I was late coming to this. Didn’t watch it in 2017 - possibly as had just given birth to mini blondes

but finally got into it maybe 2yrs ago and watched it

so s6 is back and last series ever. How will this end

I know it’s around for those who binge tho this is weekly paced

The only thing worse than waiting two and a half years for the sixth and final season of The Handmaid's Tale (https://url.uk.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/kOwOCLPWOHVV3MLTBfVcyyDSV?domain=radiotimes.com/)
is waiting to escape Gilead itself.

Over five seasons, the woman formerly known as Offred escaped and infiltrated Gilead more times than the fruit have been blessed.

It all comes down to this now, the final season (although a sequel series called The Testaments is also in the works). Still, it's safe to say that The Handmaid's Tale will bring an explosive, probably harrowing end to this story of a gender scorned.

But to enjoy it fully, you'll need to remember what happened previously. That's where we come in.

Join us as we lift the veil and journey back to season 5 of The Handmaid's Tale, just when the walls of Gilead had begun to crumble.

The Handmaid's Tale recap
Five seasons ago, The Handmaid's Tale began with June and her husband Luke (O-T Fagbenle) trying to escape Gilead with their daughter, Hannah.

As fans probably remember, they failed to get away, which led to June's servitude and her daughter being taken away to be raised by strangers.

After many failed rescue attempts, June learned in season 5 that (a still very young) Hannah — or Agnes, as she's known in Gilead — was being fast-tracked into a Gilead marriage.

Season 5 ends with Hannah still trapped there, so expect her rescue to play heavily on June's mind in the final 10 episodes of season 6.

It's also worth noting that June has already escaped to Canada by this point, reunited with Luke, her bestie Moira (Samira Wiley), and Nichole, her other daughter she gave birth to in Gilead. You know, the one her father, a Gilead officer named Nick (Max Minghella), helped smuggle out.

June isn't the only one popping out babies in this dystopian future. Her former owner, for want of a better word, named Serena Joy, also brought a bundle of joy into the world when her son Noah was born. June actually helped Serena give birth in No Man's Land, but she was later separated from Noah in Canada when she was thrown into a detention centre.

Towards the end of the season, Serena (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-handmaids-tale-serena-wharton-newsupdate/)
was reunited with her son, though, and managed to escape with him.

Things have been rocky for June too, even after she escaped literal hell on earth. With anti-refugee sentiment rising and Gilead gaining popularity outside of its borders, Canada isn't as safe as it once was for everyone's favourite former handmaid.

Following an attack at a memorial service, June was targeted again when a truck sporting a Gilead bumper sticker ran her over, in front of her own home, no less.

Being the dutiful husband he is, Luke rushes out to save her, but he gets a bit carried away and accidentally kills June's attacker in the process.

You'd think the police would have given him a medal for that, but no, they instead issue a warrant for his arrest. The pair make a run for it, planning to escape Canada via a train that's transporting refugees out west to Alaska.

Their plan hits a slight snag, however, when they see officers checking documents at the station.

Luke nobly offers himself up to the police so June and Nichole escape in the chaos that ensues. Men aren't exactly known for doing the right thing in this show, but June's husband has usually been the one exception to that rule.

On board the train, June grapples with what's just occurred, realising that she must now save Luke as well as Hannah. But her thoughts are interrupted when she hears another baby cry...

Yep, after everything they've been through, Serena and her son Noah made it onto the same train as June, presumably under false pretences. The two women kind of smile at each other, shocked by this surreal twist of fate.

"You got a diaper?” asks Serena. June doesn't answer because the final season credits roll then, but it's safe to say that there's a s**t-storm gathering in store for them both at the end of this train journey, or even earlier for that matter.

The same is also true of Gilead, where Janine (Madeline Brewer) suffers as a handmaid for Commander Joseph Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) and Naomi Putnam (Ever Carradine), who are due to get married.

In the face of abuse, Janine fights back, which leads to the Eyes taking her away. Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), who's always had a soft spot for Janine, isn't best pleased by this development, sowing the seeds for not just this final season but also the sequel show, The Testaments. If you know, you know…

Meanwhile, good old reliable (and boring) Nick has agreed to secretly with the US government in exchange for June's safety. But when he becomes convinced that Commander Lawrence is the one behind the attacks on her, he storms Joseph's wedding reception and hits him.

