5 has confirmed the transmission date for the much-anticipated cosy crime whodunit, Murder Most Puzzling, which used to be called The Puzzle Lady.

Murder Most Puzzling is a three-part series that starts in the UK on Thursday 19 June 2025 at 8pm on 5 (formerly called Channel 5), with episodes running weekly at the same time

Based on the best-selling books by American author Parnell Hall, the three-part series stars Phyllis Logan as Cora Felton, the Puzzle Lady.

After the body of a teenage girl is found in the local cemetery with an enigmatic clue in her pocket, Bakerbury DCI Hooper seeks help from the town’s newest, and most famous resident – Cora Felton, aka ‘The Puzzle Lady’

Cora’s ‘shoot first, ask questions never’ approach proves a perfect way to outwit the murderers, conmen and corrupt officials that stand in her way and show that – despite hiding a secret that would ruin her and those around her – she has a remarkable talent for solving murders.

And, as it turns out, Bakerbury isn’t as sleepy as it looks…

The three-parter is led by Downton Abbey star Phyllis Logan as Cora Felton, a woman who earns a living from her nationally syndicated crossword puzzle column but has secrets to hide.

The series sees Cora, who recently moved to the sleepy English town of Bakerbury, asked to help the local police with a strange murder where a crossword puzzle is left on the body. But Cora isn’t who she says she is, and soon gathers allies and enemies in equal measure.

Yes good to have an easy watch midweek

I didn't like it, she's no Miss Marple !

mum2jakie · 21/06/2025 18:53

I enjoyed it. Definitely has potential. Not sure that it needed the F word so much - the programme would have been better family viewing without it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/06/2025 22:51

I didn’t even notice the F word 🙀😳

I’ve only watched the first 30 mins, didn’t notice tbe F word. Seems like a poor attempt at capitalising on Ludwig’s success and acting generally isn’t that great. One to watch while doing something else I think (for me flicking through recipe books). However I do love that they have an older lady character with some bad habits rather than a dear little old lady like Miss Marple.

butterpuffed · 23/06/2025 09:08

I was quite surprised when Puzzle lady used the F word , as the series is quite gentle and along the lines of Poirot, Midsomer Murders etc., so it was unexpected !

threesocksmorgan · 23/06/2025 09:15

I enjoyed it, but the niece annoyed me as she reminds me of someone and I can't think who.

Yes, me too. The niece annoyed me as well.

Umanresources · 23/06/2025 11:52

I quite enjoyed it, but it's no Midsomer or Marple. Didn't notice the 'F' word particularly. As I'm a crossword fan I thought there might be more made of that, but it's early days yet. I'm also a scroller if something doesn't really grip me, or hasn't got subtitles. I'm going to stick with it, but maybe download it to watch afterwards so that there are fewer/no ads.
I enjoy programmes with guest stars, trying to remember what else they have appeared in.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/06/2025 14:59

When did she say the F word. I. What context

Second half. There was even a warning after the ad break. It was used a few times by both the puzzle lady and her niece. I noticed it because I was watching with kids in the room.

Niece reminded me of a young Anna Friel!

Fransgran · 23/06/2025 20:04

I was sure I was going to enjoy this but gave up after less than an hour. Also deleted the series link.

No, not engaging at all. This was the *second disappointing programme in a month also with a very good actor in the lead role, that has previously been well known for being in quality productions…until their current offering.
*(Timothy Spall in Death Valley)

I offer ‘Mrs Sidhu Investigates’ instead, which had much better characterisation and wittier dialogue.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/06/2025 20:55

I hope Mrs S has a 2nd series

Going to watch now

butterpuffed · 27/06/2025 16:02

Although last night's was better than the first one, it doesn't need a 2 hour slot , started to lose interest towards the end .

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/06/2025 21:00

I do find a lot of 2hr things means I lost interest

be better to show over 6w

It’s dragging a little for me. My OH came in ten minutes before the end and said, “Who’s that?” I couldn’t remember who they were, as they were revealed to be the murderer. Not really invested in it, but it’s harmless enough!

RainbowSlimeLab · 29/06/2025 17:06

I’d not heard of it before this thread but have now watched both episodes. I’m enjoying it but the name is rather an anomaly. I’m surprised she was outed as not being the ‘Puzzle Lady’ so soon and now that cat OS out of the bag puzzles aren’t coming in to it at all. I wonder if they’re more prominent in the books?

diddl · 29/06/2025 21:07

I couldn't get into that at all!

mum2jakie · 29/06/2025 22:24

The puzzle element is barely present. I didn't realise it was based on a book series so just looked them up and the books are set in America? Has anyone read any of the books to compare?

diddl · 30/06/2025 07:45

Yes!

I thought she was going to use her knowledge of puzzles-although that was Ludwig wasn't it?
