I was late coming to this. Didn’t watch it in 2017 - possibly as had just given birth to mini blondes

but finally got into it maybe 2yrs ago and watched it

so s6 is back and last series ever. How will this end

I know it’s around for those who binge tho this is weekly paced

The only thing worse than waiting two and a half years for the sixth and final season of The Handmaid's Tale (https://url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/kOwOCLPWOHVV3MLTBfVcyyDSV?domain=radiotimes.com/)
is waiting to escape Gilead itself.

Over five seasons, the woman formerly known as Offred escaped and infiltrated Gilead more times than the fruit have been blessed.

It all comes down to this now, the final season (although a sequel series called The Testaments is also in the works). Still, it's safe to say that The Handmaid's Tale will bring an explosive, probably harrowing end to this story of a gender scorned.

But to enjoy it fully, you'll need to remember what happened previously. That's where we come in.

Join us as we lift the veil and journey back to season 5 of The Handmaid's Tale, just when the walls of Gilead had begun to crumble.

The Handmaid's Tale recap
Five seasons ago, The Handmaid's Tale began with June and her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) trying to escape Gilead with their daughter, Hannah.

As fans probably remember, they failed to get away, which led to June's servitude and her daughter being taken away to be raised by strangers.

After many failed rescue attempts, June learned in season 5 that (a still very young) Hannah — or Agnes, as she's known in Gilead — was being fast-tracked into a Gilead marriage.

Season 5 ends with Hannah still trapped there, so expect her rescue to play heavily on June's mind in the final 10 episodes of season 6.

It's also worth noting that June has already escaped to Canada by this point, reunited with Luke, her bestie Moira (Samira Wiley), and Nichole, her other daughter she gave birth to in Gilead. You know, the one her father, a Gilead officer named Nick (Max Minghella), helped smuggle out.

June isn't the only one popping out babies in this dystopian future. Her former owner, for want of a better word, named Serena Joy, also brought a bundle of joy into the world when her son Noah was born. June actually helped Serena give birth in No Man's Land, but she was later separated from Noah in Canada when she was thrown into a detention centre.

Towards the end of the season, Serena (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-handmaids-tale-serena-wharton-newsupdate/)
was reunited with her son, though, and managed to escape with him.

Things have been rocky for June too, even after she escaped literal hell on earth. With anti-refugee sentiment rising and Gilead gaining popularity outside of its borders, Canada isn't as safe as it once was for everyone's favourite former handmaid.

Following an attack at a memorial service, June was targeted again when a truck sporting a Gilead bumper sticker ran her over, in front of her own home, no less.

Being the dutiful husband he is, Luke rushes out to save her, but he gets a bit carried away and accidentally kills June's attacker in the process.

You'd think the police would have given him a medal for that, but no, they instead issue a warrant for his arrest. The pair make a run for it, planning to escape Canada via a train that's transporting refugees out west to Alaska.

Their plan hits a slight snag, however, when they see officers checking documents at the station.

Luke nobly offers himself up to the police so June and Nichole escape in the chaos that ensues. Men aren't exactly known for doing the right thing in this show, but June's husband has usually been the one exception to that rule.

On board the train, June grapples with what's just occurred, realising that she must now save Luke as well as Hannah. But her thoughts are interrupted when she hears another baby cry...

Yep, after everything they've been through, Serena and her son Noah made it onto the same train as June, presumably under false pretences. The two women kind of smile at each other, shocked by this surreal twist of fate.

"You got a diaper?” asks Serena. June doesn't answer because the final season credits roll then, but it's safe to say that there's a s**t-storm gathering in store for them both at the end of this train journey, or even earlier for that matter.

The same is also true of Gilead, where Janine (Madeline Brewer) suffers as a handmaid for Commander Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Naomi Putnam (Ever Carradine), who are due to get married.

