Just binged it. It captures the late 80s sooo well.

I watched this last week when I was off sick. The Deacon Blue soundtrack made me very nostalgic.

Thanks for this thread - I watched this as a fifteen year old, really enjoyed seeing it again - so well acted and not a moment wasted.

The class issues went over my head when i was 15 The snobbery from those who worked with Martin was awful

I winced when Tom and Kathy were in the restaurant and Kathy told him she had stopped sleeping with Martin. Tom said "what about his rights" This drama was originally broadcast two years before it became illegal for a man to rape his wife. that law came in in 1991

I watched it with my parents - I was about 13/14! Different world. What is weird is that watching it again I realise how clearly I remember some of the scenes. It is uncomfortable but very well done. Interesting watching it as an adult and picking up some of the Thatcherite angle and also the innate sexism. Also how when I first starting working Christmas parties were like that - very different now!

Haven’t read whole thread…is this available on bbc iplayer? And if so, does it stay there forever?

CherryogDog · 09/04/2025 09:10

Sorry for going off on a tangent, but I'm trying to remember the names of a couple of Trevor Eve dramas back in (I think) the 70s/80s.
One was where he had an affair with the young daughter (possibly underage), and the other he was obsessed with his own daughter.
I've Googled but nothing is ringing a bell.

PaulaPennyfeather · 09/04/2025 09:14

Are you thinking of A Bouquet of Barbed Wire?

CherryogDog · 09/04/2025 09:26

That's it! Thanks @PaulaPennyfeather
I've just remembered the other one is A Sense of Guilt.

Bouquet of Barbed wire (the original) is one of my favourite series of all time. The Trevor Eve version is not the original and imho rubbish.

Agreed! I’d LOVE to watch the original 1976 version with Susan Penhaligon and Frank Finlay - my mother was absolutely gripped by it, but I was strictly forbidden from watching it, being only ten. The Trevor Eve version was a damp squib, I thought.

I was 17 and absolutely transfixed. I bought the DVDs on Amazon a few years ago and get them out now and then to watch although I think my DVD player will give up the ghost soon. It includes Another Bouquet which was OK but not a patch on the first series.

I started watching the first episode but am struggling to get into it. None of the characters are appealing to me, apart from perhaps Tom's wife.

Kathy and her husband have just had a bad dinner date. Does it get better soon?

ageingdisgracefully · 09/04/2025 15:56

@PaulaPennyfeather: have you tried Dailymotion? Smile

PaulaPennyfeather · 09/04/2025 16:41

@ageingdisgracefully- no, but maybe I shall! Thanks. Quite fancy being scandalized.

I thought it was great

Alright, it’s growing on me. The car scene was quite, er, unglamorous with the sweaty and dishevelled aftermath and it all taking place next to a couple of old skips!

It also illustrated the difference between men and women rather nicely, as per a recent Mumsnet thread:

Kathy: ‘I like being around you but can’t describe it.’
Tom: ‘I want to touch you all the time.’

Okay then!

His sudden repulsion for his poor wife is acutely and painfully observed.

CherryogDog · 14/04/2025 09:25

I didn't watch it first time round. I enjoyed it.
Not a popular stance but I felt sorry for Kathy at the end. Also the hate and blame that was directed at her, the dirt throwing scene in the car park was horrible.
I felt for Liz too, sad that she wanted to stay with Tom but thought she was very dignified in the car scene.
The similarity between Kathy and Tom's daughter was verging on creepy.
Tom's breakdown surprised me, I think he really did love Kathy.
I'd love to see a ten years later episode!

BadSkiingMum · 14/04/2025 11:59

The production values are intriguing me too. Quite a lot of silence and scenes without dialogue or background music.

It does capture the eighties zeitgeist pretty well, with the new ideas, technologies and values coming up against a traditional world that had stayed fairly intact since the post-war period.

And the sexism, oh the sexism!

I will watch episode 3 later.

Thanks for coming back to the thread @CherryogDog I need to compare notes with someone!

BadSkiingMum · 14/04/2025 12:10

Also to add, Reece Dinsdale does a good job of giving some nuance to a fairly horrible character. He conveys immaturity through his physical stance and we can see him struggling to handle his colleagues, his wife and the corporate culture at Infocorp - he is clearly happiest behind his computer trying to fix a knotty problem, as we see him in Episode 1.

But Annette Crosby as Liz is the standout player.
