saw them in 2001 on a revolving stage in the middle of the Houston rodeo arena. They weren’t happy campers 🤣

Taytocrisps · 16/06/2025 19:17

I've recorded it but haven't watched it yet. DD was here on Saturday night, which is most unlike her. So I didn't inflict all my 80s hits on her. Next Saturday night though.......

Taytocrisps · 06/07/2025 00:58

I finally sat down with a glass or two of wine and watched. Wow! Sooo many hits! I had a great old singsong the cats may not have been impressed. There were only two songs I fastforwarded - one was Strawberry Switchblade and I forget the other one. I remember SS but didn't recognise the song.

I was 13 for most of 1985 and in my first year of secondary school from January - June '85. We used to have school discos on Friday nights. My classmate's older brother was the DJ. I remember Phil Collins and Philip Bailey's 'Easy Lover'. That was a disco staple. And 'I want to know what love is' was the slow set. Remember
slow sets?

I adored Wham! but wasn't so keen on 'I'm your man'.

A special mention for Dee C. Lee's 'See the Day'. What a class song. And Bryan Ferry.

But the highlight has to be 'Boys of Summer'. That will always be THE song of summer.
