I think I could have a go at a thoracotomy. Anyone else watched too much Greys Anatomy?!🤣

Is it just me?

I’ve often diagnosed medical conditions on Call The Midwife before the midwives do. To be fair, CTM isn’t exactly subtle - some of the patients might as well wear the name of their condition on flashing neon badges.

Have just looked that story up @babasaclover , sounds mad.

Give it a watch. What is mad that even though she was a fraud her storylines were great!

I remember when I watched a lot of CSI and had got to the point where I knew how long the victim had been dead based on what liver temp was shouted out.

After years of watching Casualty I could definitely sort a pneuomothorax - give me a bic pen! Third intercostal space was it...

The resident is my new guilty pleasure.
Could definitely do a chest tube and I’d say I could remove a bit of skull should the need arise!

I enjoyed that, loads of eye candy!

Never watched Greys but I do work in the operating room and reckon I could perform a good range of surgeries given the chance 😂

Oldglasses · 06/04/2025 10:41

Also love a diagnosis. A few years ago DH had taken a call from his elderly mum who was confused and disorentated and I called out - it's a UTI, take her to the walk-in! And I was right. I would never have known had it not been for my extensive watch of medical dramas over the years (and DH has watched Casualty along with me so he should've also known really).

I always carry a biro for inserting into the third intacostal

There was a GP in Australia who made burr holes in skull for a subdural haematoma with a black and decker drill..dr of the year.
You don’t want to do a whipped … it’s horrific , even for the very experienced of surgeons.

LunaTheCat · 06/04/2025 10:56

I used to watch “Trapper John MD” and “St Elsewhere” in the 80’s as a med student … our 3rd year clinical biochemistry exam had a question about Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia … of all the students , I was the only one who knew what it was… many thanks to Trapper John 😅😅

Tillow4ever · 06/04/2025 10:58

I’ve found my people! I’ve watched Grey’s so many times now I’m practically a surgeon. Just need to remember NOT to stand up if they ever shout “is anyone here a doctor”…. At least not unless an actual doctor doesn’t stand up!

In a reply to a PP - you were thinking of The Good Doctor

Please tell me you watched the documentary on the greys anatomy writer that faked cancer etc and wrote all the scripts based on her ‘lived experience’

What is this documentary called?

MirrorMirror1247 · 06/04/2025 15:17

I used to work in operating theatres. I've been told by a surgeon that taking out an appendix is easy, but from what I've seen I'd have trouble finding it in the first place! I'd definitely have a go at an abscess though.

Exploratory laparotomy is maybe an American term, in my hospital it was a diagnostic laparoscopy, where you make small incisions and use the camera to look around the abdomen. It would sometimes convert to a laparotomy, though.

Most of what's on Grey's, ER etc seems to be general surgery, but they never seem to cover the emergency urology or plastics cases!

NotsosunnyShropshire · 06/04/2025 15:24

You guys need to watch The Pitt.

it’s like Dr Carter from ER grew up. Except it’s not Dr Carter.

growinguptobreakingdown · 06/04/2025 15:48

I watched so much Buffy in my 20s/30s I honestly thought I could king fu kick any would be muggers even though I'd never practiced any martial arts

spiderlight · 06/04/2025 17:04

Is The Pitt available in the UK, @NotsosunnyShropshire? I really want to watch it but I couldn't find it the last time I looked.

@growinguptobreakingdown i used to take a shortcut through a church cemetery on the way home from work at the same age - I was pretty sure I could dust anything that came at me.

I don’t think we have The Pitt yet.
For a slightly different take on the hospital drama I loved The Knick. Not perfect but definitely worth a watch.

Have you watched the documentary about the writer called Anatomy of a Liar? It's fantastic and quite eye opening.

JenniferAnistonForReals · 06/04/2025 19:46

Ever since Clive on Neighbours turned out to be a doctor and did an emergency tracheotomy (on Lucy…?) I’ve always made sure to carry a biro at all times.

Partly cos Meredith Grey, Miranda Bailey and Richard Webber are all general surgeons. There was some plastics when Mark and Jackson were around.
