Anyone watching Toxic Town on Netflix? I just watched the whole thing and so angry for those affected.

OP posts:
Lonerangerr · 28/02/2025 00:13

I watched this today! When Netflix first announced it, I tried to do research online and was gobsmacked by the almost nothing that is out there

It's sickening, them poor women and their babies😢

JennyTals · 28/02/2025 01:50

So sad, esp shelby, rip little one

BobnLen · 28/02/2025 06:14

I live in Northants and remember it being in our local paper, it was before much internet use so people didn't know so much what was going on outside their County, I'm going to watch it at the weekend

sierramiller · 28/02/2025 11:54

Why are there so many Scottish characters?

This is Corby Northants?

Is it coincidence?

I watched a documentary with the real ladies and Susan has a very mild, almost undetectable Scottish accent and (according to the script) she went to school in corby

Anyway, just something that's thrown me

It's because it's set in Corby. Most people in Corby are Scottish.

Most people in Corby, Northamptonshire are not Scottish.
Many Scottish people did move there to work at the Steelworks.

@Namechanged43

Right! Makes sense

Thanks

I've just watched the whole thing. I'd only planned to watch the first episode tonight but found it too gripping to switch off. It's a good series and very well acted by a strong cast.
I'm horrified that I had never heard of this before even though the court case is relatively recent. The information at the end of the last episode about toxic waste in landfill sites elsewhere is very concerning and makes you wonder how many other families have been similarly effected and still could be.
Definitely worth a watch in my opinion.

Youvebeenmuffled · 01/03/2025 00:01

I think this was one of the best shows Netflix has made. I hope all those affected went on to live comfortable lives.

RIP Shelby

Onacuctustree · 01/03/2025 12:56

I was thinking one episode.. and to bed...

And that it was only the woman that had their fertility questioned.

Onacuctustree · 01/03/2025 12:59

I loved it.

I used to know someone whose baby was affected in the USA I think due to the water. Like an Erin Brokovich type event 😫 it must happen more often than we know.

Rowgtfc72 · 01/03/2025 13:07

Just watched. How sad when the judge told Shelbys mum she didn't count.
Watched the actual mums on the news. They came across very well.

Snugglemonkey · 02/03/2025 12:48

I was surprised I had not heard of this before too. And yes, the information at the end was really worrying!

nahthatsnotforme · 02/03/2025 12:50

I've watched the first 3 episodes. It's ok but goodness me it's drawn out.

They could have told this story in 2 hours, not 4.

Dearg · 02/03/2025 12:52

Toxic Town on BBC iPlayer is a documentary on the same event, interviewing the people involved. It’s very interesting viewing ( and only 1 episode)

TammyJones · 02/03/2025 17:01

Absolutely brilliant.

It's a Corby accent.
My cousins have never been to Scotland; born and raised in Corby by English parents but they all speak that way.
I was born in Corby, but grew up 8 miles away, so I don't have the accent.

SteelyNan · 02/03/2025 18:09

I lived in Corby for a few years in the 90s/2000s, DH was brought up there.

The birth defects were known about even then, I remember it in the paper when we lived there. A relative has a now adult child with severe disabilities which, we'll never know whether they were caused by pollution or not.

After MaggieT and her mates closed 90% of the works, a lot of the former workers and their families went back to Scotland* but many more stayed and were essentially abandoned by successive governments. I worked for the LA and the only time you saw a politician was around election time to have their photo taken against the backdrop of a derelict building on the Lincoln estate, then they fucked off until next election.

It's an absolute fucking scandal.

*Scots were the single largest demographic but many Welsh, Irish, Eastern Europeans (post-war) also moved there.

And yes, Corby has it's own distinctive accent. It doesn't actually sound Scottish to me as I'm a "real" Scot but apparently it sounds Scottish to other English people even though Corby Millennials will be at least 3rd Generation "immigrants".

Changingplace · 02/03/2025 18:21

I grew up in the next town to Corby and I’ve weirdly never heard anything about this until hearing about this drama, I don’t think it’s very common knowledge at all.

BobnLen · 02/03/2025 18:28

Finished it now, I thought it was really good and do remember it quite well but DS is in the same age group as the affected children so I probably took more notice of it when it was in the local paper, I live in the same county. I also remember all the stuff about Wonderworld which was mentioned in the series

SteelyNan · 02/03/2025 18:37

@BobnLen

I haven't watched the programme yet but I remember the jokes about "Wonderworld...wonder when"? I think there was still a faded sign when I first moved to Corby, somewhere near the Golf Course?

SteelyNan · 02/03/2025 20:45

just watched first episode. I have a few minor niggles. The Corby Borough Council logo is not what was used at the time.

In 1995, when this is mostly set, you no longer had the pink dust coating everything, that stopped after Thatcher effectively closed the works so you wouldn't have been wiping pink shit off your windows (and I wasn't).

Toxic town
UrsulasHerbBag · 03/03/2025 10:42

I’m so glad there is a thread here echoing my first reaction (only watched first episode this morning and I know I will finish it today, gripped), how did I not know? I don’t remember this at all? This is heartbreaking and so distressing. Those little children disabled and little Shelby! What a scandal. Thank you @SteelyNan for your post, agree with your comments. It’s a fucking Sandal.