In the face of abuse, Janine fights back, which leads to the Eyes taking her away. Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), who's always had a soft spot for Janine, isn't best pleased by this development, sowing the seeds for not just this final season but also the sequel show, The Testaments. If you know, you know…

Meanwhile, good old reliable (and boring) Nick has agreed to secretly with the US government in exchange for June's safety. But when he becomes convinced that Commander Lawrence is the one behind the attacks on her, he storms Joseph's wedding reception and hits him.

While in prison, his pregnant wife leaves Nick, rightly convinced that he's still in love with June.

So, with all that said and done, how will this impact the sixth and final season? Episode 1 is simply titled Train, so it should come as no stretch to the imagination that the season 6 premiere will pick up where the previous season left off.

What's not clear is where June and Serena now stand. Can they work together as friends? Or will one inevitably betray the other before reaching their final destination?

June and Serena's relationship is complicated at the best of times, so instead of making more impossible guesses, we'll leave you with the official logline for season 6 of The Handmaid's Tale to look for more clues.

"June’s unyielding spirit and determination pull her back into the fight to take down Gilead. Luke and Moira join the resistance. Serena tries to reform Gilead while Commander Lawrence and Aunt Lydia reckon with what they wrought, and Nick faces challenging tests of character.

"This final chapter of June’s journey highlights the importance of hope, courage, solidarity and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom."

Elisabeth Moss as June holding Nichole and smiling at the camera while sat on a train full of people.

This is my favourite show ever and that episode didn’t disappoint. I love the interactions between June and Serena. I also like Moira, her best line being ‘blessed be the fruit loop’.

My next door neighbour looks exactly Luke and is called Luke!

Nick looked hot, I definitely would.

hannahbanana2007 · 04/05/2025 22:27

I thought this was a great episode and so happy it’s back on again BUT… if June’s mum was alive how could she not have known that June had survived Gilead and was back with Luke? It seems a bit of a plot hole that she wouldn’t have got in touch with her considering how much of a figure head of the rebellion June had become? Unless I’m missing something?

I agree, surely she'd have tried to find out what happened to June.

Omg. Just watched it. Big gaspy shout at the end.

That wasn’t Moiras line - it was the blonde, non verbal woman that lived with them when they were new refugees. Still a great line though!

But who’s to say she didn’t know? It could be that she’s just been waiting/looking out for June. In the scene where we first see her, she’s reading down a long list of names - perhaps every time they get new refugees, she scans the list to see if June is on the list?

For me, the question is how did she escape from the colonies? And she’s now in Alaska, which isn’t part of Gilead.

Philandbill · 05/05/2025 08:25

viques · 03/05/2025 22:02

I am pretty sure she was watching a film about the colonies and spotted her mum there, looking v poorly.

That was definitely the case in the book and I thought so in the first series too.

Pabbel · 29/04/2025 06:41

Blessed day, just rewatching the whole series again , up to mid of series 3, cant wait for series 6.

Oh my word @Pabbel
I found it so harrowing there is no way I could rewatch the whole series.
I forced myself to watch some episodes.

We are a few episodes ahead of the UK but I love reading all the comments on these threads. My family and friends haven’t watched it so I can’t discuss it with them.

I don’t understand Nick staying in Gilead. He has the power to leave.
And I can’t figure out Commander Lawrence.BlushBlushBlush
Is he a “goodie” or a true “baddie” or just a mixture of the two ?

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 05/05/2025 08:33

@deeahgwitch that's how I feel about Commander Lawrence, he helped June escape Gilead, he also treated his handmaid's well and didn't rape them, but he's still part of it all. His wife was also very much not part of the women of Gilead.

I think him and Nick are very similar.

deeahgwitch · 05/05/2025 09:13

Thank you @XxSideshowAuntSallyx- glad I’m not alone in my thinking.