While in prison, his pregnant wife leaves Nick, rightly convinced that he's still in love with June.

So, with all that said and done, how will this impact the sixth and final season? Episode 1 is simply titled Train, so it should come as no stretch to the imagination that the season 6 premiere will pick up where the previous season left off.

What's not clear is where June and Serena now stand. Can they work together as friends? Or will one inevitably betray the other before reaching their final destination?

June and Serena's relationship is complicated at the best of times, so instead of making more impossible guesses, we'll leave you with the official logline for season 6 of The Handmaid's Tale to look for more clues.

"June’s unyielding spirit and determination pull her back into the fight to take down Gilead. Luke and Moira join the resistance. Serena tries to reform Gilead while Commander Lawrence and Aunt Lydia reckon with what they wrought, and Nick faces challenging tests of character.

"This final chapter of June’s journey highlights the importance of hope, courage, solidarity and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom."

Elisabeth Moss as June holding Nichole and smiling at the camera while sat on a train full of people.

I think Janine is my favourite character. She is versatile and has always been fiercely protective of Charlotte.

Some people have mentioned Prime but I’m not sure if there are adverts, I don’t have it. I watch it live on C4 on Sundays but I think C4 put it on their player on Saturday night

I watch it on Prime and paying £2.99 a month to have no adverts just for HMT, drove me nuts when the adverts started popping up in the first episode I watched, it's really not a programme you want that happening in.

So will pay the £2.99 for 2 months then cancel it!

BeKindOpalBear · 09/06/2025 08:30

Does anyone else listen to the podcast Eyes on Gilead?

It's awesome! I watch an episode then listen to the podcast for that very episode and then rewatch it, as the 3 women on it have such an eye for detail and so interesting to hear their perspectives!

Plus they have bonus episodes with some of the actors/film makers - fascinating..

MrsJRHartley · 09/06/2025 08:34

I used to but it hasn't felt worth that level of scrutiny for the last few seasons, sadly.

I really want Nick to have a better plan, for see off the commanders. We shall see.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 09/06/2025 12:48

Great episode! Nick needed something big to get Commander Wharton off his back but I didn’t think he’d scupper the MayDay plans. I think he really does love June. He hasn’t ever had anyone in his life who loves him. His mum left when he was young and he’s only known being an Eye. But he knows Gilead is all wrong and genuinely thought that June would leave with him to go to Paris. What he didn’t bank on was June not wanting to leave without Hannah. What’s going to happen next? Nick is meant to be taking June across the border. Will she even get in the car with him?

I don’t know what ‘closing down Jezebel’s’ actually means? What will happen to Janine and all the other women? On the wall or colonies? Can’t see them all being brought to New Bethlehem to work in the fertility clinic… unless Serena can sweet talk Wharton? But would she do that?

Serena meanwhile is off her head asking for forgiveness! And asking Rita to make her wedding cake! I know Rita doesn’t want to be part of MayDay but I think she will. Serena didn’t even notice how ironic it was that she was pouring drinks for Rita and June. She was waiting on them! They noticed straight away. Serena is also kidding herself if she thinks that Wharton isn’t going to change once they’re married. He’s a pious, religious man. He’ll want to control her every move. I wonder when she’s going to realise that? Probably too late… she’s so focused on power that she can’t see the wood for the trees.

Aunt Lydia is a silly old lady. She’s realised she’s got it all wrong and can’t control Janine any more. That’s why she hit her. Trying to get control. But it didn’t work. Sending retired Handmaids who’ve had their babies taken off them to work in a fertility clinic has go to be one of the most cruel things I’ve ever heard.

Lawrence is still an unknown… is he joining MayDay because it’s his only option to be on the right side of history?

It looks like Sarena’s wedding will be the day of the revolution! I wonder if she’ll have Hannah as a bridesmaid? Or Charlotte? I like that Lawrence is building a relationship with Charlotte. She’ll run to him rather than Mrs Putnam in times of trouble! I hope Janine gets to see Charlotte again.

The scene at the end when June was in the light and Nick was in the dark was brilliant!

UnderHisPie · 09/06/2025 13:28

Nick is a weak man. We have been shown that right from the beginning when he gets involved with the Eyes and reminded of it over and over again, imo. And his love is not a good kind of love - it's the 'on a pedestal' distance-fed kind of love. It's not a 'get up everyday and form a life together working through the tough and the dull' kind of love.

