I’ve watched the 6 episodes on Disney + - the whole thing is disturbing. Looking forward to how it all pans out but from reading this thread, I’m not sure there will be much resolution!

Agree. And the boys of the family were teenagers at the time, I think? So adopting a younger child may have been partly related to the family dynamics of a younger sister vs a same age sister.

No, the children were younger- their youngest was only 6 when they decided to adopt Natalia. MB even said how excited he was to have a ‘twin sister’ for him.

The documentary is on YouTube.

Ah, thanks

I am watching it, and enjoying it as something to watch in the evenings, but I find the guy who plays the dad barely watchable, I think he’s a shockingly poor actor.

I thought this until I watched the documentary and saw the real life dad. His portrayal is spot on. The guy really does overact everything.

I haven't seen the documentary, no. It appears to be an extra subscription on Prime which I was reluctant to sign up to but I may have to do I can watch it!

I can understand how it would be shocking if a child you thought was seven had pubic hair and a period even if you don't have any kind of ulterior motives.

The documentary is available in full on discovery channel. We have a login for it but I don’t think we pay a subscription for it.

I'm guessing because of her condition it was difficult even for the medical professionals to determine her age. We may never know. She may not even know.

We do know. She has since formally been re-aged back to what her birth certificate says. DNA and dental records back up her real age, along with records of her birth.

purpleme12 · 21/04/2025 14:20

So how actually is she?

purpleme12 · 21/04/2025 14:25

How old I mean

ihmysrn · 21/04/2025 14:38

purpleme12 · 21/04/2025 14:20

So how actually is she?

She was born in 2003. They found her mother and did a DNA test, the mother would have been 10 for her to be born in 1989. The age thing has long been resolved now.

purpleme12 · 21/04/2025 14:48

Ah right ok so the parents who adopted her were in the wrong

It's on my list to watch but I'm not going to have time to watch it in the immediate future

ihmysrn · 21/04/2025 15:48

The documentary is a really hard watch. MB is so uncomfortable to watch, he’s exhausting, cringeworthy and infuriating. I’m also hating how they’re showing the intimate photos of Kristine, that serves zero importance to the story; you can just mention them without showing them.

redpickle · 23/04/2025 18:12

Next episode was released today and the final one is on 30th.
Just started the documentary on Discovery+ and already have a strong sense that there’s something very wrong with Michael.

He’s a compulsive liar at the very least. They actually show clips in the documentary of him directly contradicting what he’s saying as the truth.

redpickle · 24/04/2025 11:37

My goodness, his “re-enactments” are shocking!

Natalia seems incredibly traumatised, god knows what’s she went through before all of this. Her inappropriate sexual behaviour towards ‘older men’ that one of her former neighbours mentioned in the documentary screams sexual abuse. I know her age has been re-assessed in line with her being a child but I don’t think it’s impossible that her mother could have had a child at 10/11 if there was also sexual abuse in that environment. I’m not sure that can be dismissed as impossible or used as evidence that she’s not somewhat older than claimed.

I don’t want to derail a thread about the drama by talking about the documentary but I wonder if there will be subsequent seasons as it’s such a complex case with more of the story to tell.

I don’t think the maternal age was the only consideration for changing the legal age back.

purpleme12 · 24/04/2025 13:02

What's the documentary called? And is that on Disney plus too?

redpickle · 24/04/2025 13:57

ihmysrn · 24/04/2025 12:50

I don’t think the maternal age was the only consideration for changing the legal age back.

No it wasn’t, I think it was more based on Natalia herself - bones, teeth etc but I was just struck by the fact it was considered impossible, which could be a dangerous assumption. There’s been a few horrific cases where quite young girls have become pregnant after sexual abuse. Not saying that’s the case here.

I don’t think I’ve read anyone say it was impossible, but it was unlikely, statistically speaking not many girls would have started their periods by aged 10. Not impossible, but added more for the child case than it did adult.

Pigeonqueen · 24/04/2025 16:40

I’m watching this. Such a sad and strange case! The young woman playing Natalia is a very good actor.

MrsPeterHarris · 24/04/2025 21:49

This whole case is so bizarre. Not seen the documentary but watching the episodes on Disney and keen to see how the programme finishes. Will watch the documentary afterwards.

Tourist29 · 24/04/2025 22:21

I hope it’s resolved in the last episode though not optimistic. I find the multiple unreliable narrators approach frustrating. The later adoptive family seem to get off lightly so far considering the mum blatantly took the food allowance.

narcASD · 24/04/2025 23:04

Oh I loved this series but was so confused it ended abruptly, I didn’t realise there was another 2, where can I watch them?
the episode from Natalia’s pov really made me change my mind, it was really sad.
off to google now!

MrsPeterHarris · 24/04/2025 23:10

@narcASDthey’re still on Disney - episode 7 was released yesterday & final episode next Wednesday.

@Tourist29 I agree about all the unreliable narrators & also found her new family strange. I couldn’t work out if they just wanted her money or genuinely cared but feel I’m erring on the side of genuinely caring & simply being very good people (we’re just not used to that these days!)

TheaBrandt1 · 24/04/2025 23:13

The parents are weirder than the kid!

MrsPeterHarris · 24/04/2025 23:16

Totally @TheaBrandt1& what about the Barnett’s own 3 boys?! Are they ok?