Philandbill · 05/05/2025 09:52

@XxSideshowAuntSallyx I think that Lawrence realises how utterly corrupt and terrible Gilead is but he is also aware that he is completely complicit in it's formation and is a war criminal in international eyes and would be tried as such. If any one is interested then the BBC radio 4 did a really good docu drama about Nuremberg and the drafting of war crimes / crimes against humanity etc. which I think is still on Sounds. Very accessible and thought provoking.

CruCru · 05/05/2025 10:42

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 04/05/2025 10:14

Does Nick actually believe in Gilead? Same with Commander Lawrence?

I always get the feeling that they're playing along with it all but underneath they really don't believe in it.

I've not read the book (I might actually do that over the summer) so not sure if it's ever been explained.

I think Nick just rather fell into being a driver / commander for Gilead - he was in and out of work before and then found this was more stable and profitable.

I suspect that Gilead (or, at least the Colonies, which Lawrence came up with) were a thought experiment. Joseph Lawrence hadn’t reckoned on it actually happening. Then he couldn’t get away because he was a war criminal.

CruCru · 05/05/2025 10:47

Holly is / was a doctor. Once people found that out in the Colonies, it may have made sense to put her to use elsewhere - in the same way that the handmaids were sent back to Gilead in season 2 because so many of them had been blown up.

I expect that whenever she is given a list of refugees, she scans it to see if there’s anyone she knows.

dapsnotplimsolls · 05/05/2025 11:09

I think Nick was involved in the attack on institutions when Gilead began and there was talk of him being prosecuted for war crimes in an earlier series. He could probably do a deal now but won't leave because Rose is pregnant.

Wasn't blessed be the fruit loops the girl they lived with in Canada. She was too traumatised to speak and then suddenly came out with that Gem. My fave line from Moira is 'Praise be bitch' from series 1. Moira got June the package from Jezebel's with all the letters and put a note in it with that line. A friend got me a tote bag made with that line on it. My fave Moira moment is when she kills the commander to escape Jezebel's.

Do you mean Gilead would put her to use? If so doubt it as they killed many doctors especially those involved in abortion.

BIWI · 05/05/2025 13:45

She must have escaped Gilead somehow, as she’s in Alaska. No doubt that will be part of the story in this series.

CurbsideProphet · 05/05/2025 13:56

I've just caught up and cried at the end seeing Holly and June. I first read The Handmaid's Tale 15 years ago, so to see June reunited with her mother now that I'm a mother myself.... I presume MayDay will have helped her. MayDay are across Gilead and have always moved useful people around to better their cause. A doctor will have been high up the list of women to rescue from the colonies.

Great to see Moira again. I'm expecting now she will join the resistance.

Yes of course you are right! She said it to Moira.

PersonIrresponsible · 05/05/2025 20:37

My theory re June's mum's Schroedinger's existence:

Maybe she had to change her name to survive so wouldn't or couldn't contact June because of some perceived high risk to her life.

Or it's just a tremendously bad plot hole.

CurbsideProphet · 05/05/2025 21:24

I've been thinking about Holly and Alaska today. Alaska is very out on its own and it must be a hard existence to live there at the best of times. Unless someone turned up at that refugee camp and said "there's this very brave woman called June Osborne trying to save us all", I'm not fully convinced that Holly could have known that June had survived. They're working off a paper list of names. They must have limited communication coming in from outside.

mizu · 05/05/2025 21:39

finished rewatching this afternoon and thought about saving season 6 til a few episodes are out but couldn’t. Roll on next Saturday.

newtlover · 05/05/2025 22:31

just watched it now
how on earth will Serena survive, she has no resources or skills....maybe a slow death?

Iggi999 · 05/05/2025 23:40

I found it interesting that June didn't seem to be "known" by anyone on the train, she isn't famous to everyone. I'd thought Serena had really moved on, but the stuff she was spouting made her still sound like a true believer. I'd like to think the other women wouldn't have hurt the baby but I think they would have, to punish her.
Would be fitting if she'd met the same fate as her husband.
