Just came across this news article. Seems a bit strange it happened in November but he's only now being suspended. Presume he's been working during that time? (I don't watch EE).

Jamie Borthwick: EastEnders star suspended over 'unacceptable' language

The BBC said his language was “entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold”.

Seems like they waited until they were sure they didn't need his character for a while, doesn't it?

Rafting2022 · 08/06/2025 06:19

What did he say?

EleanorReally · 08/06/2025 06:20

disablist i think
does seem strange that it happened in november, it is now June

I don't think it could have happened any quicker because Wynne has only just been suspended for Strictly stuff

Etheral · 08/06/2025 06:34

Actually it looks like Wynne wasn't suspended but his contract wasn't renewed.

Lambourn16 · 08/06/2025 06:48

Massive over reaction but that’s par for the course these days. Everyone desperate to be offended on behalf of others.

springbabydays · 08/06/2025 07:46

Rafting2022 · 08/06/2025 06:19

What did he say?

If you look on X it's being discussed there. Although X is limiting the visibility of the word.

I agree. I feel sorry for anyone in the public eye. It must be so stressful checking yourself constantly to make sure you're saying the right thing.

It seems there is very little margin for error, and no room for forgiveness.

EleanorReally · 08/06/2025 07:51

it says on twitter a word beginning with M

which is an appalling thing to say, stupid

AmateurNoun · 08/06/2025 08:13

Rafting2022 · 08/06/2025 06:19

What did he say?

He allegedly backstage referred to people from Blackpool using the original term for people with Down's Syndrome. The term is connected with the country of Mongolia.

On the one hand I think it's a stupid and offensive thing to say, but on the other I think that the current culture seems very unforgiving.

AmateurNoun · 08/06/2025 08:49

Also I do think it's slightly odd that some terms that are linked to disability are understandably not acceptable ( eg the term used here and the one beginning with 'r') but others which were used around the same period and have similar origins are seen as totally fine - e.g. 'idiot', 'imbecile', 'moron' and 'cretin'.

I'm not trying to excuse what he said, it's more that I find the standards rather puzzling.

EleanorReally · 08/06/2025 08:57

i dont think cretin is acceptable?

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 08/06/2025 09:09

How interesting that although this happened in November, he’s only paying the price now, after the Strictly tour has finished. It’s almost as if they couldn’t afford any more bad publicity, and knew the tour would already be struggling because of Wynne’s behaviour and the fact that the winner of the show wouldn’t be on the tour 🤔

That's what my biology teacher used to call us in the 80s!

threesocksmorgan · 08/06/2025 09:22

strange that he, the opera guy and gregg were kept on so long. yet jermaine was booted straight away.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 08/06/2025 09:46

My dd is autistic, and my mind immediately went to the 'r' word, and I was happy he was suspended.

The 'm' term is offensive but also i feel like its classist tbh, these terms about an area are always aimed at the working class communities 😒

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 08/06/2025 09:48

'Cretin' is one I've heard used frequently and casually, didnt realise its connotations

LateForMyOwnFuneral · 08/06/2025 10:27

He used the word "mongoloid" and in his apology, claimed he did not realise its associations.
I have at least one student per term use the word "mong" as an insult and I educate them as to why it is offensive. Same if I hear them use retard - I explain retarder/en retard in French means delayed and they are actually calling someone slow. They also now know how Scope rebranded because the word spastic was used as a slur.
Many kids are open to etymology and are Blush when they realise what they have said. They hear the words in the playground and repeat them. They don't always realise they are offending those with or those who know children with Down's syndrome or cerebral palsy until it is pointed out to them.
Many do not use such slurs again, once they know it is derogatory.
Downy is a new slur recently - this is not being used by students defining themselves like Aspie occasionally is, it is being used by others about others. Education is key.
Jamie may not have realised - now he does.
He will now be used by educators as an example of someone who was ignorant (same as Beyonce/Lizzie for using the term "spazz out") so that young people might act as upstanders in the future rather than bystanders as more call out such language.
I heard "gay" used pejoratively last week (was intense in Ali G period, had hoped it had died out by now) - told them one of my kids was gay and I didn't appreciate it being used as an adjective for saying something was lame. They apologised. End.

Cancel culture is deemed by some to be too reactive, we're easily offended etc but if you are in the public eye, you are a role model. Do better.
Jamie would have known he was saying something insulting, put it that way.

The timing of all this is suss though. Looking back at the new, shiny, "we're all safer now" Strictly vibe of that last series - and at least two cast members' "bantz" was offensive to those who heard it [roll eyes emoji - banter is a shite term, reeking of Boys will be boys excuses].
They kept all under wraps during the duration, despite the furore about Wynn's hand on Katya.

Then after the show, the furore over Wynn saying "spitroast" to Jamie when Janette was between them at a photoshoot, and now this story.
Glitterball producers must have their head in their hands each year.

springbabydays · 08/06/2025 14:57

I think that's the trouble @LateForMyOwnFuneral everyone is expected to be white than white and it's just not how humans work.

Very difficult for everyone.

I understand offence being caused and taken, but I do think the punishments are way too severe personally.

So if he didn't understand what the term meant was he trying to refer to the entire population of Blackpool by a nice friendly term rather than intending to be derogatory about them? I think not, and has he apologised for trying to insult the entire population of Blackpool?

I think it's strange because of the time that's elapsed, not because of what he did (although I still think it's a harsh punishment, but it's what we've come to expect these days).

why would you have to “check yourself constantly”? Just don’t use offensive language. It’s easy!

Why is cretin not acceptable? Am I missing something?

the word he used was unacceptable but just have a quiet word with the guy - that’s enough

I knew a teacher who when I first met her years ago used the an abbreviation of a drug that caused limb disability in the 60’s I was really shocked. But all it took was someone to tell her what that word ment and that it’s possible in earshot someone may have a family member with that issue for her to stop

It's a lot harder when people are brought up with this language as the norm as you have to retrain yourself and I also admit I didn't know the meaning of it and would use it the same as knobhead just an insult without thinking deeply about the meaning. I absolutely think people should be corrected everytime but people also need to be a little understanding to the fact the unacceptability of words is constantly growing and changing and unless you spend a significant amount of time on the Internet its hard to keep up. I guarantee their is multiple words we use now that will suddenly become unacceptable in 20 years time and our grandkids will be correcting us.
