Or will I be scarred for life?!

It's currently on BBC iPlayer and the perverse side of me wants to see what all the fuss is about: it always crops up in lists of the most terrifying dramas but is it really?

DS told me not to, he is used to scary stuff but this was the stuff of nightmares

It’s boring as fuck. I was hyped up to watch it when it finally became available after years of wanting to watch it and was sorely disappointed. Not remotely scary imo!

WallaceinAnderland · 21/04/2025 19:59

Yes I think everyone should watch it.

I was told it was amazing, but I found it quite dull.

I liked it but I wasn't expecting much - it just came on tv one night and so I watched it, and had vaguely heard of it before. I really liked it, it was one of those films that you just get drawn into. The ending was disappointing/depressing but I'd say it is definitely worth watching but like anything, if your expectations are too high you are always likely to be disappointed.

It was incredibly scary at the time. I don't think it would be now. It's very dated and the context isn't there at all.

I would watch it but I wouldn't expect to find it scary if you're only coming to.it now. You should still find it very interesting, especially if you make the attempt to understand the history and how it would have been received at the time it was broadcast.

It might not bother you, but scared the life out of me I wished I’d not watched it

seashaken · 21/04/2025 20:03

I saw it when it first came out, it had quite an impact then but I rewatched it recently and it seemed a bit amateurish. I live in Sheffield so it was quite interesting seeing familiar places obliterated.

I went to watch it at a local independent cinema last year (saw it on telly years ago too). It felt rather powerful, especially some scenes where there were audible gasps from the audience.

It's very much of its time but still pretty powerful

Threads is not ‘scary’ as such, but it is unremittingly grim, like no other film I have ever seen. Forget all the usual Hollywood stuff about heroes, redemption arcs, triumph over adversity, happy endings etc etc. There is none of that. It’s about the effects of nuclear war on ordinary working class people in Sheffield. For a film which was very obviously made on a budget of around £3.49 it is frighteningly believable & real, with outstanding performances from an ensemble cast.

The scenario it depicts of a conflict in the Middle East escalating to global nuclear war remains horrifically plausible 40 years after it was made. I definitely recommend watching it, but pick your moment carefully. It’s not the sort of thing you want to sit down & watch after a bad day.

Thanks for everyone's input and opinions. I'll report back if I DO opt to watch it on Wednesday!

It's all very dated and of its time.