I cannot imagine Luke giving up the plot so easily - even considering his relative inexperience in the ways of Gilead.

usedtobeaylis · 09/06/2025 13:29

I'm only just starting the last series and one of the things I love about this show is all the conflicting feelings about the characters. They're all so, so flawed and I don't wholly like or dislike many of them.

I'm hoping the door is left open for a series based on The Testaments.

deeahgwitch · 09/06/2025 13:36

I am a couple of episodes ahead and I remember commenting on this thread that Episode 6 was 😮. I’m sure you realise now why I did. Nick betraying Mayday and June. I was flabbergasted. I didn’t give anything away but got given out to anyway for just saying it was a biggie.

CruCru · 09/06/2025 15:05

I would say that June doesn’t have particularly good taste in men - but she and Nick were rather thrown together, she wasn’t wandering over Gilead looking for a boyfriend.

I remember your post and it was really, really annoying that you wrote that E6 was a biggie when I had weeks to wait. It really spoilt the run up to E6 as I knew something was coming. Please don’t ever write anything like that on a ‘no spoilers thread’ again. It’s bad enough having to keep off social media to avoid the spoilers that are out there without having someone drop an ‘ooh just wait for E6’ post on a NO spoilers thread.

Daisydiary · 09/06/2025 19:30

@deeahgwitch - I wouldn’t worry about that. It hardly ruined it for anyone when there are so many ways to watch these days. Even C4 has the Sat/Sun thing going on. It’s not like you gave anything away.
@JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn - really? Christ, how overly invested in the series are you?! I very much doubt it ruined anything flat all 🙄 If someone saying that, in their opinion, a future episode of something is a biggie, but without saying why, can upset you so much, maybe this ain’t the place for you?!?

CruCru · 09/06/2025 19:38

I think I’m also irritated by the flashbacks from series 1. This is a high budget drama - once TV shows start using bloody flashbacks from scenes the viewer has already seen (like Dexter), it’s a sign they are milking the cow until it’s dead. There must have been a way of making the point without doing that.

ILoveBrum · 09/06/2025 20:06

I agree @CruCru. I used to love the pre-Gilead flashbacks as found them so scary to see how people almost slept-walked into this outcome (thinking of the bank accounts & Luke downplaying that etc) but I don’t need flashbacks of previous series.

I’d like to see more Hannah.

Agree that Nick is a weak man - he’s totally self serving & will look after himself first & foremost, which is no different to how he’s been this whole series (including flashbacks). Only saving June is when he’s not totally selfish although he doesn’t seem to be bothered by Holly at all.

Perhaps Rita can make the wedding cake with arsenic & kill off all the commanders that way!

guess that will stop june creaming her self needs him now and went hubby more

I'm with @JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn and the post from @deeahgwitch was a spoiler and really annoying. We have no interest in why you wanted to post why you thought what you did. We don’t care, it’s a no spoiler thread

ha anyone remember the poster from a few series back who got told to stop posting spoilers and sent PMs to everyone on the chat 😆. Just looked back, some people got proper spoilers. I got 'ShhhShhhh' sent to me

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/06/2025 22:27

To be fair she only said it was good or something like that. I can’t R.E.M. now

but what one person thinks is good , another May think crap

they didn’t say why good or any hints it was Nick etx

yes I would like all threads to be spoiler free if mine as title says this clearly - but nothing was revealed in this case

I’m very over invested 😜 So when I join a thread with NO SPOILERS in the title, I expect NO SPOILERS in the thread. Not a breath about anything. Nothing. At. All. HTH.

thatone · 10/06/2025 06:13

To be fair to Nick, he was only in Jezebel's for June's sake and he killed the Eye for June's sake. He had to give his FIL something big to save himself. His FIL is scary.

Well, I'm sure you meant no harm but it was a bit annoying. It's bringing a knowledge of future episodes, however vague, to a 'no spoiler' episode.

Anyway, personally I didn't find it such a shock. When l saw all the lovey dovey scenes which added nothing to the plot, to me that suggested something big was going to happen with nick. Either he gets killed or he betrays June. Since he's always been a rather ambiguous character, the latter isn't a shock. Of course, the extent to which he's betrayed her, and if he can redeem himself, remains to be seen. Or at least it does here on the 'no spoiler' thread!
