Anyone on here who can’t watch this because they loved the original Anne of Green Gables firms so much?

Here. Yup.

AnotherEmily · 03/06/2025 20:07

Yes!

GetDressedYouMerryGentlemen · 03/06/2025 20:07

l started watching it ages ago - the first 5 minutes was fine then the script writer obviously dropped the book in the bath and had to improvise so I stopped watching.

RampantIvy · 03/06/2025 20:10

I read the book so long ago that I can't remember most of the stories, so I loved watching it.

verityveritas · 03/06/2025 20:11

i’m really enjoying it. I loved the book, the original screen adaptation and the radio play!

verityveritas · 03/06/2025 20:17

Should add I only read the first book, and it was a looooooong time ago!

Jennywren8 · 03/06/2025 21:37

Oh I loved it so much, Anne was such a good role model when I was young and watched it and Gilbert was the perfect suitor. I read all the books many times and then moved on to LM Montgomery’s Emily of New Moon which I perhaps liked just as much. I want to show my girls the original series but only have them on dvd and tv doesn’t work with dvds any more ☹️

Assuming you mean the Megan Fellows version I believe it's available through Amazon Prime.

MaryTheTurtle · 03/06/2025 22:06

I liked the theme tune but I’m too in love with Gilbert to have anyone else play him. Jonathan Crombie was amazing

PrincessSoles · 04/06/2025 16:13

Watching the Megan Follows version with 16yr old DD who has watched Anne with an E. To my surprise she is loving the original which is lovely as I was around her age when it first came out. We were both crying when Matthew died 😢.

Have the DVD from a few years ago and still have DVD player hooked up to our TV. In fact DD had a portable DVD player for Xmas as she's quite old school and loves buying lots of 90s films from charity shops. She always says that she wants to live in a 90s romcom house when she grows up 😀.

MyOtherProfile · 04/06/2025 16:15

Nope. I loved the books as a child, read them all again a year or two ago and still love Anne with an E. I know they were very loose with the story but I thought they captured Anne and the setting at the time very well.

Memorable · 04/06/2025 16:20

I’ve watched it a while ago. I enjoyed it but her endless optimism grated a bit (probably missed the point 🤣).

The thing I liked most of all were the opening credits which are a work of art in themselves. I think they do actually feature an artists work

HarperStern · 04/06/2025 17:26

I absolutely loved Amybeth McNulty as Anne, I thought she captured her mix of dreaminess, hopefulness and vulnerability so well.

This. I did love the character development of Marilla though.

Yes same!

I watched a couple of episodes and then gave up. It was so promising - Anne really came across as a neglected, traumatised child. Then there was a late night gallop to save her, a fire and something else which made me feel they were trying to cram in far too much drama where it wasn't needed.

Jonathan Crombie as Gilbert - no one has ever quite lived up to him!

Mumofmarauders · 05/06/2025 07:35

I’m just the same. My mum keeps recommending Anne with an E and I just feel as though perfection was reached with lovely Megan Follows and that lovely, faithful adaptation (let’s not talk about the final sequel 😬) in the 80s, which my sister and I grew up adoring. My ten year old (ginger) DD likes it too!
My all time favourite LM Montgomery novel now I’m an adult is the Blue Castle, just in case anyone hasn’t read it. Nobody I’ve spoken to who has read it hasn’t loved it!

I loved both versions.
mom and I got the dvds when the library was selling them off. We watched 1 a week.

@Jennywren8 you can get a dvd player for around £20 that plugs in via hdmi. Worth it to watch them!

Thanks for the recommendation! Blue Castle is currently 73p on kindle so I’ve downloaded it. Looking forward to reading it.

Anne with an E… haven’t watched yet and reading this thread makes me feel unsure!

I am still traumatised by Matthew dying!

The Blue Castle is one of my absolute favourites - a thoroughly satisfying book. Have a look on Project Gutenberg - you can download most of LM Montgomery's work for free as they are firmly out of copyright. I am also very fond of Jane of Lantern Hill. The short stories are often pretty predictable but usually lovely!

I did try to reread the first Emily book recently but couldn't bear her, but she isn't as bad as Pat of Silver Bush...

Teacup40 · 05/06/2025 20:11

I gave it a good go but it doesn't come close. Watched it with dd who wasn't keen either so I will be watching the original with her when I get chance.

I read The Blue Castle about a year or so ago and loved it!

I wasn't sure whether to watch Anne with an E - tried it and didn't like it at first because I loved the original and the books, but then had another go and I'm glad I stuck with it. It's a very different beast from both how I remember reading the book and the Megan Follows version.

It kind of makes me feel like I'd missed stuff in the book. I could never understand why people seemed to just automatically distrust or not like Anne before they knew her just because she was an orphan. I thought it was the "not being brought up properly" and not knowing how to say prayers that people were judging. Maybe I'm just a bit slow on the uptake :)

To me, the Anne of the books/original version is a generally happy, imaginative, dreamy girl who doesn't seem to be too badly affected by her past.

In Anne with an E it's just shown more obviously. The signs are there that she's been traumatised in her past - she has an invisible friend and basically lives in her imagination, she barely goes to school, she's treated like a servant or a nanny to the other children in the household she's in. She's probably seen violence and anger - definitely has seen more than a young child should. The "nice" people know that all this goes on but they want to make it go away by just ignoring it. There's a collective guilt and unease about that (and even Marilla and Matthew originally wanted a boy to help work on the farm, not a son to be part of the family).

That's just my thoughts on it though.
