I like to have a couple of things lined up to watch but seem to be running out of ideas. On the whole I don't like anything very violent or gruesome or reality TV.

Just suggestions please for things available on BBCiPlayer, ITV, Channel 4 and 5, not Netflix or other subscription services.

Things I have enjoyed include:

Shetland
Vera
Midsomer Murders!
Line of Duty
The One That Got Away
Frost
Cracker
The Split
Strike
Moonflower Murders
Wolf Hall
High Country
Suits!
Wisting
Pilgrimage
Father Brown!
Miranda
The Good Life
The Jetty
Morse
Luther
Silent Witness!
Call The Midwife!
Motherland
Am I Being Unreasonable?
Escape to the Country!
The A Word
Ghosts
Uncanny!
The Mirror and the Light
Miss Austen
Amandaland
Doc Martin!
Endeavour

The ones with exclamation marks are the guilty pleasures I realise are a bit naff or have become a bit naff!

Ones I stopped watching pretty quickly on the too violent or gruesome front include Rebus and Happy Valley.

TIA

Miss Fisher murder mysteries. I think they're on U.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/05/2025 19:03

Death in Paradise
Beyond Paradise
Return to Paradise
Marlow Murder Club
Thursday Murder Club (coming soon, not sure which channel)
The Detectorists - not crime
Grantchester (I've only seen a few of these while staying with my Mum but they sound like they might fit the bill)
Poirot, David Suchet
If you can find them, the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes adaptations from decades ago
Magpie Murders and its sequel Moonflower Murders

If you can see the Talking Pictures channel, it has loads and loads of really old TV series which we have been enjoying. The quality is variable but I would recommend Public Eye and Maigret. Van der Valk too, which is probably on YouTube. I prefer the original ones from the 1970s but the 1990s series are OK.

TheHillsIsLonely · 04/05/2025 19:14

I hadn't heard of U, GentlemanJack. Will look into that, thanks.

I enjoyed Poirot with David Suchet and Magpie Murders/Moonflower Murders, Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g. I enjoyed The Thursday Murder Club books but unfortunately I think it is going to be a film on Netflix? I hadn't heard of the Talking Pictures channel so will look into that and thanks very much for the other suggestions.

I just watch the free to view channels and mainly on my laptop for practical reasons rather than on the TV.

I've just checked whether Talking Pictures is available via Freeview on the TV locally and it doesn't seem to be.

Monk. The Residence. Just started High Potential on Disney and loving it. What’s that one set in Manchester with Suranne Jones? I liked that.
Last Tango In Halifax
The one with James Norton set in Cornwall.

Channel 82 on Freeview in London, if that helps. There is some way of catching up with it online but I've not investigated that.

The Chelsea Detective, it's on U.

FloraBotticelli · 04/05/2025 19:52

‘Mum’ on iPlayer is excellent

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 04/05/2025 19:54

Just wading through Lynley. Never fails.
Before that… New Tricks. Dated now but the series with Amanda Redman and Alun Armstrong are brilliant.

Monarch of the Glen is on iPlayer too - it’s years old now so you might have seen it. Julian Fellows but set in Scotland, not Downton

He's known as Inspector Lovely in this house!

Hate hate hate the Countess! 😂

Icouldntclimbthelamppost · 04/05/2025 19:57

If you like Father Brown look for the Sister Boniface Mysteries on U. It's a spin off series. He pops up now and again.

Peggy and Uricon - I was completely aghast at the replacement character! I won't say which one though in case it spoils it for anyone.

Personality transplant to the power of a zillion, IMHO!

Yes, Scott and Bailey! It was great. McDonald and Dodds was good too.
Strike, but hands off Tom Burke please.
The Bay
The Tower
The Loch
Hidden
Hinterland
Inspector George Gently

If you're fine with subtitles/dubbing, have a look at the Walter Presents selection on Channel 4. Some great ones in there that I have really enjoyed. Mostly crime though not all.

I am watching Whitstable Pearl at the moment - Kerry Godliman as a restaurant owner who used to be a police officer and has a sideline as a private detective, and ends up working with the police on various cases.
